Pa. school gives kids sandwiches as punishment after hot meals go unappreciated

members.beforeitsnews.com

A Pennsylvania school came up with a novel way of dishing out punishment for its students for behaving badly during lunch: No hot meals.
The pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade students at Camp Curtain School have received cold sandwiches this week as punishment for misbehavior, including failure to clean up after themselves, school officials told The Harrisburg Patriot-News.

I am speechless. To punish the misbehaviour of a few children, the school reacts by giving only cold sandwiches. I have two problems with this:
1) What did the children do that was so bad, the whole school was punished?
2) This is seems to fall under the category of cruel and unusual punishment, no?
How fantastic! What a useful way to dish out justice, Big Brother! The Government's control of schools allows it to cut the hot meals!
See, to me, this is just a small version of the government demonstrating that what it gives, it can take away. Whether we are talking about jobs, lunches, health care or gun liscenses, the rule is the same. Perhaps, one day, the government will say, "We saved you from the deadly swine flu pandemic by a vaccine," and take your life away. Welcome to fascism.

Peace,
SeraphNB

A cold sandwich is NOT cruel and unusual punishment.........and definitely not an extreme case of it. It's just a cold sandwich. If the kids were told BEFOREHAND that if they misbehaved that they would not be entitled to a hot lunch and they still broke the rules then that is their problem.

Title is a little misleading don't you think? The kids did get food not like they went hungry. So they get a sandwich instead of a hot meal like millions of workers across the country.

Seriously what do you want to do...let the kids go wild?

This is the problem with the country today, to many people out there are afraid to get a little tough with kids and this isn't even tough.

Your tears have little sympathy here.

the system is just getting sicker and sicker. if anyone has the means to extract their children from this malignancy and take charge of their education themselves then I suggest you do so. Each day there seems to be more and more confirmation that I did the right thing.

For those who think that the punishment is no big deal try and look at it from a psychological perspective. The institution that is school is becoming more and more like a jail every day. Supression of information, lies from those in charge, things in place to make sure that certain groups profit highly (think contracts with security and surveillance), random interrogations by police officers or worse...fake ass toy cops who think they are gods due to a teeny bit of power...and now sandwiches, lol. If you have ever been arrested you understand about that last one.

If my kid misbehaves he get's sent to his room with no dinner. I'm not about to let any kid walk over me and think they can get away with whatever they want...

Kudos to this school

Yeah, I've got to side with you on this one, friend.

I personally LIKE cold sandwiches, and when I was in school, a wooden paddle was used instead of sandwiches I enjoy anyway. My mom used to spank me as well.

There are some things going on these days that really bother me, but I have to admit that sensationalism makes that list as well. Cold sandwiches don't - and if the whole school was effected, well, isn't this just an example of "fine, if no one wants to take responsibilty, then everyone stays late after school" to motivate the rest of the student body to policy itself?

See, my problem is that they did not provide any warning to the children. I happen to know the parents of one of the Kindergarteners, who is very upset, as their child did absolutely nothing wrong.

Peace,

It's still a stupid thing to do to kids and childish in its own right.

The responsibility to teach these kids is partially on the school and partially on the parents... so they fail. Giving someone a cold sandwich isn't going to teach anyone anything. Perhaps they should start giving them cots to sleep on and lock them in a cell until its time for class?

Did we just read different articles here?

Which part exactly bothered you so much...perhaps I missed something?

Hmmm. If they withhold ALL food and water for several weeks, and ensure no one smuggles any in to the little monsters, think how well behaved they will all be. Just sitting there all stiff and quiet.

They still ate, what if the ovens broke, they would get the same meal they were just "punished" with... if you want to call it that....

The schools are screwed up horribly, but not because of this... lets raise a stink about something that matters! how about how the mentally unstable children are being moved to SALT because they "act out" even though it is part of their disorder....

BTW, SALT is sort of like a corrections center disguised as a school, complete with guards and body scanners...

Oh whooptie do. Maybe next time the students will clean up after themselves. You know, there was a time when we all had to bring lunch from home, that we were charged extra for school lunches, remember that? Stop pampering the kiddies, teach them manners and maybe they won't run wild at school. Seems your idea of cruel and unusual punishment is contributing to the problem, no?

I realized I was not clear in my point so I edited my post....but as a mom...I always kind of laugh when people use passive aggressive, roundabout ways to get cooperation from children. It doesnt get results and instead seems to breed resentment because the kids know they are being treated like idiots. If a kid is being a jackass, get to the heart of the matter. Sticking a sandwich in his hand as opposed to the normal federal grade slop isnt going to do squat.

What's wrong with a sandwich? lol I love sandwiches.

It's not like the kids weren't allowed to eat at all.

What a spoiled people we have become when we equate eating sandwiches as being starved... and extreme punishment. Oh my. lol

Right, but not having any consequences for their actions isn't going to teach them anything either. It's just a freaking cold sandwich, anyways. If my kid came home and whined about having to have a sandwich instead of a hot meal I'd probably laugh at them.

i believe it would be seen as cruel if parents used food as punishment.

"you did not tidy your room, not proper meal for you boy! (evil laugh)". so my problem here is why schools think it is o.k. to use those kind of methods.

what next? if they misbehave ferther they will be put on bread and water?

Yeah...I still think this punishment is no big deal.

No offense, but...it's food. They didn't get beat. And there are still LOTS of good schools out there staffed by people who like kids. Did any of that other horrible stuff you mention happen in this instance?

No. They got sandwiches. Good lord, do these people have such perfect lives that THIS causes such a big stink?
