CBS News reports that the unemployment rate among African-Americans in the United States is now at 16.2 percent, according to the most recent data compiled by the US Department of Labor. The unemployment rate for black males is 17.5 percent; for black teenagers, it's an astonishing 41 percent.

34 percent of New York's young black men age 19 to 24 are not working."

Things are unlikely to change any time soon.

the new forecasts say the US economy will grow by less than 3 percent for the next two years.

why not compare white and Hispanic unemployment numbers with African Americans we are all US citizens and I don't think anyone race is being affected more than others.
what I see them doing here is creating more of a divide between the US people by saying its worse for one group of people than another...

one fact we can finally get from this article is our economists are admitting this is looking more and more like a depression but much worse as there are no recovery plans in place by our leaders it seems they are only making things worse with more debt that they don't have to pay.

What this means is we can all expect a lot more wildings, especially Twitter fed mob robs and the like spreading to cities across the country as bored, hot, not working, hungry and generally angry black kids go on the rampage like many seem to be doing in an organized fashion in Chicago.

Agreed. I know MANY middle class to lower middle class white people without jobs. And I know a lot of hispanic and black people without jobs. I think unemployment rates for african americans have always been a little higher. But articles like these do really just create divides and start race related social issues.

The truth is, the only way for us poor people to make a living is to either take jobs where our income is unreported, or hustle. I tried for a year and a half to get a job. I applied at every single place that you can think of, from Mcdonalds to street campaign type jobs. I finally just moved to a whole different state just for 3 weeks of solid work. Hard times here. TIme to get rid of money.

Poverty is a sapiens sapiens issue. Its sad how races are turned against 1 another to oppress. Hopefully in time there will be a better way to survive or exist...

I'm pretty sure a lot of other species just kill off the ones they don't like, as opposed to putting them out of work. So we can't be all that bad off...

So how does that 34% live if they don't work? Mom and pop can't do everything! Maybe they are into illegal occupations and thus don't file W-2 employment papers, pay no taxes, no unemployment, no disability, social security, etc

Not that its really worth paying into state programs as most of the money is wasted left and right!

it is about race and not in the way you would think

i am talking about illegal immigrants displacing every other minorty including black and white.

the reason they didnt include a comparsion of all minorites is my guess they dont want the truth known.

the hispanic population is already and soon to be a majority in this country.

there is over 30 million illegals in this country and that is putting everyone out of work.

The reason is when you see unemployment figures people assume it's inclusive of all citizens but it's not. Blacks have always been counted separately when it came to unemployment long before our current situation with illegals..

I didnt say any were that bad off I was stressing that its a sapiens sapiens issue of WORKING TOGETHER AS FAMILY TO OVERCOME PETTY FINANCIAL ISSUES MY FRIEND.. tis all And yes many other species practice elimination of weak but with sapiens sapiens you can be physically strong and mentally weak so weakness varies. Maybe we should all move to china and make some yuan. I heard everyone is becoming rich there since the bankers and multinationals are LOOTING america and europe down to the last penny. If we can't force them to keep jobs here by putting the appropriate pressure on our politicians, then at least we can pretend we are chineese and have some cantoneese lobster which I hear is delicious.

Middle class white kids can't get jobs. No way the average poor black male teen ager is going to be given a chance. Face it. Like it or not, a young black man is still scary to many people, whether justified or not. Our society teaches us that if two young men are available for work you need done, if all else is equal the white kids gets the job because he will seem less scary. Speaking the truth is not racist and I am not rendering judgment on the poor black kid; he must and will do what he needs at this point to survive. The hard fact is that many of us white folks won't be far behind. Our money is running out too and there are no jobs.

Unless you wish to explore underlying cultural issues that potentially impact employment, I don't see why these statistics are in the least bit relevant.

What are the Asian unemployment rates? That is just as relevant as the rates for African Americans, yet the report only mentions African Americans, Whites and Hispanics. Why?

What are the unemployment rates for new legal immigrants? That seems to me to be an extremely relevant measure since many of these folks are entering the US with English not being their first language.

In any event, unemployment statistics are notorously flawed and under stated. Most economists suggest that the rates are consistently double what is reported and of course they don't account of other serious issues with respect to employment, those being under employment, part time employment when someone previously had a full time gig and those who, while still employed are commission only folks who's income has been absolutely hammered.

For example, given two methodologies to calculate unemployment is there any doubt that the administration would use the one that produces lower figures and the republicans the higher one? Both are more interested in the numbers than the honesty of them.

The employment picture in the US is terrible. Getting a firm and accurate grasp on the statistics so that the extent of the problem can be understood is far more important than a racial breakdown of an already flawed methodology.

So again we should give someone special treatment................where is Obama, he was gonna be their savior? Just another stupid article trying to further divide the nation.

Special treatment to have unemployment higher than any other group? There have always been a big divide in this country, it didn't just occur.

I agree 100% with you but saying the truth can hurt people that are accustomed to "political correctness".

Lets break it down. Europeans brought negros from africa in chains to the USofA to work as slaves mostly in the south, lincoln gave them freedom and later on was killed, african americans are no longer slaves but are still third class citizens...even lower than southern europeans and asians.

We conquered the natives as well and then gave them reservation land mostly in the west. It seems europeans have a habit of going to war, exploitation and colonialism. Thats life, what can we do? God bless or god damm?

It's up to them to fix it, who's them? I'm not understanding how being unemployed garners special treatment? The folks I know who is unemployed is catching hell, them being black haven't lent them any special treatment from the system. Giving numbers of unemployed black people is hardly being divisive, they've always gave the unemployed numbers that didn't include blacks people just assume that it did.

This is just what a segment of the political elite want . . . the destruction of black people.

One reason for the cutting federal jobs is because there are a vast amount of black people in them. Therefore black people suffer the most when it comes to this present attack on public service jobs.

One reason for the drug war was that they only concentrate on policing drugs in the black community therefore most people in jail for drugs are black people.

This is not racial division this is truth!
