Is it really necessary to make such personal attacks?

If a site has a mission to follow and rules, then what is wrong with getting others to abide by such rules?

Might as well throw the rules out if no one actually makes an attempt to enforce them!

Yes, congratulations for taking the time to post in such an useless thread.

I'm sure you had nothing better to do with your time at that moment.

Do you feel better now?

Honestly, I think that brevity in responses is a direct result of the social evolution of the web. Before the advent and popularity of say, Twitter or even text messaging which is far outpacing even making a simple phone call, I would not be surprised to find that single line posts were far fewer. Hell, I even find myself and my friends/family on facebook increasingly reducing postings to one or two lines.

Fourth line.

Save one-line posts! Sometimes they add a bit of levity to a dire scenario.

I agree that sometimes one line is all it takes; however, that should generally be considered the exception, and not the rule here.

Years ago one-liners were highly frowned upon, and it led to people putting actual thought behind their responses (more than just a few impulsive seconds). Today there appears to be an influx of new/young members treating ATS more like twitter, 4chan, texting, Myspace, etc., and the overall quality in posting has dropped off substantially. Also, it's quite rare that I see a one-liner which doesn't simply parrot/re-phrase another one-liner that's has already been posted in a given thread. Unfortunately, these are often nothing more than simple disparaging/ad hominem style postings as well.

I guess, in the end, one-liners can make reading threads a lot quicker than a few years ago; however, it does get tiring wading through all the current trash.

Here is my input.

As an often one-line poster, here is what I think.

A lot of people use many words to bore you to death.

At least a one-liner does not do that.

Another thing I have noticed - a lot of words tend to cover up the truth.

One-liners get right to the point - and/or, as I have said before, one-liners can be funny and so they lift spirits.

Long live one-liners!

The use of a single line is not against the rules as such - it's the content of the post that matters, and replies such as "I agree, S&F for you" do not contribute.

A one line post which says something is not at all frowned upon, and I have in the past been applauded for one line posts.

So the issue is one of contribution to a thread, not the length or brevity of a post.

If you have an issue with a one liner, alert the mods - that's why we have alert buttons, and also why we have mods.

It might also be a good idea to search for similar topics to this - this particular subject has been done to death in BBQ more times than I care to remember.

It works fine for me, and for several other members I know who use it on a regular basis - perhaps you should get in touch with the staff and find out if you are doing something wrong.

I always thought that it's the giant walls of text trying to convince the "masses" that there's a giant planet heading our way, that clutter this site..hmm

As good a place as any to make a couple of observations:

1) A single sentence post is not always a "one-liner"; If the post contributes to the thread, a single sentence is perfectly fine.

2) Adding "second" or "2nd" doesn't negate in any way that a person posted a one-liner -- a few words that don't add in any appreciable way to a thread. It doesn't do a bit of good to add "second" to your post. In fact, if one is tempted to add "second" that might be a clue to them that their post is not necessarily a contributing one.

3) a true one-line post -- noncontributing post -- can also be actioned as off-topic, or even "manners" or "x-posted", depending upon the terms used in the one-liner.

So what if they are new users, did you ever think that a lot of these "new users" were lurkers before and have just recently decided to start posting because they have had enough of the crap going on in the world and are ready to start speaking up? Myself included, I have been coming here since 2008.

So, a "one-liner" which would fall under the rule could in theory stretch beyond the confines of a single line of text when the message isn't of any contribution and conversely a concise well worded comment of only a few words escapes judgment because of it's valuable contribution.

Therefore, the letter of the law of ONE line posts is somewhat of a metaphor.

Sure wish I could pass out Stars in this forum.
I'd have sprayed several on some of the posts I've read in this thread.

Personaly speaking I get rather agitated by this subject. I have been attacked over one line posts in my time here at ATS, and have made a great effort to be more informatve when I post. However, I also get lambasted for producing long posts, wether or not they contain information which is useful, and wether or not the post is well written, well researched, or how clear my understanding of the subject may be.
If ATS is to have rules which prohibit the use of one line posts, then I would like to suggest that the membership knuckle down and get used to reading large posts instead. Its one thing to complain about one liners, but I have had just as much trouble for posting properly.

I was going to suggest the appointing of a special mod just to deal with one liners. Also, one for duplicate threads.

Would take a load off those dealing with more important stuff. No real issues would need to be dealt with so it's something that could be executed straight away without the need for behind the scenes consultation and decisions by multiple staff.

Obviously, some of the still important one line posts that say something worthwhile should be left, but I too am fed up with whole pages taking up these boards that consist of nothing more than quick responses to make the poster feel better or get a laugh.

Whadyathink?

Sometimes it does only take one line to make a point, and in those cases, I dont think that one liners are bad.

But you are right, they are increasing. I really liked the bonehead on the first page who makes two one liners in a row. That kind of crap should be deleted. If you cant take the time to think out what you are going to say and post it in one post, or edit in a second line to your first one liner, you are just abusing the system.

In my opinion, a large part of the one line issue lately relates to the paid propagandists that join the board to cheerlead various issues. They tend to make many, very short posts, often just mindless repeats of slogans from the media, and I always report those.

If they are going to come onto ATS and propagandize, there is no need to make it easier for them.

I've noticed a disturbing increase in the amount of one-line posts. The majority of them are nonsensical replies that make up the "garbage" that clutters this site when one is trying to find intelligent replies within intelligent discussions. It seems like the majority of the posts come from new users that signed up within the past 6 months.

Do the mods need some help here or something? It's impossible to report every instance. Perhaps the rules need revision?

It's getting to be a pain in the arse.

getting to be a pain in the arse.

I have to agree with you,it is a pian to keep reading a bunch of people complaining on the ats as if the world revolves around them,it makes me sick.i mean, who really cares to come on here and see some one complaining about nothing, every day ,every week, every hour, every second......every other thread...GUH!!!

Instaed of making a thread with your lil tiny whining complaint ,why dont you send a pm or something to the mods, instaed of irratating threads like this .Do you really think every reply deserves a whole paragraph.
i think the mods do a good job,why dont you let the founders of this site decide on whats going to happen.

getting to be a pain in the arse.

Every other post you do is dealing with complaints, get real.

Spell Check

Lack of common sense/logic in posts

This is above top secret, not a complaint center,JESUS CHRIST.
I honestly think by looking at your threads, that the ats has nothing to do with this,or the one line posters ,i think the real problem is in the mirror.

I would much rather read something that clearly makes a point, in as few words as possible.

In quoting this post, I would like to pronounce my complete agreement with the author of said post in the hopes that others will be moved by consensus in the spirit of understanding and fellowship.

A system of rating like Slashdot would be ideal. Sadly, it would turn into the garbage pile that is the flagging and stars. But a rating system, voted by members, slashdot or digg style.

i post up something relevant, the next post gives me a +1.

Some dude posts a 1 line pointless response (well technically you should report them) but you could also vote their comment down. comments with a < 0 rating get closed (minimized, you have to actively click it for it to display, removing the clutter)

Just a thought, but like I said, if people can't grasp stars and flags, forget it.

If you have a problem with 1 line posts, my suggestion, click the report button, the mods are epic fast in their duties, but someone has to inform them of infractions, they can't monitor every post on the site at all times.

p.s. I'm still laughing at all the 1 line responses, specifically the page long blank post, EPIC WIN!
