Good afternoon ATSers/ites/ians. And now, my first thread. :-P

Good news for you drug lovers! You can save yourself a lot of money by pwning faces on your favorite FPS instead of running off to the inner city (or your neighbor) to buy an eight ball!

Think I am wrong? Well UK based psychotherapist Steve Pope thinks you are in denial.
It's okay, the first step is admitting you have a problem.
techland.time.com... aine/

My nose isn't running right now, and not from any drugs. I'm allergic to heavy amounts of bull#.

In all seriousness, I have met people who have both snorted coc aine and played videogames.
I know a guy who did both at once, in fact. Two very different experiences, although when combined I hear it can lead to a 50 kill, 0 death streak in any online shooter.

I'll just tell you, there is nowhere near the dopamine release associated with coc aine attributed to videogames.

Also, 2 hours for one line's equivalent? The drug's peak effects last 15-30 minutes, so I'm having trouble with the math on that statement.

If anyone can find the BBC Radio link that the story cites as the source, let me know so I can get it up here!

EDIT: I also noticed how similar the phrases "one line" and "online" are...discuss? :-P

Maybe FPS games. As an MMO player, I suspect that 2 hours of WoW is closer to a weak batch of heroin than anything. Never done the stuff, wouldn't know, but it's definitely not anywhere similar to coke

I've definitely seen the MMO players all zombified, only moving their wrists and mouths.

Blinking is optional.

As far as addictive properties I say it's probably on par.

Being a video game junkie doesn't usually end up with spending all your cash on drugs then resorting to petty theft and finally prostitution. Cocaine is serious stuff.

It could.

At least once a month there's a story about some kid beating another kid to death for a game or a kid shooting his mom in the face because she took away his Xbox.

Anyone in the know could tell you that this is rubbish, I smoked crick and shot heron for 8 years and can vouch that video games are a piss poor substitute. Now, for someone who never did drugs, I guess there could be some addicition issues.

Are you clean of your addictions? not that it is my place to ask..And please feel free not to answer..I just like to hear about people finding inner peace and overcoming addiction..makes me feel better about the world we live in today..

Psycho-Therapist. Not psychiatrist.

This guy MAY know the mind, but clearly nothing about its chemistry.

Playing all night is definitely a clear sign of a serious addiction. I hope your oldest is older (18+).

I think some of the issues, like a kid beating another kid to death over a videogame, they have many more factors than just the game coming together to result in that craziness.

I will say if I like a game I can play it too much, but I don't feel the same mental/physical pull of chemical dependency.

A lot of that has to do with your own focus and discipline IMO.

He is 21 and does this about twice a year when he comes home to my place and has all his high school buddies show up.
He actually has a job working nights, 6 days a week. Sorry, just being a smart***.

The statement "a line of coc aine" is misleading as "quality shoes". For both coc aine and shoes there are low quality, medium quality, and best quality. Most people never even see the best quality footwear money can buy, that is for the elite wealthy. Most people never get to snort 98% pure either. A dose the size of a match head would blow off the back off your head, effect-ways, at that rate of purity.

Besides, why buy an eight ball when the crack is readily available for cheap.

Maybe check out the website www.wowdetox.com...

It has 52000 + posts, most of them are confessions of world of war craft addicts.
i have seen the site posted on ATS before and was reading the posts there one evening.
And it is a real eye opener of how serious this addiction can be.

It was also in the news fairly recently in the news that playing video games releases the same amount of dopamine as a good hit of heroine i believe.
Dont have a link for this do.

I really wouldn't use "addiction" with video games. I would say some people become obsessed with them, but definetly not addicted. I was guilty of it myself for a long time with WoW, but eventually my friends and I played less and less and eventually got to the point where we don't play anymore. I've never heard of a drug addiction that simply fades like that.

I do not believe 2 hours of video games is equal to a line of coke. Many years ago I had my problems. I still play FPS on the ps3 often. Sometimes I have sat down for a good 4 to 5 hrs. I would say at the right moment a FPS would give you a sort of "high" but nothing more than if you would just go out and succeed at something.
