There is no concern about the state of the magnetosphere. The "leaks" not permanent features and have been known to exist for a long time. They do not represent damage to the magnetosphere but are more like temporary conduits which allow particles of the solar wind to enter the magnetosphere.

The surprising thing about the "leaks" discussed in the article you linked is not that they exist, but that they occurred under conditions under which it was though they would not; a "northward" solar wind (they occur as a matter of course with a "southward" wind). There is no reason to think this is a new phenomenon or represents any damage to the magnetosphere. It is a recent discovery because it is only recently that we have had the instruments to detect it. That it was discovered so soon after those instruments were deployed indicates that it is not an unusual occurrence.

Phage: Thanks for the clarification. Do you know if a very large X-class solar flare could present a higher risk with the current leaks in the magnetosphere? Taking in consideration that it strikes very near where one of those leaks exists. Regards..

No.
Solar flares do not affect weather.

The Mighty Phage has spoken!

I am assuming that you say this because you know first hand?

yep and it's officially been the warmest May on record here in New zealand too. It's winter tomorrow (1st June)

There aren't any current leaks. The "leaks" appear (and disappear) in response to the changes in the solar wind.

Solar flares do not really do much of anything to the magnetosphere, it is CMEs which do. The two are not the same. While large CMEs are often associated with X class flares it is not always the case, nor do large CMEs require an X class flare.

In order for a CME to affect the magnetosphere it must be aimed in our direction when it leaves the Sun. If it is, by the time it reaches Earth it is probably much larger than the magnetosphere. It doesn't strike any particular location of the magnetosphere (on the side facing the sun) any more than a flowing river strikes a particular part of a stone lying in it. It affects the whole thing.

My internet has been horrible lately. My signal has been so bad that I had to take my splitter out of line and run a direct connection to my modem or it wouldnt work. Now it could get slower?!

Also, looks like a good time to test my theory that solar flares drain my cell phone battery, lol. Which I guess COULD be possible if tower signals were weakened.

off topic but this guy might have a simple problem solved if he gets a new splitter. i know my stuff

C and M flares are nothing to worry about.

Yah, what is this doing on top of ATS ...

M class flares are fairly common and only cause problems via static.

NOW if an X or Y class should start heading this way LET ME KNOW

Yayyyyyy!!!!!!!!!

There is no known relationship between individual solar flares and weather. There is, however, evidence for a relationship between the solar activity cycle and global climate. The best known case is the correlation of a long period of solar inactivity called the Maunder Minimum (1645-1715) with the lowest temperatures recorded during the "Little Ice Age" that occurred from 1500 to 1850. Almost no spots were observed on the Sun during this period.

Further, the temperature above the north pole in the stratosphere appears to be correlated with the 11 year sunspot cycle. The stratospheric temperature above the pole is relatively warm or cool when the Sun is active, depending upon which way stratospheric winds are blowing above the equator. There are also other climatic effects that appear to be associated with the sunspot cycle.

However, do note that the physical mechanism responsible for these apparent correlations is not known. Until such a mechanism is found, the existence of a direct relationship between the solar cycle and climate will not be generally accepted.

It is not like I and others have not been speaking for years of where the next end and next beginning would come from in this the 4th Rise and Fall of Civilization but don 't be too quick, this is not the Big One the Elites and Governments of the World have been lying, stealing, murdering and hoping to prepare for with their dreams and schemes, their underground cities and off world bases but this will be a serious hint of what is still to come. It is of course the only world we have but look what most have done with it and if you were God, would you not be ready to wipe it out and start again? And after all, what is closest to eternal, the spirit that all living creatures have and use these vessels will go on, will be reborn again, will continue to accumulate experiences in the material realm until that too is no longer needed and we..all of us, our spirits, which are that spark and part of the Creator it sent out into its creation to experience its creation will next experience the less dense levels of creation. These words of course are lost to most but then, I never spoke needing to be heard, only to know that I spoke the truth as I saw it.

cmon Phage where's the proof that it dont? you are held at much higher standard on here than using 1 liners.
earth directed solar flare do charge the atmosphere electrically and an eletrical charged atmosphere doesnt have any impact on our weather?

amazing, this thread is amazing.

"Post proof they don't affect the weather"

"Ok, here are several different forms of scientific proof"

"Well, your proof doesn't fit my baseless theory, so it's not proof"

"what? I just explained it"

"How much is Nasa paying you?"

"they aren't, here's more proof"

"Those sources might be lying, unless you did these scientific tests yourself, it's all lies"

=====

In all seriousness folks, if you guys are honestly here trying to ignore years of scientific research because it doesn't fit your theory, that has no foundation in facts or reality, then maybe you should wander over to the religion forum.

never argue with an idiot because they will bring you down to their level then beat you with experience

Phage, you might want to consider heading that guys advice, you can't argue science with someone hell bent on ignoring it.

I haven't had 3G signal for about a week and a half now. I wasn't going to blame the sun for it, just t-mobile, but maybe it IS solar activity, which has been rather high the last week or so.

Yes. That's how science works. Given evidence, ideas change.
There is no evidence that a solar flare affects weather, much less have ever barbequed the Earth.

Great answer, thank you for posting this sentence. It sums up a lot very well.

No one else's, just yours...
