And this is the other danger that belief in 2012 poses. I have already pointed out supporters in the doomsday theory can have drastic negative impacts on people if nothing happens, but this kind of thinking can be just as dangerous. It leads to the belief that we don't have to be responsible for anything in the world since we're just going to get some kind of Get Out of Jail Free card in 2012.

A comet is a mass.....mostly water ice....that, upon approach to a heat source (our Sun, for example) begins to out-gas....forming the "coma" (think of it as a spherical 'halo') that envelops the nucleus. This is just gas and dust, about as dense as the exhaust from your car's tailpipe....

The "tail" is an extension of this coma....it is "blown" by the pressure of the protons and electrons from the Solar Wind.


This is very, very basic astronomy....I urge people to go, study and learn more, on their own. AWAY from the silly "doom" websites....they are full of idiotic garbage written either by jokers who like to whip people's fears, or by uneducated, ill-informed boobs who merely write out their nonsense "opinions".....

A comet's tail is no threat whatsoever. It is composed of gas, dust, and some small rocks. We pass through them all the time. That is what causes meteor showers.

Rocks a little bit larger than a grain of sand are very dangerous......we track just about everything in orbit bigger than a half dollar to try to keep the space station out of the way


you halfway correct, but you make it seem like you know stuff, like there isnt a danger and we do it all the time....
It was just a week or two ago the people on space station had to go to a safer part because they thought they were going to get hit by a peice of space debris.....It was serious,,,it made MSM.....

ISS is a tiny dot in the space compared to the earth itself. I don't know how can they calculate the trajectory of elenin with such an accuracy. Something is not right here. If they are worrying about the elenin hitting the ISS, it is a sure certainty that the elenin will hit the earth also.

It is like if you worry about a space rock may hit your car, it is a 100 percent certainty that the rock will hit the earth. Remember ISS is very tiny object close from the earth compared to any nearest trajectory of any major size comet.

Also, in the past few months, not years, months. We have learned many things about comets, such as they are not mostly ice. They are mostly dust and rock with ice being formed at the surface.....

A government shutdown does not mean the government locks the doors and disappears. Some services would be disrupted, that's all. Not sure how a budget battle has anything to do with a comet?

Put the path and coordinates, then we that have a decent telescopes, can see for ourselves the suposed "comet of Death".

I agree that the ISS needs to be very wary of such debris. However, the poster I was replying to was saying that by passing through the comet's tail we were all going to die. This is fearmongering of the highest caliber and needs to be called out. The Earth regularly passes through such tails and it has never killed us all before.

OP actualy was on to something, ive just looked at a few elenin videos on youtube and all the 'intelligently' sounding replys all have accounts created shortly after elenins discovery 10 december 2010.

Cool post.! So.. the date oct 23..the date where elenin is supposed to hit us is a lie?? I need to know because i need to know when i have to move out of my city!.. It would be kind of cool if you can put some more information!
