I hate bugs but scientists doing this killed billions of ants and destroyed a wonder that most likely took years to build, in order to satisfy their curiosity.
Doesn't seem right. IMO
The queen had already died so the anthill was empty the workers moved on so no ants were harmed
Ummm........Until of course you see them start to pour the cement.....what do you suppose those little things crawling out of the hole are......................hmmmmm?...............yep.......them thars ants.......

Perhaps, but you are assuming it was still active... I am not sure if it was or not. If it was, then what you see is an ugly side of science...Sometimes, Animals and bugs do get hurt or killed in the name of Science... " greater good" kind of idea.
If it helps think of it this way. Animals have died in order to help us reach many major and important scientific and medical breakthroughs. For example, Polio, Diptheria, Mumps, Rubella and even Hepatitis. Those are just a few off the top of my head.
They are also using animals to do research and make breakthroughs in hopes of curing AIDS, Cancer ,paralysis, Parkinsons and many other horrible illnesses.
Science is not always pretty, but this kind of thing has been going on for about as long as Humans have tried to understand the world around them.
Now, that said, this is a really amazing video. I know that in the past the US government and Military has studied Ants, how they organize and live and even fight together in hopes of creating better war strategies...Imagine if we start studying how they live in a community, how they build these sort of "Utopian" community homes... Maybe there is a thing or two we can learn from these guys about living and working together.
Who knows.

I do feel terrible about the ants colony, however after spending the last 2 months trying to fend ants from crawling all over me in this ant infested room, Ive lost a lot of compassion for the ant species as a whole. At first I didnt know what to do, I didnt want to just start killing them like some sort of interspecies homocidal maniac, but eventually my concerns about the ants washed away as it began to seem overwhelming and never ending. I had to do the only thing I could do. Squash them like the ants they are. This ant genocide may seem barbaric from the outside, but those creeps should keep to themselves. Maybe if they had some respect for humanity we would have a little more respect for them! haha still...poor ants

It is fascinating, but it also a shame that scientists generally have to kill so much stuff before they can study it. Scientists are reductionists, and reductionism is fundamentally destructive because it has to separate everything into more and more independent parts in order to study it. It's the same reason why our technology and medicine has so many unwanted side effects, whereas viewing the organism from a holistic takes into account what is best for the entire being, not just a few parts. Can't wait to evolve....

Wow that was really cool thanks for the video, I used to spend hours out around the neighborhood ant hills when I was kid so this was pretty interesting to see. The structure looks plant like in its nature, so cool I love ants!

If I killed any bug it was because I had to or it was an accident.
If there's a couple ants I don't really care for it.But if there's an infestation then obviously something has to been done about it because it's your house they're trying to take over..but when it's just some ants outside somewhere minding their own business then why kill them?

I agree we dont need to kill any bugs if there just minding there own business.

Great find, thank you.
Now only if we could get a human collective in this day and age to do something just as positive, we might be able to save ourselves.
Ants can do this but we can't ? And we say we're evolved.

The buildings we build are infinitely more complex than ant tunnels (impressive as they are), and as someone who has worked in construction for decades I can assure you it takes much more coordination than digging holes in the ground. I think the vast majority of people in this world take their environment completely for granted, they have absolutely no idea the incredible efforts that go into keeping them warm, dry and comfy.edit on 24-4-2011 by SavedOne because: (no reason given)

Sorry dont agree. I have worked on constrution too. Every thing from concreting to building and i was a roofer for the most of my time. I can tell you that building a box with a roof above ground is the easiest to do then building a construction under ground. Humans cant even do that properly, as how many mining collapses have us dumb arsed humans had lately.??????
So the ants ARE smart, and the building that creation was a magnificent peice of building ( Consruction) and i reacon that you and your builder mates cant recreate what the ants built. I would love to see you try to build it.
Bet you cant.edit on 25-4-2011 by meathed because: (no reason given)edit on 25-4-2011 by meathed because: (no reason given)

Also , stop crying about the dead ants, less than .0001% of ants died.
