I gained custody of my 9 year old son from his emotionally unstable mother. When he came to live with me, he was sticken with his mother's anxieties, my fiance and I spent months with the aid of child services, to bring him back to being a normal child. He's now happy, safe and living in a small town, free from the BS of city life and the crazyness of his past, my only regret is that i didn't do this when he was an infant, my naiveness and belief that all children should be with their mothers was dangerous.

Not all woman are fit to be mothers (can we blame today's materialistic society, traditional sex roles are thrown to the side in lieu of progress?) and a blind court system that believes in maintaining the cultural status quo are harming thousands of children.

Do what you legally can to fight for your child, OP.

If she is failing in her roles you need to do whatever is legally possible to fix the situation. It is your responsibility as the child's father. I would recommend counseling sessions with the mother present. if the child is too young to do this, ask for her to do parental counseling. Also, I am very surprised that you are only allowed one day a week, I don't claim to know the laws in every state, but in FL and NJ they generally award the other parent every other weekend in addition to the one day a week.
