Damn kids!
Anyways, glad to hear you are still weathering the storm.
I know the feeling of going through one.
It can drive you crazy at moments.
Distractions are best,we used to play cards and listen to music, try to stay away from the tv,with the occasional checking the weather channel and local news for updates.
If the power went out,we broke out the candles and battery powered radio ,check out side if we could, and continued the card game.
There are times it sounds like your house is going to come down, but it didn't.
Stay in a safe place in your house and please don't go outside.

Is it me or THEY ARE NOT EVACUATING Rikers Island Prison? What happens if it's flooded? Trouble... that's what.

And if it's bad enough, wouldn't surprise me if some of these prisoners sue the state and win and are released...

I just wanted to share this live stream in Manhattan, New York City. This guy is a 27 year old singer that life casts from what I've read. He doesn't really talk too much, but that is because nothing is going on right now there. He does speak a little bit every now and then and also participates in the chat room which is decently moderated.

Should be hitting there in a few hours so give it a look around then. It's pretty good quality.

About 15 minutes ago while I was watching that live feed of it, we all seen a bunch of military vehicles driving down the road. If anyone finds any other good quality ones like that one please u2u me. I'll be watching this all night just like I did for 6 1/2 hours straight last night watching that Brian guy.

SURPRISE ! ! ! !

We are still here and as you can see the power is still on. It is cloudy and breezy but the clouds are white not gray.
A quick look around by hubby just now reveals only small branches and leaves and pine needles down in our yard.
I know there are other areas harder hit than right here. There are roads closed and power outages throughout the region.
So what happened to Irene?
The major player in steering the storm was a low pressure trough that sat over the midwest to the Appalachains. It was hoped that it was strong enough to push it out to sea but it was not. Early on I noticed that the lower portion ot the trough was lifting northward. This allowed a bunch of dryer air from the south west to scoot below it and get pulled in by the energy of Irene. Weather systems this size effect large portions of the globe. Anyway that drier air was in the place where Irenes southwestern feeder bands were looking for energy. Instead of finding the warm moist air of the gulf stream it got hot dry air from the southwest. This drier air started to be pulled in just as Irene was making land fall in NC. The center was still west of the coast line at that time and so the storm traveled overland for the entire state of NC, exiting at it most north eastern point. So the combination of that much drier air along with time spent over land has pretty much taken all the power out of Irene.
I do not want to down play the storm. If it still has any of the fire it had while passing here yesterday afternoon and evening then the folks north of me are in for an adventure today.
The news is reporting 10 deaths from NC up through MD. My heart goes out to those families.
Ok, well time to think about going outside to start the clean up. Not so bad. I am not doing it in the dark and our chain saw, a light weight for yard chores only, is electric
Be safe those of you north of me and still in the path of Irene.
Peace and Love
Karen

Hopefully you have heard from your Mother by now. The storm is passed us. It was not too bad. It got about as strong perhaps a bit stronger than Isabel but unless your Mom is in a coastal low lying area I think she is ok. Our strongest gusts right here at the mouth of the bay was only 67 mph. That was a gust. The sustained winds were about 35-45 through out most of the day so it was more like a tropical storm through this area. There is a pocket of folks without power near Richmond, in Chesterfield. Other than that the outages are right along the coast.
Peace and Love
Karen

I'm just outside Atlantic City. Everything is pretty calm now, lost power last night for maybe an hour or two. Was pretty much a non-event for me, I think I slept through the worst of it. Nothing like riding out Wilma in 2005 in a trailer in broward county. Now THAT was a hurricane.

A quick walk around my neighborhood reveals about the same kind of damage that I have in my yard. Lots of leaves and small branches, sticks really. It looks very sloppy every where but I do not see any big branches or trees in the blocks surrounding my house. The side streets on either side of me seem to have lost their power. As I said early on I am on a pretty major road and I connect to an even bigger road so even if the power goes, they bring us up right away. My clocks were all correct when I got up this morning so we didn't loose power at all.
My brother who lives on Long Island lost power at his house about 1:00 this morning.
Now, all eyes on Jose. TD 10 just updated to a tropical storm. Here we go again.

Any posters from the Dover, Delaware area. Haven't heard from my son, and he was keeping my posted by text. I worry about him even more because he just got out of the Hospital with a broken jaw. What a nightmare! Thank you for any replies from that area!
