Are you going off of the richter scale or the newer moment magintude scale? Only asking because i just found a chart stating 2.00 EJ for the japan earthquake.

So a earthquake measuring 6.0 is 10x more powerful than a earthquake registering 5.0 and one registering 7.0 is 100x more powerful (than 5.0). The japanese earthquake was 9.0 (10,000x more powerful than a 5.0 quake) thats in the region of 470 megatons of TNT equivalent. The largest Thermonuclear weapon ever tested was only 50 megatons, just mentioned for comparison

We just have to remember that we are talking about geological timescales when talking about earthquakes. I know that mother nature has produced a lot more massive energy releasing earthquakes in the past during one event. We only discovered how to explain and measure this amazing phenomenon about 100 years or so ago. Ive studied geophysics at university and now am geologist in Australia. I still feel we need to know that she has got a lot more power than we have seen in recent times. All we need is technology to mitigate disasters like what we are witnessing today.

thought it might be that one.
I used the Ms reading for it (off the phase data, at the top of the page) , so its in the 2011 table for me anyway.
I can't see how anyone can get any decent stats tabulated when they (usgs) chop and change what kind of magnitude types they post for each event.
Anyway it doesn't change the energy numbers does it, that quake being in the 6 - 6.9 category

I see that USGS have changed the magnitude on this "6.8" (my 7.8Ms) to 7.9Mw

earthquake.usgs.gov...

the phase data page has changed too, now they don't give the Ms or ML reading

This may alter your energy figures Puterman

I use energy released rather than magnitudes, but yes these are based on Mw

Remember this is only a quick calculation. My final analysis will come at the end of the year.

chart stating 2.00 EJ for the japan earthquake

That is correct. 1995 Petajoules, which rounded is 2 Exajoules.

I just noticed that the values are correct on my last graphic but in the wrong slot. Here is the corrected version.

Well thats strange.

I can't find it now either.
Currently on the cusp of 7-8 days from the 9.0 quake, so nothing showing between the 9.0 on the 8-30 day list and the 5.7 2011/03/11 18:11:24 37.118 142.160 13.8 OFF THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN on the 7 days list

I'm assuming it will show up on the 8-30 day list within the next 4 hrs

Would you believe it. That 6.8 that you had as a 7.8 has been upgraded to a 7.9.

Looks as if it started as a 7.9, then was dropped to 6.8 and then they upgraded back to 7.9 without changing the version number - still C.

This change + the quakes that have happened since I last did the figures, has mad quite a difference:

does anyone have an update as to how we are standing now for total energy release?

seems to be we should be getting up there with these recent quakes.
