Any idea how long the residents of say, Sendai or other towns/cities on the japanese coast
would have had to evacuate? was there any warning at all?

The anxiety and anticipation in hawaii painted a picture of impending destruction, but imagine the
how terrifying it must be to be caught almost off-guard

And now it starts getting bad ........

BBC are quoting the Jiji Press Agency as reportiung between 200 and 300 bodies found on a beach in Sendai.

Also reports of a major explosion at a petrochemical complex

Edit: also a passenger train unaccounted for.....
edit on 11-3-2011 by Essan because: add comment

This is what I heard, about the train being unaccounted for.

And I have to say, I watched the footage of the petrochemical explosion and it looked to be absolutely huge!! Like a fireball from a mini nuke, the heat practically whited out the whole camera view.

Just unbelievable!

No it wouldn't.

It's been shut down. This is not another Chernobyl.

If the rods overheat it will still melt down. They need constant cool water flowing to cool them, thats why most are on the banks of rivers.

Not much yet. Sky News just reported there are around a million people living in the immediate vicinity.

West Coast of the USA not the East Coast. East Coast had flooding due to rain, not tsunami related.

So poisoning the water supply= minimal damage???... it will magnify the situation that was my point from the beginning. You talk like i said EXPLOSION OF GREAT LENGTHS!!!!! when this is not the case so be quiet.

It appears the worst is over.
Thank you to all the ATSers who shared this time with me.
It is heading for 2am here so I'm off for some much needed rest.
To those still awaiting the waves, my thoughts are with you, though it does seem that it is settling down in its force now.
Goodnight ATSers, keep safe... see you all again safe and well in a few hours.

My heart goes out to everyone in the area (many countries are issuing tsunami warnings now)! CNN is now reporting that the yen is now plummeting in response to the quake - coward investors ship out when the country is in need, typical! I wish there is something I could do to help. For now, all I can do is watch...

This disaster will sure legitimize earthquake preparedness programs... FEMA's upcoming event comes to mind... The pictures on CNN are showing people in Japan standing around looking shocked and confused during the aftershocks - it sure lends credence to the fact that no matter how prepared you think you might be, actually experiencing a disaster is a whole different ballgame.

Don't worry, they'll buy it back up low after the selloff. You can bet your bottom dollar Soros would do that to American currency. Oh wait, he did that already!

I know you people will think I am another loonatic writing but: 1 week ago I received a thought in my mind. I have many thoughts and ideas in my mind everyday and this was one of them. I think it came from my imagination.

Thought/thing that crossed my mind was: what if one of the largest ever quakes were to hit Japan soon. Would the japanese think it is a real quake or part of a weapon test made by U.S.A. Will this deteriorate Usa-Japan relationships or is their relationship "bulletproof".

"I wonder what would it be, if this quake would happen..."

forward to today:
Now I just watched the news, CNN says: "MASSIVE QUAKE HITS JAPAN" on their front page and im like wtf.

has anyone else had a thought in your head in the last few weeks about a massive earthquake hitting japan?

Because I surely did.
edit on 11-3-2011 by kankkura because: (no reason given)

Im almost feeling guilty about thinking those thoughts...but my rationality tells me my thoughts cannot create such quakes. Only a megalomaniac would think his thoughts created an earthquake and im not a megalomaniac..
