WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Republican plan for the 2012 budget would cut more than $4 trillion over the next decade, more than even the president's debt commission proposed, with spending caps as well as changes in the Medicare and Medicaid health programs, its principal author said Sunday.

The spending blueprint from Rep. Paul Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, is to be released Tuesday. It deals with the budget year that begins Oct. 1, not the current one that is the subject of negotiations aimed at preventing a partial government shutdown on Friday.

What else can I say? Wow! Now THAT is a budget!

Democrats call for 30 billion in cuts.
Republicans call for 60 billion.
Tea Party?
4 trillion.

Now that is priceless!

I can't believe that there would be anyone against this. But I'm sure we'll hear from a few.

Fantastic. 4 trillion dollars in cuts to important social programs, at our expense.

This money should CERTAINLY be coming from elsewhere...
edit on 3-4-2011 by SPACEYstranger because: trillion!

Take a look at the makeup of the federal budget...

www.publicagenda.org...

Social Security, Medicare, and Defense make up over 50% of our expenditures... just those three items. We can cut every other program in existance and still be in over our heads with regards to the national debt.

Awesome! Right out of the gate and we have someone who wants to raise taxes instead of cutting spending.

Entitlement much?

This is mostly a good plan, unfortunately it doesn't address the sacred cow of the budget, insanely high defense spending. He also doesn't address the most bloated welfare program of all, corporate welfare. But at least it's a start.

Sorry, where did he say taxes? Somewhere else may have been implying corporate bailout funds, defense, etc.

None of it would matter anyway. Our current economy is not capable of sustaining $300M + people will full benefits AND empire building at the same time.

There was an assumption on my part, but that is what I interpreted from the post.

I'm all for spending cuts, but spacy has a point. The people are not the incompetent politicians who mismanaged our budget! Why do the people need to be on the receiving end on the majority of these cuts? I'm still waiting for the GOP to start discussing cuts to our military and pulling back troops that are stationed in countries that can protect themselves. Out military budget is 6 times more than China who is second to none. Are their some social programs that are being abused? Absolutely, and the fat should be cut from those programs. How many corporate programs have the GOP cut? Have they even looked in that area to find cuts? Give me a break, it's one thing to have across the board cuts, but when you're selectively cutting the board in half it's called a fix. These politicians have caused this problem, why don't they cut their salaries? Why don't they start paying into their health care just like they expect everyone else to do? Why don't they start paying into social security and cut their extravagant pensions? Why don't they start reigning back their military expansion policies to help cut our budget? Why raise taxes on the people when corporations are receiving billions and millions in profits and don't pay a cent in taxes? The people of this country are always
attacking themselves instead of looking at who's in charge and who is benefiting from our hardships.

A lot of cuts in education are being made in the name of trimming the fat. And with the looming cuts in healthcare...who will someday take care of these young and healthy folks who are cheering these sweeping changes? Increasingly dumb children? Doctors who have thrown their hands up in defeat because big pharma and the insurance industry now call the shots? A Government that has long since thrown us under a bus? Those NIMBYs proposing all of this? Perhaps a few bites of a GM apple might keep the doctor away.

how about ending the bush tax cuts to the top 2%, bailout spending, and the rampant military budget?

...rather then cutting spending on a supporting crux for the middle and lower classes?

Of course im not calling for a tax hike, at least not for those who cant afford it.

The cuts being proposed are basic cuts BACK to 2008 levels (basically pre-Obama) before he went nuts and went on a spending spree with Pelosi and the gang. So before everyone starts screaming about specifics, lets let them supply them first.
Okay?

The only real solution is for us to stop paying in.

If you want to give then give what you want directly to who you want.

Cut all funding to the government. Force them to wither and die or to round us all up in prison.

Who gets to decide what people can afford? You? Obama?

How about cutting spending. Serious cuts. We, as a country, can no longer afford this spending program of this administration. If cuts are not accomplished, then EVERYONE is going to suffer.

I would suggest cutting the military budget by 50%
but it wouldn't matter if it happened, they would
just find a loophole to fill their criminal pockets.
So what's the use of discussion, you have
to oust TPTB before any real change is gonna
be made. PERIOD !!!

I second that. In addition, let's throw out the FED and allocate
the creation of money back to congress a la the constitution,
and that will eliminate an additional 10% of our national debt
by not having to pay interest on said debt.
edit on 3-4-2011 by Super Katsurio because: added that the 10% reduction would come from not paying interest on said debt

Fine, make the spending cuts...just repeal the drug laws, and eliminate income and property taxes...

Just to clarify, I hope you all know that this whole "its a start" is a sham and the debt cannot be repaid no matter how many cuts are made. The post above me alludes to the reason.

If the GOP get their way and get this $4T hit to
Medicare and Medicaid. Do you realize the
riots that would ensue ???

Stop those checks coming at the
beginning of the month and you will
see 1000% increase in crime rates
in a matter of weeks. You think the
Watts Riots were bad? Compound that
by 10,000 cities nationwide and you will
see unrest like you have never seen before
in history. The Greek riots will be nothing
compared to the mobs in America.

And cutting Medicare to the elder is gonna
be a death sentence to about 50% who are
totally dependent on the system. They all
have families who will join in on those riots.

The GOP better think before they pursue
this one. Or maybe that's their plan to
implement Martial Law, cutting off the checks.
That'll be a sad day.

Why on earth are you getting excited about this? Republicans have been running on a campaign of budget cutting and fiscal conservatism for decades now, and everytime they get in, what do we find? What's more, Republicans are already well aware of the consequences of cutting out medicare and social security will be (especially considering this comment they made in 2009):

Mind you though, I believe we need to made cuts in defense and we also need review some of our social programmes, but to meet that $4 trillion cuts, it would mean that those social programmes would need to be completely eliminated, and I don't see the republicans making that step, they know better.

The only way we are going to cut the budget is to withdraw bases from overseas, cut troop levels and penalizing businesses that continue to hire illegals, or tax the hell out of businesses that shift jobs overseas. And yes, we are going to have to raise taxes. Don't like this reality? Well this is what it's going to take to pay off our debt, and I'm sorry but we all have to pay for it as we supported the actions of the administrations in the past.
