Unfortunately he's right.

ATS as far as I have seen promotes ignorance and offers reinforcement of ignorance in the form of positive social rewards when more and more people agree and pat each other on the back for being right.

If a group of people band together around ANY idea no matter how ridiculous, it turns into an echo chamber where each persons lack of proof but their considerable enthusiasm helps to spark and maintain other peoples enthusiasm. Once that happens the group becomes convinced that they are correct because so many of them believe the same thing.

Please don't be insulted. I mean no offense.

It's a standard human trait and it has benefited humanity all the way back to the trees. But having a group agree that rocks can talk doesn't mean that rocks can actually talk.

But a group can fight back if evidence or another consensus contradicts their belief. It becomes an attack against the group, defensiveness increases the bond of the group and then the group will take counter intuitive and even purposefully contradictory standpoints, and they do so without understanding that they are doing more as a bonding tactic for their group identity than they do because they actually believe in the "idea" of what they are defending.

Occam's Razor. You really need to look at the simplest explanation as the most probable unless you can produce evidence that a more complex explanation is more valid.

The idea that Nasa knows there is an extinction level event coming, and they are hiding it for the benefit of some ruling elite and possibly their own can't stand up to the reality of the whistle blowing culture in which the world finds itself.

Hero complex, rockstar witnesses, underground celebrity. All of the potential benefits from exposing such information would vastly exceed any motivations to keep it secret. State secrets are released constantly even if there is tiny potential that this information will end up in the news because most people want to feel like they are "the source" and the excitement drives them to release information that isn't even secret, as long as they think it is supposed to be secret.

ATS is a prime example of how people will constantly rehash the same information because they have an ingrained need to spread the truth and garner the glory that comes from letting the cat out of the bag.
Someone always wants to be the hero.
Hollywood has been training us to do this since the 1940's. It's a common trait in Americans especially to want to root for and be the underdog in epic conflicts. It conforms to the national identity we've built for ourselves over 200+ years of re-writing out history to say that our separation from England was based on Ideals and Principles and Freedom and not the avoidance of taxes and the opportunity to exploit the seemingly endless resources that they found on this continent when they really started exploring it.

If you ask the cook, in his opinion, his cheeseburger is the best cheeseburger in the world. Because if he doesn't believe it, he can't convince you to buy it.

Wow free publicity is always nice!

However, does anyone else get the feeling that the reason why NASA is giving us some free advertisement is to try and distort the true meaning behind our threads? What I mean is that perhaps NASA, or TPTB for that matter, are under the impression that if they discuss our forum through the MSM there will be an exponential increase in popularity. While this is what we strive for, to ultimately open the eyes of all, perhaps they're banking we fold under the pressure in the sense that people will come on and post messages leading to redundant conversations and ultimately a loss of the message.

The reason being that here at ATS, among other forums such as godlikeproductions, members are beginning to challenge the norm and we could be viewed as a liability that needs to be dealt with swiftly.

Tactical ploy? Perhaps, or perhaps it's time for me to ease up on the paranoia
Nonetheless, always nice to be appreciated! Keep up the good work friends!

Astrobiology is a fake branch of science. Nobody in that field of study has any credibility in my mind.

Since when is Wikipedia considered a "dependable" site?

It could be stated as the following......... : Since when was ATS a dependable site?? If 10% of ATS predictions came true the planet earth would have been eaten by lizards and shot back out the lizards' anus 1000 times by now and the TBTB would have a bunker in the Lizard's nut sack and would have made a deal to save all the hot women and coc aine for themselves.

If Comet Elenin were going to impact us, they probably wouldn't bother telling us anyway, because to do so would cause worldwide pandemonium of the worst kind (knowing human nature). In the event of such an occurance, even TPTB are gonna be as screwed as everyone else, I couldn't care if they did sink themselves into bunkers. In the very slim chance that they would survive, the planet would be in such a condition that it may very well be uninhabitable unless they had some serious survival skills (which they probably wouldn't have because others have always served them so they did not have to do much for themselves). Even so, survival would be brief. Regardless of how much they may squirrel away, their provisions would be finite.
Anyone up top who was left would probably realize that these folks coming out of the bunkers may very well have something they don't and exhibit no hesitation in taking it from them, violently if necessary.
Even if they have spaceships (which I doubt they have), where are they going to go? Even if they did have these spaceships, who is going to decide who goes and who stays? That right there is gonna cause some major infighting.
No good in trying to throw around money, at that point it will have been made absolutely worthless, and previous social status isn't going to matter one whit.
I imagine it would be this realization that would be the biggest suprise to whatever ex-elite that might still be around.
The Universe, to me, is like a huge billiard table with oodles of room and at the same time, many things flying around...sure, we can plot a course, and chances are it will follow that course and not impact; however, there is the chance that some other object will smash into another and just goof up all kinds of calculations, and that change in calculations may prove fatal.
Hell, you never know..there are very few absolute guarantees in life but there are whole semis full of reasonable assumptions, lol

I hope whatever you claimed dibs on is edible, wearable, or live-insidable. Remember if you die, you can't take it with you, and you might not be able to come back to see what happened to it either, lol

There are so many folks both amateur and professional, looking into the heavens..but it is so vast and so much real estate to have to monitor. We humans should not be so arrogant as to think that we've got the Universe sewn up, lest we get caught up in some Final Destination/Rube Goldberg/Where-In -The Heck -Did-That-Come-From type of foolishness.
Be as prepared as you can, expect the unexpected but in the meantime, have some good, clean fun!

My thoughts exactly. That's been the official line too, "use Wikipedia for more honest and truthful information". Ok.....so while we wade through the latest additions of fact such as "Hugh Jackman is an Australian actor best known for playing Wolverine. he is also gay", we'll see the truth won't we?

/sarcasm

Hugh Jackman is gay?
The people at work are gonna be surprised to say the least.

I mistrust any "official" or unofficial information that comes from the "government" (very big blanket term) because the big "G" has coached that behavior and trained us as Americans to be distrustful. Government in its own category is distrustful (name one country who trusts theirs, countries that don't know any better excluded) because they have to be sometimes, and I get that (imagine a guy on the street corner yelling " we are going to kill OBL tomorrow at this location at this time! Don't tell the bad guys so it will still be a surprise!" all ears are listening). The US happens to be very bad at lying, at least to its own people. With me stating the obvious, lets move on. ATS (which I am not speaking officially for) isn't "Jerry Springer", no one in the back room poking people with sticks screaming "GIT 'EM EARL!". People (also a blanket term) make the DECISION to believe what they will, based on any information they may find through their desire to inquire about the subject in the first place. People will find a place to gather and discuss this information, based on similar likes and dislikes. I choose to visit this site and read/respond to the information contained within because I want to. Therefore, when someone "blames" ATS for spreading hoaxes, that someone is blaming people for exercising more than a few constitutional laws (the right to free speech and right to gather publicly) and...people are not websites...we are flesh and blood, capable of reasoning and using our thumbs. For an astrobiologist to confuse people speaking openly with a digitally constructed medium and public forum, uh....mmmm. Really? Hold on, what is this!? Words on the side of this window that say" believe everything we say because it is all 100% true and we demand you obey, so help us god"!?. Oops, sorry, my mistake, it say's DENY IGNORANCE!

He is correct. Elenin is harmless, and 2012 is bull.
It is a hoax spread by the history channel for cheap ratings and entertainment.

Is it a coincidence because you say so?

Have you personally seen Elenin?Do you know for a fact 2012 is a hoax?

Source please before you judge!

Yes, I have personally seen the comet. It was a small fuzzy dot on a picture taken through a (quite large) large telescope. I have also seen a picture of Leonid Elenin and have seen discussion threads where he talked about his discovery, way before anyone made up the ideas that it was "a spaceship/planet/Nibiru/going to hit Earth/dwarf star/going to cause Earth changes & pole shifts".

Do I know 2012 is a hoax? I know the year 2012 will happen, 2012 follows 2011. Will there be disasters? Yes, there are disasters every year. Will it be like the film/books/prophecies? Highly unlikely, far more likely to be similar to a previous year.

I have posted my sources several times before and also in this very thread. Perhaps you just missed them.

My judgement was based upon what I know.

I do know that there is no causal link between numerological games you might play, or semantic similarities and the real world.
