Okay, I could be the last person to figure this out, so laugh it up at my ignorance if that is the case...

It's personally disturbing to me as I have a daughter browsing youtube. Our laptop has the built-in webcam.

If you right click on any video, click "settings", then the adobe box pops up. Click on the second choice from the left...the one that looks like the Illuminati eye on the screen (
)

Now, look at your choices...mine was clicked on Allow, my daughter swears she has never messed with the setting.

Here is a screenshot-

So...I wonder if the default setting is Allow.....Allowing whoever to activate the cam whenever ?

Thoughts ?

Okay that is weird. I wonder if that option really is how it looks. I don't know who would want to spy on me but.

Still weird I really want to see what other people say about this.

Sure your daughter isn't yanking your chain?

Edit: If they really wanted to spy on you though I don't think they would give you the option of turning it off.

I'm pretty sure but even if she was...

I didn't even know the setting existed, much less turned on Allow for God knows how long.

Thats a standard Adobe Flash player setting, you can see it if you right click on any flash window and do the settings (when the settings setting is allowed lol)

I think that as a standard, most websites do Deny as the normal default, while YouTube does it as Allow, since you can upload a web video by recording it on the fly and having it posted to your YT account page. So it'd be a little defeating for the average computer user that has no clue how to do their settings to go in and change it to allow it the first time that you use it.

It's User Friendly!

You CAN change the Global settings on Flash to Deny for any and all websites regardless of defaults if you wish to set it up that way.

ETA: According to Privacy policies, they will not turn on the webcam if you do not press the button to actually start the webcam up yourself, manually.

However, the conspiracy theorist in me says otherwise rofl

That blows my mind if true...

That's a setting in flash, not youtube specifically. (When I used to play Evony, which is flash based as well, it had the same thing, even though Evony has no use for the setting.) The youtube player is flash based. It's just a generic setting, and by default I believe it is set to allow. The purpose for it is that there are various and sundry browser voice chat and video chat, and recording platforms that use flash, as well as youtube's video recorder. You can turn it off, it won't hurt anything. If you ever actually want to record a video directly with youtube, you would need to turn it back on, though.

I have never changed mine....so i assume the default setting is Deny....as thats what mine is set at. Maybe you have allowed it somewhere else and all Flash videos have taken that setting? If you have used websites like chatroulette or anything similar you would have to set it to allow...meaning default is Deny

I am saying delete the picture in your post because you can see your daughters name in the screenshot you took and carelessly posted on a site with very high traffic.

Disable or tape up the webcam, turn off the internal mic under audio properties.

For most websites, no. For YouTube, yes. hehe

Again, though, it's only because you are able to, on the fly, record a video with your webcam and have it posted to the website, so having it default as Allow simply lets the webcam be used by the website when you click to start recording a video.

According to their policies, they won't turn it on otherwise.

Mine is set to deny by default just fyi.

Anyway all it means is that, if you go on a webcam site, chat-roulette or something, then the website is allowed to broadcast your webcam. It isn't anything to worry about. Obviously someone using your computer has perhaps used a webcam site and therefore set it to allow.
Either that or someones watching you when you're naked on your PC......

But seriously, it isn't anything to worry about.
Also major props on watching Rush.
