I would say after studying human biology..

I'm more amazed at life, than any of these religious people ever could be..

Although i have a lot of respect for Mr. Hawking, you must ask yourself what were you expect from a man who has spent his entire life in a wheelchair, who probably never felt the love ...

Steve H. is a dreamer...all through history there has been dreamers. We have all heard that "dreamers put man on the moon". The country I live in (U.S.A) is supposed to be founded on freedoms; thought, and religious to name two. I believe he can think any thing he wants to and nobody has to listen or believe in it. He is famous/infamous which means he is free to be attacked, as in the stars in sports, movies...yata, yata, yata! I will watch this topic unfold here and in the news, to see what religion will do... Dreamers have always worried and frightened the religions of the world i.e. all the famous thinkers and creators. I don't side either way but I believe in the separation of church and state. That line has been crossed alot.

Looks like people feel threatened.

If you know basic chemistry, basic biology, basic physics and basic neurology, you'll see that all of our actions, thoughts and perceptions are influenced primarily by electrical signals in our brain, of which external/internal factors such as genetics, environment, and experiences are a catalyst for. There is no "magical" free will, and IF let's say there is "magical"free-will, it would be so weak in effect that in comparison to all the other "driving forces" behind our actions, it could be considered insignificant.

magical free will? you seem so wrong. we have free will, i can do anything i choose and i can take ideas of others and act on them. take a man on hunger strike he is defiying he's "driveing force" for political reasons. i think thats freewill its against his wellbeing its a horrible experience his "driveing forces" would be screaming to eat and yet he does not

If I had to spend most of my life a shriveled husk drooling in a wheelchair with a computer doing my talking, I'd have a pretty bummer outlook on life too.

It is alright Mr. Hawking. Never mind the haters. You have made the whole world think about ourselves differently. I appreciate your contribution to humanity.

I am a supporter of a great mind. He is looking for logical answers for the meaning of life and the answers we all want.

Stephen Hawking's machine has been broken for many years. This person's broken machine makes him incapable of feeling the connectedness, or the oneness.

Just because the calculation potions of his mind of extremely advanced means nothing when determining what it is to be human when the part of the body (his Kundalini) that receives the oneness/spirit is not functioning properly.

When the antenna of a radio receiver is broken the receiver will fail to receive a signal..

Myself I fully understand the mundane workings of the physical machine.

I am also a studied mystic/shaman and I have personally seen and experienced many things unexplainable in the human language and physical thought.

Hawking: bad info in bad info out.

He hasn't spent his entire life in a wheelchair. He contracted a form of ALS at the age of 21 which has progressed at a very slow pace. In fact, he was quite active before the illness. He was even a coxswain for Oxford's rowing team. He also has stated that he feels very blessed with his life having been able to contribute so much to science and having a beautiful family despite his disease.

No, just...no..

You really think i can read it seriously ?

You, my friend, just won a major facepalm

Seriously, were talkin about science and what you guys talk about.......SHAMANS ?!

Im probably not smart enough to understand what Hawkin say but at least im not trying to explain it with mystic/shamanistic BS

I've been denounced before.. rub dirt on it.

Sounds uber dramatic and serious though.. he was "DEEE!!NOUNCEEEED!!.. BOOWAHAHA!".. After a proper denouncing, are extra humiliation points awarded for saying "take that!!" or mentioning sloppy potty?

I denounce the denouncer who cannot denounce me.. because I'm rubber and he's glue.

To quote Jason Becker, another sufferer of ALS, ""I have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. It has crippled my body and speech, but not my mind." When people with this disease are capable of producing music like this, I'd say any problems they have are superficial. They are just as aware and connected as the rest of us, if not more so.

I bet Hawking's quaking in his wheelchair.

Some internet non-entity using Hawking as a figurehead to beat science with is nothing new.

That's why he calls for people to denounce the core philosophy of "mindlessness" from which much of modern science springs and, instead, embrace a more advanced understanding of our universe that makes consciousness the focal point of our existence.

"If modern science believes that human beings are mere biological robots with no consciousness, then we must really question why we are listening to these scientists at all," explains Adams, who believes that humans are a combination of mind, body and spirit that exists far beyond the current understanding of the physical sciences.

Mindless New Age garbage. What does the first sentence actually set out to say? The second paragraph is more sweeping generalisations with no real meaning.

He reads like the type of dreamer who'd offer hugs and positive thinking to combat disease and wars...

Common cold = 1 hug
Measles = 3 hugs and positive thinking
War = hold hands and sing peace songs...whilst hugging lol!

He's another hypocritical idiot using the inventions of science (internet, laptop, mass-produced chair, room, windows, clothes etc) to complain about science.

Using fallacies is not the way to support one perspective over the other. Adams is nothing like a hug therapist you just made up, I can tell by reading what the guy wrote. Not to mention there are many documented studies (some more credible than others) on the healing power of love, so maybe you are just in need of a hug.

Is it hypocritical for a car owner to complain about their car or traffic congestion? Hyprocrisy is doing one thing and expecting others to so something else. You have critically missed the deeper inter-relational connection about what was said and prefer to think that the machine is all there is.

Also, you probably shouldn't call college graduates with science degrees idiots, it just doesn't make you look very smart. This scientist is trying to say that to ignore free will and spirituality in exchange for cold precision science is a mistake. Science can explain the soul. People just don't want to listen.

Using a simple computer based model, the relationship to the soul, body, and mind are easy to understand without all the mystical mumbo jumbo religion mashes into it. How could science explain the afterlife? Get better technologies that can detect energy. Where does the mind go? Scan it, then follow the energy from there. Science can explain life, death, the afterlife, and even ghosts, faeries, monsters and anything else that could exist.

If you think having a soul is idiotic, you could always give it to me....But I digress.

You won't learn from this, listen to the machine man preach his values of the machine and how we are drones. Science doesn't support the man-machine philosophy, individuals do and so do you.

i heavily disagree with you as religion states that any being who considers himself as divine as god will go to hell, this is also one of the reasons lucifer was cast out of heaven, because he thought he could be as powerful as god.

Learn your facts before you go religion bashing!

Also your science says that their are multi-dimensions - Correct or incorrect? ------ Correct, so how does mr stephan hawkins know that one of those dimensions is not where God resides and the stories of the holy books occurred in other dimensions and we have been so disconnected from nature that we fail to see it and...... how do you know for that matter?

Lol. First of all what religion, it would have to be one of the minority religions like Christianity that actually believes in a hell. Also believing that you are divine, which by bible logic we are, is different from believing we are as powerful as god. Religion is faith not facts. I suggest you need to learn your religion before you go theory bashing because the god described in your religion is everything, including all the dimensions in which you propose that he dwells. Finally I'd just like to point out that moving god and the origin of the holly books to another dimension just transposes the same questions to another timeline or universe, so your argument is circular.

Laughed out loud for real when I read your post. My sincere thanks.

human beings are merely "biological machines" with no consciousness, no souls, no spirit, no mind and nothing but a collection of organized chemicals that run physical brains in a deterministic machine-like way.

I think Mr. Hawking is just ranting because hes been stuck to a wheelchair all his life and his very life is powered by a machine.

Stephen Hawkings attitudes could simply be a manifestation of his disease.

The brain does not know what it does not know.

I know a women who as a young student had a stroke...
...and as a result did not recognise her own right arm...
...the place in her brain that represented and conrolled it was damaged...
...and for her it did not exist and treated it as if it belonged to someone else.

It does not surprise me that Stephen though brilliant...
...may be missing the capacity to fully know his humanity...
...and so reflect this in his philosophical view of man.

That's his belief, but not mine. He is a mathematician , not an all knowing intelligence.

That is just his short sighted, closed minded opinion, nothing more.

Negative, two identical people will not behave identically because their environment and experiences will differ either only just so slightly or incredibly.

You refer to quantum mechanics, could you please elaborate on which points of quantum mechanics you feel support the notion of free-will? I would also like it if you provided your own definition for what you believe free-will is.

When I have said "magical free will" I was referring to the notion that there is some god-given immaterial driving force behind each individual lump of cells that is the "real you" capable of independent decision making and experiences while disregarding physical properties. This is not the case.

Regardless, if you feel that there is magical free will arising out of probability factors from quantum switches, then that is also illogical. If I make a random number generator on my computer that has specific actions tied to specific numbers, does that the mean the RNG is exercising free-will?

Sometimes I wonder if exists soulless human beings. I think I finally found one. Mr. Stephen Hawking is mere a robot. This robot have a very sophisticate brain-computer to make rational and scientific thoughts. But it lacks wisdom and philosofical reason. Can someone upload some Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Kant and others wisdom masters to Hawking's hard-disk?

Thank you
