Over the course of the last few weeks, my brother an I have been discussing the present state of affairs on planet Earth. Needless to say, the situation becomes a little more concerning everyday. We have been prepared for some time if the need ever arises to fend for ourselves and defend ourselves. While we have thought about our own families and each other's, we have many people around us that we cannot convince to take the steps needed to be prepared.....just in case.

This poses a huge dillema in a survival situation. Do you help people if they come asking, even though they failed to take action beforehand, or do you turn them away to ensure you have enough supplies for your own family? Well we have decided to take one extra step to help people in just this scenario. We have made a few extra small boxes filled with some basic nessesaties that we can easily hand out to people we wish to help, without dipping into our personal stash or letting them into our homes. It's not much, but it helps us prevent from having to turn away people in need and I feel it's the moral thing to do.

Then I had the realization that if everyone I knew, that was smart enough to prepare for hard times, took the time to prepare just a small box of essentials for others it could save many lives. Then I also realized that I don't know many personaly in "real life" that even think about this sort of topic, let alone prepare for it. So the only people I know that would understand this is you, ATS.

I tried to throw out little tid-bits of information to some friends for a couple years only to be ridiculed. I'm talking facts... no theories. Just to try and get them to pay attention to the countries current state of affairs.
They laughed in my face... and I will do the same if the shtf and they show up at my door!

I can understand that.

Would you be willing to participate in something as I described with like-minded ATS'ers?

I would be interested in doing something like that.

Although I must admit, in the back of my mind, I would be thinking, "They were on ATS, I would think they would be better prepared."
I guess it would depend on the situation though, you can prepare all day, but if your house burns down...

I have had this too, working within an Ambulance service as well. Will see when the time comes how much notice they took.

Like the idea of a network of some sort

Ya, you never know what could happen. We could provide a small redundancy program for others, and be on the lookout for ourselves if we are in trouble.

If (big if) there is a SHTF scenario, some friends and I found a way to communicate if there was still interweb.

We "share" an email account and pass messages written as a draft (saved), then others can log on without any issues of downloading messages. None of us are real computer guys so I don't know if it matters much at all, but we are trying to be prepared and are networking.

I think you have a great idea here but I'm a pretty private person.
If anything does go down though, I'll be more than willing to help people that need it. Just not the ones I mentioned in the last post, lol.

Good idea, but I doubt the web will be running if the SHTF...in my opinion.

The last people I would align myself with are paranoid atsers.

I planned years ago so i don't have to worry about those that are worrying about it now.
Planning prevents poor performance.

Sure. I'm all for helping people who are in the "know". At least you can expect them to act accordingly.

I posted the BOB list here: Commonality for Survival
However, a small "handout" box would be ideal for those who either didn't, or couldn't prepare.

Lets start out with a basic.
First Aid Box A small cheap one
P38
A little Salt and / or Spice (Mrs Dash Table Blend is a good thing)
small cheap folding knife
fishing line and hooks
A few large trash bags (for rain ponchos, rain catching, tarp, etc)
50 ft string for just about anything you can think of to use a rope for.

I'm sure there are more things to add.

You honestly think that if the world get's that bad and people are desperate for food and find out you have supplies that they will be content with a little box of goodies from you?

This is the main problem with survivalists. They think that stocking up on items and some tools will allow them to ride out the storm when in actuallity having those things will make you a target. You will be chased and hunted and killed for what you have and sure you may be able to fight off the mobs for a bit but you will lose in the end.

Your only hope for survival is to form a large group that will stand a chance of fighting off the roaming militaristic gangs that will shortly form up after this event happens and relying on your little stash for you and your family will lead to your demise.

I truly admire your compassion but if a real shtf event occurs; avoid anyone you do not know. Even some people you think you can trust now, will become predators in a shtf event.

I prefer to go it alone or with one other person and get as far away from other people as possible. I don't even trust most of my family.

No...this is real life and not a game or tv show or movie or the internet.
Nobody knows what it will be like so they can't tell you what the future brings....its just an opinion.

I see many here visualizing a "Mad Max" scenario. But helping each other, maintaining civility, dignity, compassion, honor could help forstall the total collapse.

I guess my glass is half full tonight. And any SHTF scenario won't include the total implosion of civilization.

I believe in the human spirit and that civilization will not be over.
We can still be compassionette towards others...the rules will just change a bit.
