What are peoples thoughts on these 2 recent quakes on the west coast of Japan, I imagine the depth (1 km ~ 0.6 mile) is a cause for concern.

They're not extremely common right there but they are not unknown. You can check out the historical siesmicity maps on this page on USGS.

I doubt very much that the event there relates to what happened in Japan. It's on a different fault and also was relatively small in terms of energy release.

I'm worried about that - I feel lied to all morning.

Lt. Gen Russel L. Honore (ret) just said on CNN that this will probably be the largest naval operation since Vietnam, but of course for a lot more honorable of a purpose.

He is experienced with this kind of stuff from coordinating relief efforts during the hurricane Katrina disaster. I guess hes the guy we are choosing to advise relief efforts in Japan, good choice?

It is currently 20:35 UTC time, which means that quake hit almost an hour ago. I am watching GEE as we speak and have been all morning. There have been at least 3 pretty good sized EQ's that have hit since that last 6.6, so watch for them on USGS to pop up in the next hour or so. USGS seems to be behind with posting these today understandably with everything going on.

On a side note: Anyone else noticing the time discrepancies on RSOE under the EQ listings, or am I reading it wrong, they have the time for the Hawaii earthquake listed as 20:51 UTC and it isn't even 20:40 yet?
