Question what does a comets tail look like when it's coming at you, I'm sure not the same as going past you ?

Depends on where the sun is with respect to where you and the comet are.

Read my post again, you'll find that I am referring to comet Elenin making mainstream not YU55, I know that YU55 made mainstream, and ovbiously by making the mainstream it would have to have been in a NASA newsletter.

Comet Elenin on the other hand, may have made the newsletter, but it didn't make the mainstream like YU55.

Exactly if something that has a tail and is coming right at you its tail will be out of your line of sight either blocked by the actual object or what part of the tail that does show will appear smaller. But if you have a profile view say from the side then the tail will appear larger and then as you said reflect more light. Think about it.

The ionic tail of a comet always faces opposite of the sun, the dust tail sometimes is slightly tilted from exact opposite of the sun, this is how some or most comets have two tails. They both face away from the sun and never can point towards the sun, it (the tail) rotates around the sun like a ball on the end of a string twirled around, with the ball being the core of the comet, the actual mass.

Exactly but what if you are directly between the Sun and said Comet? It's tail as nasa said would appear "wimpy" wouldn't it?

When comets pass close to the sun, some of the ice evaporates, and forms a coma typically 10,000–100,000 km (rarely up to one million km) wide. Also, the solar wind (charged particles radiating from the sun) pushes a tail of ions (electrically charged atoms) directly away from the sun. Solar radiation pushes away dust particles to generate a second tail that curves gently away from the sun and backwards.

The coma and tails have a very low density—even the best vacuums produced in laboratories are denser. The Earth passed through a tail of Halley’s comet in 1910, and it was hardly noticeable. But comets reflect the sun’s light very strongly, which can make them very spectacular when they are close to both the sun and Earth.

Comet's coma and tail have also proved to have little to no effect on spacecraft, and within a comet's coma the light intensity we see here on earth is hardly noticeable until the comet core is in sight. Reference this post for a visual.

Hi, guys. I just thought I would pop in to yet another hopelessly derailed thread, and let everyone know that C/2010 X1 Elenin is a normal comet, moving on a normal, highly elliptical solar orbit. I'm sure that some of you are getting sick of reading the same thing, but I will continue to do so....over and over and over again.....until it finally sinks in.
