Besides, if radioactive clouds or radiation or caesium or whatever are serious, then how come none at dangerous levels have been reported?

None of you care about people living in the affected area who might read this and flip out. You only care about a short term ego boost you may get when ppl thank you for SPREADING THE WORD.
When these things you claim are going to happen never happen, none of you say sorry, you just move onto the next ego boost.

There should be a negative rating system on this site to stop fear mongering pricks posting nonsense. So when these END OF WORLD events don't happen, ppl can vote you pricks down to stop you moving onto your next ego boost.

Emotionally charged response but relevant IMO. The media does exactly the same thing with a few variations. Between the MSM and ATS all I get is total confusion on this subject as all info seems agenda driven (Stars and flags or economic damage control) I for one would love to find an unbiased source of information as I'm sure you would

There are many level-headed and educated people with the required background who can help you determine the truth of what is really happening in Japan.

These people usually post links to scientific or industry specific websites which have definite values and figures, or which collate these figures, or their post mentions them (the measurements and values) directly.

Usually I find that, without actual measurements, any theories or "news" is approximate or opinion.

When govenment spin is saying "all is well" but sites like New Scientist are saying "this is nearly as bad as Chernobyl", I know which one I will choose to believe.

Governments have a vested interest in keeping the wheels turning smoothly. The news services want some sensational entertainment. Science and Engineering sites and news are more interested in the actual situation/s.

Perhaps the best balance can be achieved by "denying ignorance" heeding all opinions and reports and then making you own decision rather than simply accepting what you are told.

Sir, you are at the wrong type of website if you're looking for the rose-colored version of worldwide opinion. I mean what do you expect at a conspiracy theory contrived website?
MSNBC may be pushing some positive puppy and bunny vibes for you.

Sorry for laying it on harshly. Needed to be said.

I wish you and all your countrymen well.

I hope these types of threads continue because we need to prepare for the worst so we can hope for the best.

What he expects is irrelevant, what he wants is for raving looneys that seem to frequent this site to stop posting the ill-informed, paranoid dribble usually associated with a catastrophe.

Naturally, this is the first site that everyone turns to for factual information as almost every member here is an expert on all aspects of science and physics.
Armed with a few Youtube videos and a Wikipedia degree in nuclear science they prattle off the real story of the current situation in Japan.

This site and most of it's members are a sad joke.

Thank you for the link. I'm not saying that it's not serious around the plant. i'm talking about people living in Tokyo. It seems like the intensity of this event is contained within a small radius. I'm not an expert in this area, and I don't know how far the contamination can affect, but what I know is that, no matter what experts say, what's most important is data. The casesium and iodine level in water and air are all at a safe level right now (around Tokyo and the more populated urban areas). I'm not saying that it won't get worse, but right now it seems to be okay.

Also, I am really open minded about things too, that's why I'm here. But just like how that earthquake specialist said that California would soon be getting an earthquake, I think even experts can be wrong sometimes

Also, I'm just saying maybe you're right, maybe you're wrong. I am not saying anyone should be scared to hear the truth. what we want is the true. That's exactly what we need. But nobody needs exaggeration now. Just like back in the days when SARS happened. Big deal. The media made a big deal out of it, businesses in Asia had to close down, stocks plummeted, and real estate crashed. And it ends up that only a handful of people actually died from it (8098 got sick, and 774 died)...a lot less than the number of people that just die from flus each year.

So, I'm not saying anyone is fear mongering, but what I'm saying is don't exaggerate. There are so many reliable sources everywhere that contradict each other. But I think ATS people like excitement, so whichever angle hints of danger is favored.

And again, if you can get a geiger counter to read a high level of radiation in Tokyo, then you have caught me by the tail my friend.

So then I suppose I should pay no attention to the overnight developments reported by CNN. Namely that a possible core breach in reactor #3 has indeed happened.

O.K.

Would you rather go back to the way it was when the Corporate owned news media told us what to think prior to other sources of data becoming available on the Internet or was that before your time? A few fear mongers aside it's still better than it was before YouTube, Wikipedia & ATS.

It was clear to me that the plant operator & the Japanese government were lying from the beginning. I may not be a nuclear physicist or understand precisely what's going on, but I've been around long enough to recognize when governments or corporate spokespersons are lying through the media.

I live 5000 thousand miles away on the Pacific coast of the U.S. and some of that radiation has reached us here. While it may not be a harmful dose , it is clear that this accident is far more serious than being reported. Tokyo water supply has become contaminated. At what point do the skeptics decided that nuclear accident is a disaster unto itself?

Nightline - Atomic Refugees

ABC's Nightline - MAYOR OF MINAMISOMA "On the day of the explosion the Provincial government urged him to downplay the disaster so as not to incite a panic." "We officially told the townspeople that the news about the explosion was a mistake, to stay in your homes you will be safe - It a lie he's been atoning for ever since"

It grows as time goes by.

LA Times - Japan expands nuclear plant's evacuation zone

Residents within 18 miles of the hobbled Fukushima plant are urged to leave; the previous limit had been 12 miles. The death toll from the massive quake and tsunami tops 10,000.

It is what is and we're all free to make our own informed opinions here at ATS.

If any of you paid attention you'd realize the situation is being resolved, power is being restored, and minimal amounts of radiation have spilled into the atmosphere. MINIMAL.

Oh wait, I forgot they're lying. Never trust a government! Always lies! Right? Yeah, well, prove it. Youtube videos don't prove anything, and neither did this topic.

Do some more fear mongering, the world needs it. Please.

Where have you been? On Monday of this week, I watched as Al Jazira reported that the International Atomic Energy Agency experts recorded radiation levels 1600 times higher than normal background at 11 locations upto a distance of 20 Kilometers from the stricken Fukushima plant. There are many references to this and more on the net....

In the town of Namie, at a point 20 kilometers northwest from the nuclear power plant, the data showed radiation levels of 161 microsieverts per hour as of 2:55 PM on Sunday

At 2:31 PM on Sunday, 83 microsieverts per hour was observed at an office of Ogaki Dam in the same town, 16 kilometers from the nuclear power plant

arkanoidlegent.blogspot.com...

“March 22, 2011 Japan’s radiation levels exceed normal limits by 1,600 times which is far more harmful than the media is reporting. The Nuke Zone is not just 30 miles from the plants it is hundreds of miles if the truth be told”

www.politicolnews.com...

Is this the fearmongering of which you speak?

PEACE,

if these radiation levels are true , then are there no reports of radiation sickness and thosuands being taken to hospitals with radiation sickness , or the dead already being brought into the hospitals to be identified.

1600 times normal level , that would kill you in a matter of minutes ?

I find it odd how some people on here are still downplaying the Fukushima nuclear disaster. I understand having an aversion towards people who spread fear, but at this moment reality is more than just alarming.
We have radiation leaks for almost two weeks, and it only gets worse.
I understand you want to ease peoples minds, but in this case it's naive to believe all is well.

Japan downplays fears of setback in nuclear crisis.

I don't know which English spoken media are still offering live coverage, but I'm still getting it in Dutch - this situation is outright terrible.
(Brief translation: "Two weeks after the tsunami: nothing solved, only more and more radiation.")
