Perhaps big pharma will consider investigating this if they think there are potential disease curing and profitable solutions that can be derived from such a path. Don't think so though, as there are far to many real world things that presently exist that have just as much potential for profit that we have not explored, and they are much cheaper to explore, lol.

Common sense folks, combined with a knowledge of reality, protects your from ignorance.

The fact that they think they can "reverse engineer" some type of dinosaur from chicken DNA is very old news to anybody who follows this type of stuff. Still wont be a real dinosaur though, as we have no real dinosaur DNA to compare it to (despite what you think). Bits and pieces just don't count.

Bringing dinos back to life via preserved DNA is pure and total fantasy. Period. But, bring dino-like animals into existence via genetic modifications of existing DNA is able to be done. It is simply a matter of money, that's all. There isn't enough scientific study money to go around in order to fund such a project, however if capitalism took hold of this, then yes it could be done...as it would be profitable. Think about it.....never before seen animals at every zoo in the world, endless profitable documentaries selling advertising talking about the subject, news selling add time based on viewership interested in the (admittedly short) news cycle this would develop. If it can be profitable, and if the right person can convince the right people that it is, we will see this happen.

But they wont be anything close to dinosaurs, and anybody that says otherwise doesn't know anything about this subject other than the fantasy they read on the internet. You know they type, the folks that wont read real articles about it, but rather read folk's opinions about such articles (which are often ignorant and embarrassing). I would love to fund making this happen, but it would cost the same amount as it would to develop a best selling designer pharmaceutical......

Yeah, I know reality sucks, but I live in it and so do you....despite what you want to believe, think you know, or what you read on the internet.

Lets add this to our laundry list of problems?
Are we sure we want a dinosaur right now?
Your mother and I are going to be the ones that end up feeding it.

no scientists are not playing god....because god doesnt exist

they are playing science fiction for now...maybe science fact in the future but why would they want to? why bring back these creatures they wont benefit us or the earth in any way...seems like they just want to do it for the sake of it.

the story is from 2008... its been 3 years. whats the latest?

If they find the actual structure of the DNA, it would only be a matter of finding a compatible "long-lost relative" of said reptile. Completely possible as long as they can extract a viable sample.

IMVHO, this has probably been done underground already.

On a different note. I seriously doubt humanity did, or could've wiped out the dinos. With the technology we have now, sure. However, these guys were using (on average) rock, sticks, fire and starting the use of shaped rocks/metals, so if anything, they probably would have been the prey, not predator.

Hi there scientists !

well, here's a question i was footsin around with, why not focus on the cures for many diseases/viruses already existing TODAY ..raaaather than breathing life into those ' unknown ' diseases dinasaurs carry?

.... just a wild thought.
edit on 10-4-2011 by steven704 because: (no reason given)

Plenty of animals have given us deep insight into why certain human diseases and cancers exist. Especially since many animals are immune to such things. The cure for a lot of these illnesses could be within a dinosaur. Furthermore the amount of funding this could generate for scientists interested in DNA would be massive.

As for persons thinking Jurassic Park was a documentary ... I don't want to sound like the crazy redneck person here, but am fairly sure dinosaurs aren't bullet proof like in the movies. It might be cruel to bring them back unless they have some dinosaur friends but I can't imagine modern day people keeping them behind wire fencing.

I am a Christian but I don't think that bringing dino's back is an act of God, evil or whatever, it is just a scientific discovery. I take panadol if I have a headache because of science, that does not make me the devil.

I actually think this would be neat having some dinosaurs, of course it may turn out like Jurrasic Park but who knows, like someone else said previously they probably have already done it underground but we just don't know it yet.

Yes it would be cool, but didn't these people see Jurasic Park?

Where you going to Put them?, and just like in the Movie:
"Nature always finds a Way". This is very true

But arn't these Dinosaures going to emit vast quantities of Farts
with green house gaes of Methane?

Sniff, Sniff, was that you......

Whats the latest?

Well, as those scientists mentioned, it would take at least a decade to map their entire DNA! So just hang on - perhaps by 2015 or so?

But then there's that darned 2012 Nibiru thing! Oh woe! We wouldn't be alive to see those dinosaurs in action anyway!

Waiting for the "we shouldnt play god" posts to roll in now.

Its not just that we shouldnt play god. Its the fact that dinosaurs are too damn dangerous. Ive watched Jurassic Park too many times to think that we can just keep them contained.

If this happens, it will pretty much make my life. I wanted to be a paleontologist so bad when I was little. If I had to choose between this and a free trip into space, wow, I think I would have to go with this.

All I keep hearing now is that goofy video voice from the movie saying "It's a dino-saur!" and "Dino DNA."

Why would anybody want to do this , unless it is just to create a freak show ?
It's a pretty pointless excercise , becuase we wouldn't learn anything from them . Their natural environment no longer exists and a creature like this would have to spend it's life in captivity and for what ?
If one of these ever made it into the wild , it would either starve to death or it would f*&k up the natural environmental balance.

Like I said , pretty pointless .

How about a new one. We should not play sucidial maniacs out of a bent curiosity and sick sense of sensationalism.

Nice article!
The Uk Daily Mail news is from 13th June 2008. So being a bit dated, I looked up more info... I went to the Montana State Univ/ Dept of Earth Sciences: www.montana.edu... & the Paleontology Dept: www.homepage.montana.edu......and Dinosaur Research
They haven't succeeded yet, as there's now news of it, good stuff nonetheless.
Hope that helps
