MARCH MADNESS: NANNY STATE RUNS AMOK IN DELAWARE AS GOVT ARBITRARILY TEARS DOWN 60-YEAR-OLD BASKETBALL HOOPS

A Delaware mom climbed atop her family’s basketball hoop Friday in a short-lived bid to keep authorities from ripping it out and confiscating it.
Transportation workers and state police came to her neighborhood in Wilmington Friday morning to remove several basketball goals that officials said were too close to the roadway.

Several residents were sent letters last year warning them that the state’s “Clear Zone” law prohibits trees and other objects from being within seven feet of the pavement’s edge in a residential subdivision.
John and Melissa McCafferty said they’d gotten more than one warning letter, but that police cars and heavy machinery showed up without warning Friday morning to remove the hoops.
While their neighbors weren’t home, the McCaffertys decided to fight back.
Melissa, 39, parked her van underneath the goal, climbed the pole and perched herself behind the backboard, risking arrest. McCafferty said she could only think about how sad her 10-year-old daughter would be about the removal.
“To be honest with you, I really wasn’t thinking. All I was seeing was my 10-year-old’s face,” said McCafferty, who also has two teenagers who like to shoot hoops.
“They threatened to arrest me, and I told them that would be fine. I don’t mind going to jail for my kids,” she added.

Wow.....I'm almost speachless. But not quite.

First of all, I'd like to know a little more of the backstory as to what's going on there. Were the people who's hoops were being taken in violation of some local or state law? I'm assuming state since those were state police and not local law enforcement.

My first reaction though, is even if they were in violation of some law, there had to be a better way to handle it than that. I mean, what the hell kind of law forbids people from having a basketball goal anyway?

I wish I had more to go on. I found the video and thought it was important. I will try to find some background on the story but I don't think there is any justification for taking the basketball hoop. They should have just left it in the drive way. Instead they say... get in your house slave. it's sad.

I've read that the hoops in the sidewalks posed a danger to players and cars. There had been a few accidents already. Fair enough. However I am absolutely disgusted by the way the law enforcement acted. That is not acceptable.

The back story isn't relevant to me because the people taking the hoops are shown to be liars, thugs, thieves, and to be disregarding the sovereignty of the homeowners. That disgusting woman in the grey sweatshirt sounds like every soul-less government or corporate employee with an agenda who will not listen to a human being speak.

A bunch of criminal goons run amok.

Why are the vocals so clear? Toward the end of the video, the subject is standing several yards away, yet his vocation is as audible as if he were right against a microphone that is protected by a windscreen. I would record these initial observations as evidence that the entirety of the footage is questionable with regard to actual rebuttal of sanctioned reaction.

If there was a prolific refute, the subject would have provided documentation that the order had been addressed in a manner according to the HOA guidelines. It takes a precarious amount of refusal to allow for state directed intervention.

Oh, if only the neighbors had guns and balls. I wonder how it would have went down had a militia surrounded the police and demanded they leave the area...

Ok, found a link with a little more backstory. Apparently they were in violation of a

"2005 clear zone law that requires the area adjacent to pavements in residential developments to be free of obstructions such as basketball hoops and bushes."

Link to story...

Here are a few more links with more on the story as well.

Regardless, it was insane the way that it was handled.

Usually when they pass these BS ordinances, there are grandfather clauses built in to them. A hoop that has been up for 60 years should have been exempt. Was I the only one hoping the guy was gonna cane that bitch upside the head at some point?

Except I would have felt bad he would have gotten arrested for it. I could tell he wanted to though!

I can hear where you're going with this and I would be willing to go that route for a different cause, not over a basketball goal that I could easily replace. Things would get real ugly if people came out armed. I would prefer to fight or have a shootout over something more important.
