I said hoax, or broken compasses, or incorrect compass usage.

See, this is what happens when other posters just want to talk smack and ignore other points made.

I never try to argue with an ATS Staff member, but I'm afraid your statement of "Magnetic north is still where it should be" is completely inaccurate. The USGS and NASA have released articles that counter that claim. Here is the link showing NASA's finding along with the USGS Studies.

Earths Inconsistant Magnetic Field

Magnetic North is on the move, as NASA has proven.

Excerpt from the article:

Scientists have long known that the magnetic pole moves. James Ross located the pole for the first time in 1831 after an exhausting arctic journey during which his ship got stuck in the ice for four years. No one returned until the next century. In 1904, Roald Amundsen found the pole again and discovered that it had moved--at least 50 km since the days of Ross.

Could it be because of the North magnetic pole heading to Russia?

news.nationalgeographic.com...

I read that a long time ago, I'm sure it has it's effects.

North magnestic pole is " officially " shifted slowly to the Russia Siberia aka " East " !

Very interesting stuff indeed...

My android compass app is pointing to magnetic north as 15-20 degrees East of where North would normally be pointing...

Bay Area, CA here.

Same thing for me, granted I'm checking a crappy keychain compass, but it's definitely pointing NE. I'm In south San Francisco

Edit: The keyring was removed before observing where north supposedly is. No metallic objects present

I live in Ohio, USA.
Just compared my iPhone Compass App and two physical compasses, all are pointing in the normal direction.

I did mine outside. I can see the sun, have lived here for long enough to know the directions. To say I don't know what I am doing is an insult. Perhaps you could come here and show me how to do it properly...I used a compass and a magnetized needle in a dish of water.

1) That's old news now.

2) That is a SLIGHT change of a degree or two, and expected
(compasses would still point to magnetic north.)

3) What you are claiming would mean a 90 degree shift in the poles.
(that's more than a degree or two)

While I agree with you, and that the power lines and metal can cause a problem, what about some of the posters who were out in the wilderness when this occurs? Or those who have a fixed compass inside the house that may already be compensated for this metal/power line/transformer pull?

It's Just hit me what's going on here!

A mass of people have just woken up and realised that there is in fact a difference between Longitudinal North and Magnetic North!!!!!

But fact remains there always has been and there always will be!

If this is true, then please take some map and compass lessons, or you're always going to be getting lost!!!!

As I said, get some old detailed maps (Like the OS) and compare the Mag North Offset with recent ones and what they say it is now. ONLY that will give you the true offset (I bet it's 1 Deg as Runway designations that were 24 are now 23)

Okay, then in North America your compass would start pointing WEST if this was the cause.

Nice try though.

Do people who TRY to discredited ATS forums as a hobby, not read any credited sources provided in any replies? Apparently not. Again, maybe these people can't believe what real Scientists say either. Magnetic north IS moving at varying speeds per year, and IS noticeable with average compasses.....click the NASA article just to confirm what I post. Doesn't matter when that article was published. Its proven, by people with real Degrees. Wheres yours?

HAHAHA!!!

I don't use my compass alot, but I did 3 years ago when we bought our new home and it had a balcony to the south.
For the fun of it I checked with a compass to see if it was exactly south and it turned out it was.
I haven't used a compass since but when I read this thread I downloaded and turned on a free compass android app on my smartphone (couldn't find my real compass at the moment) and went to see if it was still exactly south.

To my astonishment it was now slighly south-south west!
And when I turned the other way facing north it was slightly north-north west.
You others here say your north is slightly to the east.
I don't know what to make of this.
Maybe bad app, maybe you are on to something.
I am in Sweden, Europe by the way.

Hey dude, I'm in the UK, I have exactly the same thing, north is probably 15 degrees west than what it is actually, and south is also further west, maybe by 5 or 10 degrees. I also used an android app called Compass with a blue logo :/ no real compass

Listen folks...magnetic north varies. It meanders. Every year.
When you read something on a website from NASA or somewhere else that says that magnetic north has moved towards Russia 50kms this year, it sounds like a big deal. It really isn't. Happens year in and year out.

Now, if you form a triangle between your house, the north pole, and the current location of magnetic north, you will notice that the DEGREES in which it has moved is miniscule. Unless of course you live up in the arctic circle. Then the variation can be considerable. North America, for instance, will be somewhere between 7 and 11 degrees, depending on your latitude.

This is certainly a far cry from saying that north is now DUE EAST. That is 90 degrees out of phase and is absurd. It simply isn't true.

Thanks for your consideration.

The whole idea is rubbish. Without (relative) stable poles we would be roasted by the sun wind within seconds. And as you can see here, all is normal.

How can so much people believe such things?! Remembers me to the "Australia is out of place" Thread here: www.abovetopsecret.com...

Please people, try to think. I see far too much absolute silly stuff on ATS.

Yes, but all the emphasis was put on hoax. Seriously, what is this lame amateur debunking? Go check some good debunkers, your technique really is not on top of the game.

Oh can you tell me why debunkers are almost always arrogant and not sympathic? Can't they be nice people too? Or is it part of the discrediting theory?

Heres a thought. Those few of you trying to discredit all the claims in this thread, possibly just because you can't wrap your head around the details involved with it ....go learn how to read a compass, experiment yourself, then do it a few more times....then come back and rejoin the collaborative research taking place in this thread.

Here's a thought. Those few of you trying to prove hundreds of thousands or millions of compasses wrong, with your one single compass should wrap your head around the concept of statistics.

I learned how to read a compass, which is why I know you are wrong. Also, planes aren't crashing everywhere from fuel loss, due to being lost.

You can shine up that turd all you want and call it "collaborative research", but it doesn't change the fact that magnetic north is still pretty much where it always has been, and that you and this whole group is not correct.

Otherwise, your snide remarks are automatically discredited, and add nothing but pure ignorance and immaturity to this thread.

What snide remarks?
I've been straight-up about what I think of your claim and this thread.
Do you even know what snide means? Your usage would suggest you do not.

You discredited yourself, when you decided that your handful of compasses were right, and hundreds of thousands/millions of compasses world-wide are wrong.

Ignorance and immaturity is calling someone snide, when they are straightforward.

If you can't stand people calling you out on your claim, then don't make claims. This isn't Hello Kitty: Island Adventure where everyone plays nice and agrees with each other, it's ATS where controversial subjects get discussed.
