wow free food shelter and now cell phones too?
why am I busting my ass working 40 hours a week?

Bingo! And the more people that get that attitude and stop working, the happier Obama will be, because it is buying him votes for the next election.

The entitlement generation that not only wants, but DEMANDS hand outs like this, was a large portion of how he got elected to begin with.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I was not aware of wifi.

See... when you've got as 'cell' phone it doesn't take them long to work out who you are. A telemarketer, wrong number...government issued even. As long as that phone is on your person, they'll know where to find you if they need to.

If you wish to live off the bare minimum... the charity and scraps of the modern world... then ditch that job my friend... by all means! A whole world of spirit crushing pain awaits you! If I were you I would worry more about how much aid the US sends to other countries (some of which are hostile) while turning a blind eye for the greater part to the poverty and inequity of their own countrymen, woman and innocent children.

Food for thought!

Thank you for bringing this up boon. I really am a paranoid individual. I do have a problem with having a GPS device in my pocket. I was thinking of the tracking idea after I made the thread.

Star my friend

ur welcome

couldn't let my lil ATS Bro walk around
with a Gov issued tracking device on
his hip. And this one, they don't need
a court order or a search warrant to
get the info they desire on you.

They may pay a small fee for each phone,
but just look how much they will save by
busting welfare fraud

Lol...This is a long way from granite. It is black particle board that is scratched so bad and water warped. It is a cheap 40.00 computer desk from Walmart. I hate shopping at Walmart.

I have never owned granite anything.

now we can see exactly where you are any time we want. Who needs RFID Chips when they carry their free phones everywhere?

Exactly! Not only that, but they throw in a free warrant-less wiretap.

You got me thinking. You know, the suicide bombers have it all wrong. They should just come to the US and become voting taxpayers. That way they can contribute to the destruction of the US without all the mess.

I guess that's why some parts of the USA resemble the third world! It's simply not possible for some people (for whatever reason) to pursue the things they desire. Perhaps one day if you find yourself in a gutter, your position may change. Until then, consider yourself lucky!

I didn't realize you knew my living, working or fiscal situation. Oh yeah, that's because you don't. If you or anyone else wants to contribute time, money or other resources to the needs or wants of those less fortunate, go right ahead, that is your right and I am glad you have the freedom to do it. Unfortunately, people like you (see how I can be presumptive like you) often don't want to do it by personal will alone, especially if others aren't doing it too. Then you cry it must be mandatory for all to contribute, otherwise I don't want to be the only one.

I have seen many places where people are poor or in need and the community steps up via private charities or organizations. I have seen first hand the people who utilize government programs, I would be comfortable in underestimating at least half could get by without it. For that group, it often comes down to the inability to prioritize, live within their means, think before acting or sheer laziness. For the remainder, the truly in need, I have little issue with providing or assisting with the necessities for life: food and shelter. Cell phones don't come into the equation for any of them.

Spearhead my fellow Aussie... I always respect your opinion on the board - but I must ask if that was sarcasm in your last post? Honestly... it was boulder-dash! I can't fathom why the movements of a person of literally 'no consequence' to the status-quo, or to the grand scheme of things would be remotely interesting to a government agency. If they were handing out free cells to suspected terrorist cells and political dissidents, that argument may have some merit... But that's not who we are discussing here. We are discussing people who are having a bad run in life that would benefit greatly from a leg-up. The measure of a nation is not in is military might but in the compassion for those in need of help & charity.

another angle not considered yet.

The Gov accepting third party vendors
to spam your phone with text advertisements.
Now, instead of that spam fax machine running
out of paper, they go directly to ALL free phones.
They could make a killing on advertising products
and services. Mass spam delivered right to your
phone. What company would pass up an opportunity
to send out it's ad to Millions of potential customers
in one fell swoop ??? And you couldn't complain,
the phone is owned by them

If I start getting wierd messages or off the wall "occurances", the phone is gone.
I am very weary of the Patriot Act capabilities with this program.

Speaking as someone with a disability - with a husband who also has a disability - and living in a household that makes well below sub-poverty income....I've thought several times about trying to procure one of these phones for my husband - for emergencies only.

He's insistent on not getting one simply due to the fact that he just hates cell phones in general but I will admit it would give me immense peace of mind in case of some unforeseeable event.

The sad thing is, since we are both unable to work in a normal capacity any longer due to our respective conditions - even though we dearly wish we could still contribute to the workforce - the thought of being lumped in with the stereotypical "bottom feeders" due to our circumstance prevents him from taking any more assistance than he deems absolutely necessary.

Our lives are by no means glamorous by any stretch of the imagination, but in todays modern day and age - does that mean others in our (or similar) circumstance are not "worthy" of an emergency life-line?

We don't own a car, we have no debt or outstanding balances, we tend to our neighborhood and the well being of our neighbors and contribute to our community to the best of our ability - but somehow still, we are continuously looked down upon by those who continue to take the smallest things for granted on a daily basis.

Walking over nine miles to tend to routine errands while the world casually drives by and passes it's harsh judgement is no easy business, I assure you.

Where so many people think of cell phones as "status symbols" and signs of affluence - others look upon such things as invaluable blessings - especially when you might have to call for emergency assistance for medical conditions.

Well said. I believe that you should look into it anyways. My girlfriend knew that I did not want a phone. She got the darn thing anyways. I know that the are priceless in an emergency situatuion and this is why she got it.

I believe that you should get the phone without saying anything. He will be mad for a while, but I am sure that he will get over it. I am still trying to accept it, but I do understand why she got the phone.

You have the power. Use it for what you believe is right for you and your situation.

Thank you for sharing your story and I commend your husbands ethics.

If I may ask, is it a personal home computer with internet from which you post? Also, have you discussed some of your needs with your local churches or charitable organizations?

I would like to think that such groups in your area would be more than happy to assist with some of your needs, even to include cell phones. If not, perhaps with your abilities and resources/access, you can run or assist starting such programs. You would be not only contributing to your needs but the needs of others. Some of those groups might even pay for such services.
