How do you think that it got there? We obviously can't live without it, but do you think that it is possible that ET could have brought it here
because they knew Earth was the perfect spot to have life. Where the sunlight hits it just right to have living beings. Mars has evidence that life
used to be there, could Mars of been an Earth long ago? If the moon controls tides, and gives us gravity, H20 and so forth. Then how come you can't
breath and have gravity on other planets when they have moons. Lack of sunlight so it's to cold? Space is a mystery.
How did it get here? The prevailing theory by planetary physicists (and one that is supported by observations and simulations) is that it was the
result of an off-center collision (the most likely kind) between the Earth and a roughly Mars-sized planet some 4.5 billion years ago. The moon
coalesced out of the vaporized material cast off from the collision and formed originally quite close to the Earth and it has slowly been moving away
from the Earth ever since. Today the moon is at times close enough to the Earth and periodically well enough aligned with the Sun to produce a total
solar eclipse. Other times is is properly aligned but a little too far away from the Earth (toward its apogee) and Earth is a little too close to the
Sun (toward its perigee - note this has much less of an impact than the relative Moon distance) to form a total solar eclipse so we see an annular
eclipse instead. In around 600 million years from now the Moon will no longer appear large enough to form any total solar eclipses and instead any
observer existing on the Earth would only ever see annular eclipses and those would slowly reveal more and more of the Sun..
We don't (yet) have definitive evidence of life existing on Mars. Yes, there is plenty of evidence of liquid water existing on the surface and/or
just below it. But that does not mean that we know it to have had or to now have any kind of life. That said, it quite possibly did have some
primitive life (how primitive? Who knows?) and might even have some sort of sub-surface primitive life even now - but we simply have not yet found
actual evidence of it. I for one would be surprised (and very disappointed) if in the next 20 to 30 years we fail to find evidence for primitive
Martian life (past or present).
Yes, the Moon controls the tides. But it did not give us water and it certainly did not give us gravity. The mass of the Earth is so much larger and
the the Moon is far enough away that its gravitational influence is measurable but actually not very strong - at it's strongest it is a small part of
a percent of the affect we feel from the Earth itself.
And yes, the tidal and stabilizing effects of the Moon are important. But, it is also quite likely that without the Moon the Earth would still have
life. Conditions on the Earth would be substantially different and most like far less stable than they have been with such a large Moon. Complex
terrestrial and maybe even complex aquatic life might have had a very difficult time of it. Perhaps so much so that sentient beings capable of having
this discussion (as idiotic at times as it has become) might never have evolved. We of course don't know.
I very much doubt that some extra-terrestrial, highly evolved sentient beings with highly advanced technology brought the Moon from some unknown place
and put it in orbit around the Earth. In fact, I'd say that of all the theories and conjectures raised that one is the least likely. Well, not
really. Adding in the additional element of the Moon actually being some kind of hollow or substantially honeycombed (former?) spacecraft is even
more unlikely - actually, not the least bit likely.
Those who believe such ridiculous things are either out of touch with reality, unable to discern stories told by hoaxers, hucksters or science fiction
writers from reality due to their lack of education or intelligence or some combination of all of that.
Really, are you people actually that stupid and/or delusional?
