'gas' at a filling station is abbreviated slang terminology for Gasoline. 'gas' was introduced into the American vernacular before most of us were born, in advertisements from fuel companies.

we're the rocker arm asembly, assembly, assembly, assembly
we're the rocker arm assembly, and we don't like dirt
to keep our engines running clean
we use Mobil Gasoline
more and more and more and more and more

that is a TV commercial ditty from when I was a boy

Everything in America is a reference to Gas, including funny situations.

Kinda paints a picture of the real "leaders" of the U.S., doesn't it?

Why do Europeans call gas petrol? Maaaaybe because it is short for the word petroleum...gasoline = petroleum...

Why would a European call a male a twat? Clearly males don't have twats....

Each culture influences the things we say and do that other cultures don't understand and poke fun at. So who is to say one is superior over the rest? Does that mean that Christianity is THE religion?

I think you get the picture.

When I hear the word petroleum, I think of petroleum jelly, too. And I'm a brunette. I'm pretty sure I would have known if someone invented a car that ran on petroleum jelly...lol

I think Gasoline was a term coined a long time ago. Gas is short for that. Petrol makes even less sense if you think about it. Petrol is short for petroleum? Which is what - Crude oil? So petrol could be gasoline, fuel oil, kerosene, motor oil, etc. I mean Petroleum is unrefined product right? Gasoline is the term for a group of distillates of Crude oil. It's a made up word for (a then) new product.

Because it sounds better than calling it "Oline"

On the other hand, Petroleum should definitely be called "Leum"
