BUT. Finding someone to take care of you is a horrible way to "plan" for anything. In SHTF scenario, your perfectly good, loving, protective, competent significant other could get killed or even die of natural causes. And then you are on your own. The only realistic plan for anyone to make is to be as prepared as they possibly can be themselves, do everything they can do to increase their own survival skills, and try to ensure that they have good, trustworthy, competent people in their lives, male and female, because human beings do better in groups than alone.

Lots of women whose idea of planning was "finding a man to take care of me" have found out the hard way what a really bad plan that is. Even if the guy is nice and honorable, they can die. Sometimes they arent nice and honorable and they ditch you for a better option. While its nice to have people in your life, its always in your best interests to be prepared to take care of yourself. Not only are you in a better position if you end up all alone for some reason, but you are also a better partner to whomever you happen to be with.

I dont think the US coped very well with the disaster they had a few years back "Hurricane Katrina 2005"

A lot of people were stored or forced to be located at a stadium.

I think FEMA is going to ruin a lot of survival dreams for a lot of people in the United States. And most of the US is going to be in one way or another dependent on FEMA for resources. Maybe by force as well.

wow you want a battle of wits? I don't think your well enough equiped...as far as what I said about you wanting to be a woman...your posts, get your words straight and maybe people won't think the wrong thing...food for thought.

Your thread got me thinking about my own level of SHTF Preparedness.

- I was raised 'in the bush'...at times pretty literally. Taught bushcraft and bushskills from a very young age. Know how to, and have done numerous times, survive in the bush for extended periods of time.
The great thing about my country is we don't really have any dangerous wild animals...pretty much Mankind is top of the foodchain out in the bush in our country.
- I know how to find food, what plants etc can be used for medicinal purposes, how to catch, trap, fish, stalk, hunt, prep, preserve etc etc etc. Know how to build shelters, create fire, cover ones tracks/scent to be less noticable to animals/prey
- The bush and waterways are like home to me.
- I'm also exceptionally handy in a 'handyman' kind of way...can fix most things from home repairs, electronics, automotive/motors, mechanical equipment, have skills in metal fabrication, welding, carpentry, plumbing, building etc etc etc.


...so thats the 'skill' side of it covered okay...what about equipment...

- The bush equipment I have is stuff that has proven its usefulness over the 35 or so years I've been in and out of the bush. Nothing fancy, just what you need to get the job done or to make whatever you need to get the job done. There's bugger all I have bush-equipment-wise...tend to travel light...and pretty much whatever you need already exists out there anyway.
- Weaponary? Well. Yes. Won't get into a list...but theres firepower there if needed. Though again chances are I'd just go with my basic 12-gauge pump-action and one of my decent hunting rifles, knife, machete and thats about it.
All the other more 'hard-out' boom-sticks would just weigh me down, as well as all the ammo, and unless the SHTF event is like some foriegn invasion where I'd be going head-up against heavily armed Soldiers I probably don't need some of the more interesting things stored in the lockers.

...experience?:
- again, have lived for extended periods of time in the bush. Spent a good deal of time during younger years doing such work as Deer culling etc...so living in and off of the bush was pretty second nature.
- have been in some pretty hairy situations in my life too. Not at all a stranger to people who have wished me harm, not a stranger unfortunately to even having my very life threatened and having to act accordingly. Still breathing. I'm not any Military or Ex-Mil type person...just someone who has been brought up in situations, settings and social groups that can be rather 'war like' at times.


So...maybe I'd stand a half-decent chance in a SHTF situation...


There are however some further realities:

- I'm not as fit and as physically resilient as I used to be...and as each year passes I may become less so.
- I'm not as hardout, as 'stone cold aggressive' as I used to be in my younger years either. Age has also mellowed me...I'm more likely to calmly discuss something with someone rather than just up and kick their teeth out these days. I don't know whether I have the stomach and/or desire for fighting like I did when I was younger
- I'm also not single. I'm married and have a young son...so my actions and choices don't fall upon me and me alone. I must make choices conscious of the ramifications they will have upon them also.
- I love my wife and my son beyond anything I could ever describe or ever imagine. They are my life, my soul, my very being.



...so...to that inverse question above: Would being a single Male increase ones chances of survival in any SHTF event?

There is a decent chance that my wife and son could be almost like an 'achilles heel' for me...then again focussing on keeping them safe could also mean I indirectly ensure I keep myself safe in the process.
I do know that my focus won't be on MY survival, but THEIRS.
I can't even begin to fathom a life without them. To never hold them again, never hear their voice, smell my sons hair when he nuzzles into my chest for cuddles...couldn't even think it...


Which then begs the question, what happens if they were removed from the picture...

...would I, with previous skills, experience, equipment etc be some bad-ass Willie-Smith-I-Am-Legend-Survival-God?? Or would I just as easily wet my pants, sit rocking in the corner of my lounge, stick the barrel of one of my guns into my own mouth and pull the trigger??



...as so rightly gets said: You don't know until you know.

Yes preparation and experiences influences outcomes.
So too does luck. So too does fate. So too does all the million other things that inevitably blindside us when those situations happen.


Will I or anyone survive a SHTF event? Ask us the next day, week, month, year, decade...

I am totally not prepared, but I am a female and I am fit. It will be fun to just try to survive with some random guy and have adventure like the movies. I am married, but going through a divorce and my husband is in another country. He would protect me if he was here (I think).. he is the type.. but now I am alone, so let's see what happens

Really, the only reason for having a man around (for me) would be for companionship...and occasionally getting the tight lids off of jars.

ETA I started preparing myself for a SHTF scenario more than 10 years ago, and have spent much time since then learning skills and preparing for the worst...it doesnt come overnight!

I am NOT single, and I find this thread fascinating. If TSHTF, I would want my husband with me as our family would have a better chance of survival (he's a retired Army Ranger). That said, however, how would I fare if something were to happen to him? I have 3 children to care for. This has given me some things to think about.

I wouldn't be helpless. I have weapons and know how to use them. But my skills are certainly not to the level of his.
