The live Earthquake map makes it look like there were two in separate locations, very close to one another. Now they are showing "3" 7.4 magnitudes, but two of them are in the exact same location, at the same time. It says they get their info direct from the USGS feed.

When is this Ring of Fire going to pop in California? I hate to speculate like that, but the likelihood of it happening in California seems to be going up with all the activity around the plate. Either way, this is a bad thing. I hope the people of Japan can get through this. My thoughts are with them.

I saw that too...3 or 4 explosions lit up the sky in the distance...I hope it was only transformers...

Quite close to a area known as Cat Island, aswell as to the Hydrothermal area on the Sendai mainland. Looking at the USGS preliminary data the first 7.4 was at 42seconds before the other leaving this amount of time for the P-Wave distance/time that triggered the second. I'd expect either quake to be revised given the exact magnitudes between each leading me to expect the seismometers are overcompensating the P-Wave triggering off the second shake.

I agree with you. I was reading someone's posts here a few weeks back and they were explaining plate tectonics and the effects on all of the other plates. I wish I understood it enough to fully comprehend the outlook for CA.

It seems logical to me that all of this shifting has to go somewhere --> CA. However, I was reading multiple instances whereby that may not necessarily be the case.

Shrug. Fingers crossed and thoughts and prayers out to all of us.

Great find on that, I hope it wasnt what caused the EQ, but very disturbing regardless..

Secondly, Can anyone produce footage of those explosions? Im watching CNN and no such footage... Not saying it didnt happen, just interested in seeing it myself. thx

NHK World is reporting it as 4 separate and terrible quakes.

The Meteorological Agency says the initial quake struck at 2:46 PM Friday local time, off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture. The quake's estimated magnitude has been revised upward to 8.4.

At 3:06 PM, a 2nd quake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck almost the same area.

This was followed by a magnitude 7.4 quake at 3:15 PM.
That quake originated off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture, south of the first 2 quakes.

The 4th quake measured a magnitude of 7.2 and struck off Miyagi at 3:26 PM.

A series of tsunami are presently washing ashore. NHK cameras show many cars and houses being swept away in Miyagi and neighboring prefectures. Fires can also be seen in many areas along the Pacific coast.

I can't figure out how to reverse extrapolate the time that it was over the epicenter. Interesting that it happened, though.

My thoughts and prayers are with these poor people.

I do not see a pattern of these eartquakes today, its not relative to the plates, I guess
someone notice this one 8hrs ago in NZ?
