Just posted this in a post on an ubuntu forum..
and figured it would be good to put here as well.

Someone asking

Viruses on linux?
how much of a problem are viruses on ubuntu?
how rare are they I mean?

and I~

Re: Viruses on linux?
Lets just say Ive been using nothing but Ubuntu for a bit over a full year..
with no "virus protection" whatsoever..
and have not had a single issue yet. lol

Most windows users i know..
Can have a brand new, fresh windows install..(with virus protection)
and be compromised (have viruses) within a week, if not a couple days. lol

Be smart.

I don't have the link handy and I am too lazy to look for it at the moment but it is a violation.

I am guessing its because ads are how ATS makes its money and if the are blocked then they get less money? Or something like that.

Many times a virus or infection will notshow it's self immediately so the infected user does not know where the infection came from.

Or... no comment because I've been busy and this is the first I've seen this thread?

There's no such thing as an "ATS Virus."

We do more to protect our users, as much as possible, than websites much larger than us. A third party scanning service tests all ads from all ad networks appearing on ATS for malicious activity, including full-page redirects. There are currently no alerts in their system for the past 72 hours.

This activity most likely came from a source other than our ad networks, and most certainly was not the result of any action of ours.

There are several ways that and similar browser takeovers can occur:
- virus/malware received via email
- dormant virus/malware waiting for specific action
- background process via another window/tab in your browser
- background process from undetected malware

Unfounded speculation about our ethics, and whether or not we (ATS) would purposefully do this to our users is off-base and insulting.

No I agree, They do do a great job for the most part. Some of the stuff we get warnings about regarding some threads like someone comes on and attacks you then you respond and then you get a warning its like oh come on guys. Some of the stuff I have read on here cracks me up also.

I know for a fact that the gov is on this site. With or without permission is another thing. I suspect the only one who could but would not comment would be Mr Gray. As he is the only one in the know well mebay 3 people but any hoot.

They are here and they are active that is all I can say.

about a month or so ago, there was a real chintzy looking ad on here, think it was the one that said "congratulations, you won!". anyway it would go in a re-load loop (click, click, click, click,etc..), eventually I got a real pain in the arse virus. can't say for sure if it came from that ad though.

Sorry i'm sure your busy no doubt this is a very busy site

There's no such thing as an "ATS Virus."

Well I guess that that statement is true.

Are you tring to tell me this site has never had a virus lurking in the source code. Sorry to inform you that the us gov has this site pegged as one of there targets.

We do more to protect our users, as much as possible, than websites much larger than us. A third party scanning service tests all ads from all ad networks appearing on ATS for malicious activity, including full-page redirects. There are currently no alerts in their system for the past 72 hours.

I beleive that to be a true statement.

Are you telling me that you could not embed a virus and sent it to me U2U as an admin. I beg to differ...

There are several ways that and similar browser takeovers can occur:
- virus/malware received via email Didn't get it here
- dormant virus/malware waiting for specific action Didn't get it here either
- background process via another window/tab in your browser Nope not here either
- background process from undetected malware Just and intrusion detected and breached. This was an attacking system launching an attack to try to search/run encryption

Unfounded speculation about our ethics, No not unfounded. speculation. I just had an attack from a U2U message not trying to spin any thing here mate. Benn on theis site lurking since 9-11 member for a while now. Never had an attack like that happen to that extent anyway.

and whether or not we (ATS) would purposefully do this to our users is off-base and insulting.

I highly suspect it has nothing to do with the ATS faculty but more or less a unidentified lurking member with control way above you or my level.

Sorry not accusing you but you have no idea who has the ability to walk all over your source code undetected. By the way do you have an contractor you use to add and modify code on your system or is it all done inhouse?

You know Jesse it may not be them but someone lurking in there server looking for certian target. I feel I may be a target for some of the stuff I may have been talking about.

Specifically defense related but all public rekleased knowledge.

I would never step over as I know the line and it is very fine.

State secrets act is no joke.

Wow this is getting interesting.

Skeptic

What gives with this crap. Are you kidding me. Please tell me what it was that what was said which made me get this warning. Or are you gonna pull it as an off topic post..

Not for nothing but I love this site and sometimes the truth hurts when it comes to your baby but come on.

I was the victim here and now I feel victimized and I'm being punished for saying I just got was attacked.

Please help me out here as I know you are waiting for me to respond as you know smoke is coming out my ears with frustration as I am still trying to recover from this malware attack.

Have a little simpathy will ya.

Rocky Black

Are you kidding me what is with the warning double wearning to boot. You know this is very unfair that your punishing me for nothing. What, bringing up that I had an attack on my computer. I think your power may have writting warnings for things which are not warning worthy.

Feeling a little like a victim.

Sit in my shoes and look through my glasses you would fell like the victim as well.

Just saying.

Some may want to consider looking into using a Linux program that runs in RAM (boot with a flash drive) for a bit more peace of mind. I realize it doesn't solve the bigger problem here, but if this issue is getting worse for ya, perhaps it's a happy-medium... At the least, it's another option.

Examples of such distros are:
Puppy Linux
MacPuppy (think there are 4-5 different versions)

*DSL (on the older side, still viable)
*LPS (created by the Air Force, this may turn some off)

just to add onto that ,i believe using linux ubuntu Gnome or linkux ubuntu X. are also good "systems" to run with

Hope this helps, sorry for those people who may have got any type of virus, it was obviously unintentional and would not be condoned by the site Staff and admin. Hope you find the cause and solve any issues quickly and efficiently : )

Peace

Yep.....happened to me today....it was a fake windows security alert listing about 8 viruses that had supposedly infected my computer. Luckily, I knew it was fake, and did not click it.....I just shut down, started back up and ran my antivirus and malwarebytes to make sure it wasn't there. If you get one of those windows security alerts DO NOT click on it. It looks EXACTLY like the real thing but it's a trick! If you click on it, it will infect your computer....
