Leaked government papers in Copenhagen show officials want to own areas where melting ice is uncovering new shipping routes, fishing grounds and drilling opportunities for oil and gas.
The document said Denmark’s Science Ministry has started collecting data to formally submit a claim for those areas to the U.N. no later than 2014.
Russia, Norway and the U.S. have their own claims - sometimes competing - in a region believed to hold as much as 25 percent of the world’s undiscovered oil and gas.

The Danish government confirmed the authenticity of the called 'Strategy for the Arctic' document, which was first uncovered by Danish Radio and published online by newspaper Information.
...
Foreign Minister Lene Espersen said the strategy is still being reviewed and a final version is expected in June. However, she affirmed in a statement that Denmark expects to 'be able to lay claim on an area which includes the seabed of the North Pole.'

Hmmm interesting. Russia, US amongst others have 'claims' to this land and the resources that lie below. Nether of those two nations is going to let 'little' Denmark follow through on their assertion without a fight.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the North Pole caused WWIII.

Anyway this looks like something to monitor over the next few years.

I like how we're more concerned about the oil in the Arctic then the Arctic disappearing... Its a good thing I'm patient.
But still, I thought The North Pole was in Canada? Or was that just me.

Yes, while so called "Man Made Global Warming" causes Governments to tax us for carbon use, why not let the multi national corporations destroy more of our planet while hunting for profits..

Theres no real irony in the fact we might have another war over oil.. it happens every other day
only the place changes,
but this time instead of a middle eastern tyrant that they have to take out to lay claim to their next money making enterprise (thats unsustainable..)
this time the guy thats going to get in the way is Santa Claus..

Indeed i have tried my best to enlighten people upon this subject here. Althought i do agree that pollution is bad.

The effect we have on the overall Earths Climate and temperature is minimal; meager at best.

Heres Proof Global Warming ( Climate Change) Is a Fraud

On the Matter of the subject at hand Canada and Denmark seem to have the two closest large land masses to the North Pole. Seems like they should split it 50/50;

But i Digress perhaps the U.S and Russia are to big to leave out on such expeditions they want a piece of the Pie too.

Ironic because that's where the Germans who started WWII went?

I mean who knows, there was just another news thread talking about an artificial structure under the ice being found by spy satellites. I don't believe in coincidences.

Arctic sovereignty is a top Canadian security priority.

Unfortunately, Harper has cut funding for patrol craft, invested money into unfit American weapons (F-35s over the arctic? F off), and plans to allow the US to patrol our arctic waters for us as part of the SPP as an extension of NORAD.

I say whatever plans we had for the arctic just went out the window. I hope the Yanks freeze up there if they want it so bad.

Don't forget the Americans have "the nuke" and we don't. So if war breaks loose, might as well be friends with those with better weaponry. Hence, a trade off between energy resources and allies in war.

It's Canada and Russia that have a right to the largest chunk of the pie. Denmark is quickly going to be out of play with Greenland soon becoming an independent nation: Greenland is betting a two-year commodity-price boom will bring it closer to ending almost three centuries of Danish colonial rule

Agreed now that Harper won Majority ( Its hard for me to believe )

Harper will commit Treason and buy the Useless F-35's that many other countries are withholding of purchasing because of the Outrageous price. For a Fancy plane that will become obsolete soon enough by robotic planes...

Remember, he only won the majority of the votes; voter turnout was the lowest ever recorded. He doesn't represent the majority of Canadians as much as he represents the majority of those Canadians who still somehow maintain faith in the current political system.

The 'irony' of WWIII being caused by a squabble over Arctic resources for me is that everyone has been looking elsewhere in the globe, thinking in terms of Al Qaeda, Iran, Korea etc and it could all come down to a bun fight over oil under the ice!

The document also said Denmark’s military will strengthen its focus on the Arctic but stressed that the Scandinavian nation will work for peaceful cooperation between Arctic states. Last week the eight members of the Arctic Council - Russia, United States, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland - agreed to coordinate Arctic search-and-rescue missions. The United States has said it wants the cooperation pact to be a template for agreement on more pressing national security issues. Read more: www.dailymail.co.uk...

Ok Ok, maybe they will work it out, but what is this last sentence? A template for more pressing national security issues? What issues are pressing? How can a search and rescue agreement be a template for national security issues? If they are talking about national security issues, surely it should be for INTERnational security issues bearing in mind that finland quite probably don't give a toss about US national security issues. I find that sentence straaange.

Yes i know many Canadians who do not like Harper and what he stands for. I think if more turned out to vote he wouldn't have won a majority.

It was always only a matter of time until greed and profit moved in to ravage and destroy the pristine polar regions.

No-one was interested in these regions since forever, but now they know there is oil there everyone is squabbling over which bit belongs to who.

It is obscene.
