As a UFO contactee and mystic, I recommend that when you "bug out", if possible go to the nearest UFO hotspot / sacred site. Go with the mindset of a pilgrim on a sacred journey. Go with the realization that the physical journey, which is secondary, mirrors your inner spiritual journey which is primary. Go with the mindset of a monomyth hero journey.

The absolute most important survival gear is your brain and the skills you've acquired; everything else is just tools to make things easier.

People can't just read about something or purchase an item, and think they are ready: you got to try out that learning, and try out those items, practice it.

Take a weekend and get a friend to drop you off in the middle of nowhere with just your BOB. Get a taste of what it would be like, preferably when the weather is lousy such as a hard rain. Carry a cell phone just in case you get in over your head.

Practice for different scenarios too. When TSHTF, no one-size fits all response is going to be of much help, so plan for different events like radiological, biological, government round up, natural disasters of various types, societal breakdown, any thing you can think of.

I'd also say that numbers are important, say a squad-sized group you plan to coordinate with, not counting their dependents.

If you're threatened with a gang of thug-scavengers, eight or more well armed people on your team is better than being alone. A squad brings more firepower and more skills and helping hands to the table.

Also important if you go with the team idea is to decide ahead of time how decisions will be made affecting the entire group: will it be by vote? will you select a leader and second in command? It's better to nail this down BEFORE the shtf, because a lot of people might be in shock and not thinking clearly.

A note to the compound bow toting Rambo types:

your bows are useless after you run out of arrows...aluminum or carbon fiber.....if you have bow hunted you almost never get your arrow back, you almost never hit what you shoot at and.. I bet at least one of the fletchings on each of your arrows is light colored and easy to see....
In the real world situation Long bows wont cut the mustard till open trading takes place.

Shotgun people at the front of the thread...why so much slug ammo. If buck shot wont do it you are done. How about some reloading equipment and recycle your shells....you can put most anything in them.

Good thread...has me thinking... and more Rellevent every day

most simulated combat sinareos are decided in 200 rounds or less and most of the time a single magizine is never emptied..........GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY

that is a problem i faced the first two times lol. thanks for bringing that up. in rainy weather it is VITAL to dig an irrigation channel. this can also be very useful for collecting water to purify.

this is great advice, i have been doing exactly this for 8 years. just a weekend with just your BOB seems to take weeks. the most ive ever gone is 2 weeks on a survival hike through the ishi wilderness area.
