Im another lurker who made an account to respond to this thread, seems quite popular, and it certainly struck a chord with me. I live in Southampton UK and I have heard something similar a few months ago. I was awoken around 2am by a roaring sound that seemed to be coming from above. It was loud enought to make me get out of bed and look out of all of the windows, and then to go into the garden to see what it was. It was a clear, still night and i sould see no signs of aircraft. The noise continued foraround 15 minutes before suddenly fading out. I live in the city and am used to night time noises from the roads, local airport and the docs, but this was completely unlike anything I have heard in 14 years of living here. No explainations from me, just adding more accounts to the thread.

And hi

Sorry for the total freak out during it, I was certain at the time it free to ....snip.....in their bathroom, but were commenting on facebook about it while it was happening, Saying oh my lord Tornado. But the news said No Tornado and Non expected. Anyway, Let me know if anyone comes up with something plausible. Thanks From Tallahassee

might be that the layer of air that refelcts the sound was broken when the lightning struck.
but still a very strange thing. I live in tallahassee, on and off, since 1960 and I never heard this. there is often a LOT of lightning here in this country around tallahassee.
spring hill road eh?
I used to be friends with a 1961 college student who lived there on that road, just before or after the turn to dog lake road. I often drove out, knew his family, had supper, good old country people.

hey!
the wakulla volcano!!

en.wikipedia.org...

The Wakulla Volcano was the name given to a prominent column of smoke, sometimes accompanied by bright light, seen coming from deep in the swamps of Wakulla County, Florida, from at least the Spanish occupation of Florida through 1886. The scientific assumption today is that the smoke came from a peat fire.[1]

The first accounts of the smoke come from Seminoles living nearby, and by the 1830s, white settlers attributed the sight to campfires from white or Indian settlements, pirates, renegades, or a volcano. Over the years a number of folkloric explanations were given, along with plausibly naturalistic ones such as deep-burning peat fires. Several teams of investigators set out to solve the mystery during the late 19th century; The Smithsonian Institution holds correspondence from A. W. Barber between 1890–1894 concerning his experience there. Sightings occurred as far away as 20 miles, and were reported throughout much of the 19th century, but the phenomenon may have been visible much earlier; it has even been suggested that Wakulla, which may mean "mist" or "misting", received its name from the strange smoke. A number of explanations have been given, most famously that an active volcano stood out in the swamplands, but no one was able to locate the smoke's source before it disappeared forever on August 31, 1886, the day of the Charleston earthquake. Although a number of people have claimed to have found the crater of origin, modern geologists are quite certain no volcano could exist in Florida.

from what I have read the currant idea is that this volcano was a natural gas vent, ignited by lightning, and that quake shut it off. but this is, I feel, NOT the explanation for this! the earth has been doing Things of late, things that portend a not nice future for many!

That is mysterios country there, that forest. 30 to 40 miles of Nothing but wilderness and I wonder that you could hide an elephant there or 300 Burmeae pythons, no one would notice.

my own guess, from my FSU weather school training, is that this was a rare atmospheric inversion where the sounds from all over were amplified and carried along. the layer was broken through at that lightning flash.
an "ordinary" explaination all right, but still the event is extra-ordinary, and there have been a LOT of these of late.
--or is it that people with their ever-present cams and phones, notice it more now.
I suspect there is far far more.....myself.

I was thinking of that Wakulla Volcano too! With all of the uptick in geological activity, it could restart. There were differing accounts though. Many people believe it was just smoldering peat in the swamps, but it is suspicious to me that it stopped right after a small earthquake. I think that lends credence to it being a real volcano. We also have a many sulfur springs in the area, and that is sometimes a sign of geological activity. We also do not have any bedrock to speak of, just the gigantic limestone aquifer. It wouldn't take much for magma to punch through.

Hi everyone, I am the original filmer of this video. Sorry for the total freak out during it, I was certain at the time it was a tornado which is why My kids ended up in the bathtub with a mattress over them, and for those who are asking why I didn't go out and investigate, Again, I thought it might be a tornado, I have 4 small children, and I am responsible for them and their safety, I am not going to gal-avant around looking for God knows what, Plus it was freaking scary at the moment. Location: Tallahassee Florida. Yes I do live 4 miles south of the airport. Lived here for 20 years and never heard anything like it. I will mention a few things for everyone to keep in mind. 1). This sound was reported to be heard and felt extremely far south of me as well, I think the woodville and crawfordville areas which is about 15 to 20 miles away. Which would put those people 25 miles or more from the airport. 2). There were many calls that went to 911. 3). it made the news with the explanation of "Ducting" Thunder. 4). I called the Airport and talked to a director there, They said there were no planes being tested, only a fedex plane took off. They also asked me to send them a copy of the Video!.. 5). I dont know weather this is related or not, But the weather on the 8th (the night before) reported "Military Chaff" during the news. I have to admit, I knew nothing of Haarp, Chemtrails, or anything, My uncle told me to do a google search on that a day or so after the event. Honestly, I wish it were a plane. Tallahassee is a very small town, we have a tiny airport, and there are no other facilities of that type anywhere around here, We live in the forest pretty much, I have recently (Since I posted the video to get some answers) been called redneck, hillbilly and everything else you can think of, which doesn't bother me at all, Maybe I am, But nevertheless, I am not satisfied with the answers we got from the "Weather man" here. and the airport confirmed no planes doing that. If you have any specific questions, feel free to let me know, I will try to recall as much as I can. I do know that some of my friends about 20 miles away all locked themselves in their bathroom, but were commenting on facebook about it while it was happening, Saying oh my lord Tornado. But the news said No Tornado and Non expected. Anyway, Let me know if anyone comes up with something plausible. Thanks From Tallahassee

Welcome to ATS Daisy! It's awesome to have the person who actually took the video to join the discussion. I have just read the entire thread... That took awhile! I am not even remotely convinced this was a rocket or jet. Last I knew rockets did not hover for twenty minutes. Out of all the links provided by various folks, the sound that sounded the closest was actually a link given from the earthquake in Japan. There is obviously ALOT of energy being released. As for the light flash at the end not occurring simultaneously with the noise ended, it might be important to note that the speed of light is quicker than the speed of sound. And if you take into account the time lapse between the two I'm guessing there would be a correlation but that is another post. Have you ever experienced this before for any length of time? And how long have you lived in that location? Thanks, Strangefires

Hi There,
I know lots of people felt and heard it, But for some reason they were all south and south east of the airport, No one heard it that was up next to or in the north areas of the airport. The Gas station people on Cap Cir going toward 319 never heard it and they are a lot closer to the airport than i am. But in any event, Lots of calls were coming into the airport as well, thats why they looked into it.. But still nothing, That is also why the news chalked it up to "Ducting" and Thunder.. Who knows! I sure hope nothing is going on with the springs!!! It about to be Canoe season!! And I love to see the manatees at the river

Hello. Please READ this as I made an account on this site just to post on my first hand account of this event.

I found this site by doing a google search of "Loud Noise in Clearwater Florida" because at 4 am march 20th I was awoke by this EXACT noise in Clearwater, Florida. In fact when I opened the video link my girlfriend looked right at me from across the room and in the kitchen and said "thats that noise!"

Clearwater is just west of Tampa, Florida and only around 20 miles from Macdill Air Force Base. Me and my girl friend were both witness to this extremely loud noise. However, it was not a constant 20 minutes as claimed by the OP in my experience. The noise first came across the sky and it definetely had the distinction of "moving" through the sky similiar to a fighter. I assumed it was just Macdill Jet traffic, however it is extremely un-usual to have noises like this. I have lived in the bay area for 25 years and have never heard any noises like this. In fact Macdill goes largely un-noticed in the bay area. Even in St pete where it is only a few miles from the run ways departure and arrival paths.

The noise lasted for about 2-4 minutes or so each time. and probably appeared around 5 or so times in a time period of about an hour.

I would have just shrugged it off as no big deal, but what was VERY strange was how the noise dissipated. The loud rumbling did not fade away as would a jet fighter moving through the sky, but rather at its peak loud point simply STOPPED. I mean like someone turning off a TV stop. It was really strange. I thought maybe some kind of stealth aircraft or something? I have never heard a plane moving through the sky simply become dead quiet in a matter of seconds. It was very strange. I even walked outside my home and looked up to the sky trying to see something. It was a dark night though and I could'nt see anything unusual in the sky other then the extremely loud rumbling noise.

I hope to learn what this was because it was really strange. My first thinking was something militarily tied to the Lybian offensive, but what enabled these noises to simply stop in mid rumble? So strange

That is a scary thought! (earthquake).. I have been here in the same spot for 20 years.. Never ever heard anything like this before.. I just can't even stress enough the fact that we hear Jets and carriers and commercial airplanes, private airplanes, Just about all types on a daily basis, and we attend alot of events at the airport as well.. I have actually been about 30 feet from the fedex jet when it fires up.. it doesn't sound like that at all.. But If it were a Plane of some kind, There would have still had to be some crazy phenomena in the atmosphere to cause that kind of sound resonance from it..

Wow! Thanks for the account, there seems to be an awful lot of ATS members that have witnessed this same anomaly throughout the world. It will be interesting to see how many more recordings of this sound will turn up in the near future...

After reading your post and watching the video, I found myself returning several times. I couldn't figure out what it was or what was so intriguing about the video.www.youtube.com... This video, which could easily be considered a fake, SUDDENLY reminded me of watching something similar awhile back. The video was posted Oct 13/2010 Notice the strobing light in the sky, in both videos. How about the double flash at 1:41min, then the single flash at 2:16min, each video has a double and a single flash of light. Or the same sounds, harmonics, and vibrations. There are too many similarities, separated by great distance. I am doubtful that they're fakes. Something is happening, manipulating the properties of sound[

Hey Daisy, thanks for responding so fast! You mentioned feeling sick in the video. Did you feel as though the vibration was making you ill, or was it the panic and fear for your family? I for one understand why you did not want to "investigate" and unless the person was in that situation it would be easy for them to say they would have gone out further to find the source of the sound. I am grateful you had the nerve to video tape the experience. How many flashes of light did you see? And in your opinion was the last flash in the video lightning? Thanks again, Strangefires

Hmm, I think this could also be it:

It's the space shuttle doing an engine test. Sounds nearly identical. Take away some of the high frequency to compensate for the distance of her camera versus this camera, and bingo.

Now the question would be: how could this be the space shuttle?

Maybe they were testing some engines used on it?

Maybe the vibrations excited resonance in the massive cave networks below Tallahassee?

I don't know, but the low frequency is there in this video, for sure.

South Florida here, and I heard a rumbling noise on more than one occassion over the past week that sounds eerily similar to the video. I honestly thought it was constuction though now that I think on it more, the last time I recall hearing it was Saturday night and it was after 8pm so I can rule out construction.

will keep my ears open now that I'm aware this could be something "wierd"

@daisyjays78

If you thought it was a tornado then why did you grab your camera?I admire your bravery though.

When I was watching the video it seemed like it was right there but invisible? It sounded louder then anything I ever heard.

You were looking up in the sky is that because that's where the noise was coming from? And is it all forest where you were recording?

Do you think it could have been a ship of some sort?

Thanks for sharing this with us!

These people said they live just a few miles from the airport I believe. I live just a few miles from our air base, and when a larger aircraft is waiting for clearance, and the conditions are just right, (weather, wind, etc) a magnification of the engine noise can make it seem like they are right in the front yard. It's not anything so mysterious. SO, my guess a large aircraft was waiting in the qeue for clearance and the engine noise was magnified by the weather conditions. People are so on edge right now,and any little thing seems to be strange event. .

OK....now THATsounded IDENTICAL! That is scary stuff since we have started having small but numerous earthquakes here in the south (Louisiana, Alabama, Florida. Arkansas and Texas.....within the past year, and most of them happened just in the last few months) Earthquakes are uncommon here to say the least.

I think it was just panic sickness, the gut twisting feeling.
I saw three flashes all together, Two earlier on, and then the last one. I didnt see any actually lightening bolts or anything like that, Nor was there the thunder associated with a lightening bolt. i wish i would have been a little braver
but can't go back and undo that..
