I study nuclear science
I love my classes
I got a crazy teacher, he wears dark glasses
Things are going great, and they're only getting better
I'm doing all right, getting good grades
The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades,
I gotta wear shades

I've got a job waiting for my graduation
Fifty thou a year -- buys a lot of beer
Things are going great, and they're only getting better
I'm doing all right, getting good grades
The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades
I gotta wear shades

Well I'm heavenly blessed and worldly wise
I'm a peeping-tom techie with x-ray eyes
Things are going great, and they're only getting better
I'm doing all right, getting good grades
The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades
I gotta wear shades

has any effort gone into analysing the light from the Sun from space instead of the Earths' surface...

Yes I quote it in my first post on pg 11 It is called EVE www.nasa.gov...

I agree with the OP. I actually had a conversation years ago about noticing the sun is white and not yellow like I remember back in the 70's

If to our eyes, the sun "looks" differently, it may be due to aging, and a change in wavelength sensitivity. But if our instrumentation is seeing a change, thats a whole different ball of wax.

I also agree that it is a symptom of magnetic feild reversal ,I live in Canada and even though our summers here are short i have noticed that they have become even shorter and the sun dose not get nearly as warm as it used to, when i was a kid i remember summers here got to be at least 35 degrees if not higher and now our seasonal tempratures have dropped far below average it seems that as the magnetic feild drops so dose the temprature maybe thats what happened to the dinasours???.not to mention all the climate change and natural disasters around the other parts of the world lately and any astronomer knows the influences and effects of the sun and moon and planets on the earth. For instance im pretty sure the japan earthquake coincided with the eclipse of the moon or the new moon im not sure i cannott remember, but i did do the homework the day of the earth quake and they were in correlation with each other.

But is it a change in the Suns output of light or just our ability to perceive certain colors?

There has been a slight shift in the Sun's output NASA: Solar Dynamics Observatory Mission News

It seems some one got a hold of the information and preceded to blow it into a major drama.

Great post & first time I have put anything on here.. oh, to be a lurker for ever..not!

I thought I was going nuts this week but maybe not? I kept thinking the reflective surfaces in my kitchen/floor/anything white looked like they had a violet/purple stain whenever the sun came out & I even asked my boyfriend to check.. he couldn't see anything different. So - glad to hear I am not alone in percieving different colours - have to admit previous post about smog/pollution may well be the reason. Or maybe the gov have been having some HAARP lessons above our heads - the weather here is totally nuts.Worst floods/fires/heat since records began.

The UV is a real worry- we have a whopping great hole in the ozone layer above Victoria & only idiots sunbathe.

I moved to Melbourne, Aus, 2 yrs back & had 20/20 vision on leaving UK - I now am heading for an eye test/glasses- it's either spending too much time on here or the UV is frying my eyes - big risk factor for cataracts peeps- keep yer sunglasses on ;-)

Laters!

In the past few years, I've developed an allergy to the sun -- even just having my arm out the window while driving on a sunny day leaves it covered in blistery red welts. Any sort of prolonged sun exposure leaves any exposed skin covered in rashes and welts. This never happened when I was younger -- I was even a lifeguard and spent entire summers in the sun, with no itching or rashes.

I can definitely see the difference (white light instead of golden), but more than that, I can feel it!!

I have a sever Red-Green color blindness so my ability to distinguish many colors in that spectrum have always been off, but I've noticed over the past few years that many things have taken on a new viberance. The sky is bluer, the grass is greener, etc. Colors just seem to pop more than they did before.

So... The effect, is just like a UV filter for a camera?
Does that mean that the sun is giving out Less UV light?
Or that the Atmosphere is filtering out More UV light than before?

I don't know about what it looked like in the 70's compared to now as I was just a wee lad. However, I can subjectively say that even this last month I've noticed how different the light looks overall from what it did before that. It just looks different. Also, I noticed that being inside makes me very warm even though the A/C might be on, but as soon as I go outside, I am immediately refreshed even as the sun beats down.

The electrical environment determines what its internal parts (plants, animals, minerals, etc) will change/transform to in order to maintain charge balance. Change. Or die. That's what I think the sun is telling us. Why? Because it's own power source is also changing (and it's not nuclear power, it's electrical) - www.thunderbolts.info

Thank you for bring up such great topic! I S$#t you not, but I have also been noticing the colors of the sun to be very different then I used to remember. My witness is my wife, I've been telling her for years every so often, when I really notice the change ... "do you notice how the colors of the sun is different, then it used to be"

I'm 30 now, but I recall when I was around 10 how colorful our sun was, it was never too harsh on the eyes, never had sun burned, etc.. I came to few conclusion why the sun is the way it is now!

- Pollution: Because of the pollution in our world is increasingly getting more and more, maybe all this can be one reason to why the color of the sun is more dull and harsh now! but then I can argue myself... I travel lots and even the most remote place I've been the colors do change a little from say the cities, but not he same and never as colorful as it used to be!

- Sun: Maybe something is changing about our sun, all this natural disasters happening around us is NOT normal! Something is in the air...

Anyhow, I don't have the answer, all I can say is that SOMETHING has been changing in our world on a mass scale, specially around 1990s or so... and yes people have been noticing this shift... for good or bad.. I don't know! But I'm an optimist and so all I can do is hope for the best, while living every moment for what it is!

but I disagree with you the sun has changed, it's waking up (our sun has a cycle you know..)

Actually you have that backwards we are headed into a deep solar minimum

NASA reduces forecast for Solar Cycle 24 again

In December NASA had reduced its forecasts for SC24 to a peak sunspot number of 64 being reached in June 2013. Now less than two months later, the latest forecast has been reduced again to a peak sunspot number of 59 to be reached in June / July 2013.... ktwop.wordpress.com...

Graphs of cycles 21 to 23 show the peaks between 150 and 200: www.solen.info...

Therefore Cycle 24 is predicted to be much weaker.

Very interesting thread. I wish I could actually see the sun, but living in the great NW...well....I haven't seen the sun for many weeks. Unusally cold here with lots of grey skies.

This is just a personal reflection but I 100% agree with the O/P. The sun is whiter, the light far harsher on the eye and its early - as in this year the harshness has started at the start of april rather than May. How can I tell? because I have had to get out the Cat. 4 sunglasses for being on the water and out in the mountains.

The life boat crew my mum works for used to get issued Cat. 3 glasses for summer but now get 4s and the sun screen has gone from a spf 10 to a 20. She knows because she buys the stuff (Please continue to support this worthy charity through your donations!) she also is absolutely certain that from when I was a kid (early 70s) to now the summer sun is far less yellow and the sky above far less blue, almost washed out / faded look.

The cosmic ray count is much high and this could be causing the burning.

Personally I've not noticed any changes to light levels. I do lots of work outside in the spring/summer/fall, shine and sometimes even rain.

However I would guess there are a number of factors that could impact color, brightness etc. I should imagine such factors as...

-Tilt of the Earths axis
-The mix of the gaseous soup that is our atmosphere
-Particulate matter thrown into the atmosphere and where that matter was from
-Chemical make up of the oceans

and many more then I can't think of off the top of my head.

So I would say that if we -didn't- notice a change from time to time that would be a problem. The Earth is not a static enviroment, its only our short little lives that make it seem so.

In short, unless it killing life, I wouldn't worry about it.

Oh please, stop this spiritual mumbo jumbo!

Ever heard of ozone layer and ozone depletion? It is common science available for many decades. The ozone absorbs ultra-violet light. Since the ozone level is dropping every decade by 4-5%, the colour spectrum is shifted more towards the blue. Simply it means more of the Sun's ultra-violet rays reaching ground level and explains your perception of "white" light.

Why you prefer to trust some magic bs instead of hard and proven science? Astounding level of ignorance in an age of science...
