Is Zombie Creation Possible?

freemarketmojo.com

Popular Science reports on scientific feasibility of zombie creation:

An effective agent would target, and shut down, specific parts of the brain, says Steven C. Schlozman, an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard University...

...The most likely culprit for this partially deteriorated brain situation, according to Schlozman, is as simple as a protein. Specifically, a proteinaceous infectious particle, a prion.

Prions are just proteins that become infectious by changing their shape, not their chemistry. The currently recognized prion diseases like Mad Cow disease all travel through the body to infect the brain. Prion diseases are incurable and eventually fatal, but before they kill, they shut down the brain cell-by-cell, tissue-by-tissue and lobe-by-lobe.

According to Schlozman, a prion that targets the frontal lobe and cerebellum could be attached to a virus - and let loose.

...although the walking dead have some of their motor skills intact—walking, of course, but also the ripping and tearing necessary to devour human flesh—the frontal lobe, which is responsible for morality, planning, and inhibiting impulsive actions (like taking a bite out of someone), is nonexistent. The cerebellum, which controls coordination, is probably still there but not fully functional.

Prions can hitchhike on viruses, bacteria, flies and just about anything.

Anyone familiar with my old work here knows that I suspect this already has been tried - which explains the current pandemic of dementia and Alzheimers, if not the chronic disease pandemic.

But there you have it. Prions could be bio-engineered to create zombies. What a thought.

Hmmm, interesting.

However, if it makes you feel any better don't worry about it too much.

Man, how I love Cracked.com. Always good for a laugh (as well as a profound thought).

Cheers!

P.S. - Just watched "Zombieland" for about the tenth time last night. Therefore you struck a chord with me.

I LOVE cracked.com - thanks for that link.

fyi - I assume I'm infected along with the rest of humanity, but I'm not worried. I experiment on myself to find more effective home treatments and cures (insurance never covers anything worth getting and the good stuff costs WAY too much). Very soon I'll be writing a self-help book for zombie-prion sufferers. Once I make my millions I'll be able to afford the cures that work just like the rest of the Big Guyz.

prions need to be weaponized and they do exist from nano tech take a few virus's and yes you could make a zombie virus, rabies with mad cow, lyme, and problity a few others. They can also swap chactors

Anyone who has had an infection of teenageoscolopous knows about the zombie problem. It's usually brought on after a night long dosage of gamingdoritoinium. This usually happens during a period of collegeilinium. You usually notice it when you are in your late 40's. Includes draining feeling in the bank account followed by hour long showers. Can be seen in the company of girlfriendscoliosus which you should avoid noticing at all costs unless you have been trained in torture. You should avoid this at all costs, however wifenaggingtopous will "waggle" until you comply, thus the creation of the zombie.

Just more evidence that Popular Science is nothing more than entertainment.

They must be trying to steal away the readership of MAD magazine. Looks like they're doing a pretty good job at it.

Not entertainment - managed disclosure, and a prelude to justifying ruthless Eugenics Policies. Dementia used to be called senility - victims lose their memory, control of their bodies, and abilities to think and feel - now, it's epidemic, striking younger and younger people every year. ...Dementia results from a variety of diseases - most of which are now recognized as being caused by infectious prions or other mis-folded proteins.

Dementia Epidemic: 65 Million by the Year 2030

A Canadian trusts and estate attorney, Megan F. Connolly, identified an alarming statistic in her blog from Alzheimer's Disease International: An estimated 35.6-million people worldwide suffer from dementia and by 2030, the number is expected to double to more than 65.7-million.

haha, that's agreeable.

Seriously, there's been much better zombie theories out there for many years. Considering the potential benefit of unleashing zombies upon an enemy population, I don't doubt that some zombie weapon is out there somewhere.

Hell, zombies can be produced from modified rabies, Ebola, parasites, even mushroom spores.

Thanks for your comments Dmitri, but I have to ask - Did you even read this post?

...There already IS a "Zombie Epidemic" - it's just called the Dementia Epidemic.

Prion diseases do not seem to be highly contagious, but they certainly are infectious. Long-known vectors include surgical instruments, food products, milk and blood products - but industry would lose too much profit if the information were officially acknowledged. So the government-corporate partnership does not recognize these vectors, and preventive action has not been taken.

Now, because prions DO evolve, and change on exposure to new species and cells, the plot is thickening:

Airborne Mad Cow???

Here are few more references from my files.

Dietary exposure to sheep milk is risk of transmitting prion diseases

PrPSc spreading patterns in the brain of sheep linked to different prion types

Deer prions could jump, study says: Scientists fear chronic wasting disease protein could spawn new human illness

Blood test may screen for human form of mad cow

BUT - there's no real point in testing for just one strain because the suckers DO evolve, and tests are strain specific. AND, and and ...

Expression Of Retroviruses Changed After Prion Infection

Can Prions Be Epigenetic Regulators In Humans?

Researchers reveal how sick proteins move between cells in Parkinson's sufferers

So to protect profits, prions and prion diseases were allowed to spread round the world, evolve, and spread further. Now that prion diseases are epidemic, treatment offers significant potential for even more profit. From The Economist:

A glimmer of hope for a drug that treats disease caused by prions

CJD and a handful [sic] of similar neurological conditions are caused by the misfolding of a particular protein that is found in the membranes of certain nerve cells. The strangeness is that the misfolded protein, known as a prion, somehow catalyses other molecules of the protein to misfold in the same way. The result is a chain reaction in which more and more protein ends up as prions.

Nerve cells containing the prions stop working. The sufferer endures memory loss, personality changes and spontaneous, jerky bodily movements. Eventually, the disease kills him. A drug to treat CJD would therefore be welcome. And chemicals that seem either to prevent the misfolding, or to help the body clear away misfolded molecules, do, indeed, exist. The problem is turning at least one of those chemicals into an effective medicine.

A fascinating article about how "Military’s mad-science arm Darpa" are looking to prevent U.S. troop fatalities caused by blood loss by putting soldiers into a state of “suspended animation” where the heart stops beating and wounds don’t bleed.

Dr Miller from DARPA confidently predicts…

"Once the team comes up with the right elixir, it’ll undergo federally mandated safety testing. After that, the zombie vaccine will be sent to the battlefield for human application."

Wow. Missed that one. Thanks so much.

The zombie soldier "vaccine" sounds like a project from the new (privatized) space program's Human Research Program Program Plan. NASA's holding the ball on this one, but they're powerless - it's a corporate-government partnership.

Sub-goal 3F: Understand the effects of the space environment on human performance, and test new technologies and countermeasures for long-duration human space exploration.
The goal of the HRP is to provide human health and performance countermeasures, knowledge, technologies, and tools to enable safe, reliable, and productive human space exploration. The specific objectives of the HRP are:
1. Develop capabilities, necessary countermeasures, and technologies in support of human space exploration, focusing on mitigating the highest risks to crew health and performance. Enable the definition and improvement of human spaceflight medical, environmental and human factors standards.
2. Develop technologies that serve to reduce medical and environmental risks, to reduce human systems resource requirements (mass, volume, power, data, etc.) and to ensure effective human-system integration across exploration mission systems.

FYI - It's also been known for a long time that the world's vaccine stocks are contaminated with prions. Somewhere around 2000-05, the FDA's official Mad Cow Committee made a policy recommendation about screening for prions - their meeting transcripts are somewhere in my old files. Briefly paraphrased, the official finding was:

...because there are so many prion strains and new strains develop so often, easily and quickly - there is no point even trying to screen for prion contamination in vaccines, and no point replacing contaminated stocks.
