You can fine tune the rules all you want, but when someone tells me they're gonna 'get fracking' on your property, it's still going to boil down to what they intended to say with that.

Is it about gas or is it about precious bodily essense?

There is another example, I have no idea what you mean by “fracking”

that could be a insult or a complement for all I know

Calling non-members idiots is fine, but calling members idiots is perceived as a general personal attack and falls under a seperate T&C.

I thought we were talking about profanities and censor circumvention?

Fracking is a method for pumping liquids into the ground under great pressure in order to fracture rock and release natural gas.

No, we don't need any clearer guidelines. A list of words will only enforce the letter of the law, which often diminishes the spirit of the law. Ie., "Well, this one isn't on the list," etc...

It's like pornography, I can't define it, but I know it when I see it. And so do you and everyone else. A better question might be why the properties of certain plants are banned from discussion. Now that, that makes no sense at all.

Can you please just tell me why ATS would be opposed to the idea, it would not remove moderators discretion just make things clearer for members on what they can and cannot say.

Geez... I hope we can keep the topic to one thing without going all 'scattergun'

Is this thread about profanities, personal attacks or illegal substances?

I'm getting confused.

I guess y'all forgot this little gem in the Terms and conditions:
15b.) Profanity: You will not use profanity in our forums on the Websites, and will neither Post with language or content that is obscene, sexually oriented, or sexually suggestive nor link to sites that contain such content. You will also not use common alternative spellings or net-speak alternative for profane words.
Didn't you agree to this when you joined ATS?
If the rule isn't to your liking, start your own website without the rule. Easy to do... really.

Seeing as how your post is addressed to ALL members I must say I find it rather offensive..

Was it your intent to offend ALL members??

Oh good lord, if you take that as off-topic, you really have a rigid definition of topicality. (The preceding sentence began with a mild expletive, expressed my annoyance at your rigidity and self-righteousness, however did not break the T &C with regards to cursing. It represents one example of what you CAN say!)

Thanks!

This thread is about the establishment of a clear statement as to what constitutes bad language being issued by ATS moderators based on user feedback to reduce confusion amongst members.

Yes but intent is so subjective as well I was once banned for calling members idiots who were clearly being idiotic.

But you attacked the poster...not the post! And if they are that idiotic, then just don't reply and move on. There are many posters here who say things simply to get a rise out of others...don't rise to it!

Never argue with an idiot...they will beat you with experience, and you come out looking just as bad if not worse than them!

Maybe it's just me but speaking of ignorance and denying it, I see this kind of attitude just as offensive as someone cursing at me...I could care less about someones language because I am not overly sensitive and I can handle it like a big boy!

I agree that personal attacks, with or without profanity, should not be allowed...but I happen to agree that the rules are clearly defined but not clearly enforced. Picking and choosing what is allowed and what is not allowed is clearly discretion that does not fit into the very clear T & C 's.

Depending on intent, I may or may not be able to use profanity (or an acronym to suggest profanity)...do I understand that right? No, I am sure that is wrong!

If I don't like the T & C 's then I can take my ball and go home...really? I have no problem with the T & C 's (and no I have not forgotten them)...the problem seems to be the way the are or are not enforced.

I think providing definitive clarity here is important, and I have yet to see that...discretion and intent can be construed many ways.

My intent was to address the censor circumvention used by members on page one of this thread.

If I've offended you, please accept my most heartfelt apology.

Is on topic to a discussion about profanity?

OK

Sorry I have a big problem with the “if you don’t like the thread get out” mantra, if I think a thread is idiotic I should be allowed to explain why.

dont wanna get picky but the quoted t&c

15b.) You will also not use common alternative spellings or net-speak alternative for profane words.

if that is the case than half the threads ont he board are included into breaking this one
as i have seen a few with

obscene, sexually oriented, or sexually suggestive

but i do agree, moderator discretion is advised. i do believe in some situations a cuss word is well warranted when all others words fail to describe something.
i wouldn't tho want ats to descend into a profanity black hole like some sites tho

please expound more.

cussing and cursing are two very different things,

cussing is using vulger language
cursing is damning someone/something...or else causing physical discomfort or pain or malady in this immediate time frame by way of 'wishing' or actual 'psychic' powers.... i.e. dark magic...

Right... and I stated that language you wouldn't use in situations like weddings, funerals, public schools or at your local church (if you were religious) or the town council meetings (if you're not), then you shouldn't use it here.

It is, after all, a public arena, is it not?

By all means explain why you think the content is idiotic...just don't call the posters of the contents idiots
