US targets Twitter in bid to trap Assange

www.smh.com.au

The US government's legal hunt for Julian Assange will begin in a magistrates' court in Virginia today when its Attorney General seeks a disclosure order on Twitter to obtain the names, dates and locations of anyone using its services to communicate with WikiLeaks.

and from The Telegraph:

Federal investigators want private messages, contact information, bank account numbers and other personal details about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, the US soldier accused of supplying classified documents to the site, an Icelandic MP and two computer experts.

Free speech? This really puts my government up there with North Korea's. This is sick. I can only put my head down in shame as I watch my government trample on the freedoms of it's citizens.

How much more are they going to pack the powder keg before it blows up in their face? How much more are we as a people going to take before stopping the wild actions of a power hungry government?

It does go with due note that those in power are afraid of the truth... as they should be.

The truth is most likely more shocking then what can be imagined.

Think about this: They don't need to shut the internet down in the USA like they did in Egypt - they will censor it. The secret police will come knocking at your door for speaking your mind.

Be careful my friends - this is only the beginning.

If they'd use half the resources they use against WL to go after the criminals who they've exposed the jail business would boom. Too bad killing the messanger is fashionable these days.

I would be intrigued to see what they are going to do with all those usernames/ ip addresses, contact each government to arrest every single user, whom came into contact with Assange?

No one is going to sit back and take this crap from any Foreign Government. The US Government might find itself isolated if it doenst watch what it is doing.

Well Julian Assange isn't a US citizen but I doubt the Australian Government will put in a protest..

It's normal to find evidence AFTER you have concluded there was a crime commited..
Here is a Government hell bent on FINDING a crime..
Or maybe seeing what other dirt they can find to leak and discredit wikileaks..

On a side note: I wish they would check into the banking details and messages of a few past and current politicians....

This is why I only use twitter to follow other people and rarely post anything on it.

Agreed. Unfortunately the criminals who WL has exposed are the very people trying to stop it.

I do think that this is going to grow like wildfire. The US government is isolating itself from it's own people - killing our freedoms. They have gone too far.

Brilliant!

Like the US needs twitter to trap Assange.

Come on, people wake up, if the US wanted Assange, and/or to eliminate wikileaks they could have done that long before they published the first critical leaks.

Twitter isn't safe, run for the hills, don't tweet anymore or big brother will come after you.

I think my main point is that twitter is of US origin... a US company... Thus, it's users are subject to US dictatorship.
Did ya hear about Sarah Palin saying someone should assasinate Assange? I guess there is some law in Australia (sorry not from there) that says such a usage of words is against the law, so if Palin ever goes Down Under - they will arrest her.

Isn't that just it? They are hell bent on finding a crime which should make everyone suspect their motives.

You fail to see the larger picture at hand. Governments should have a level of transparency with their citizens. Where is the trust? Or are you just saying that you would be fine with the removal of all of your freedoms?

Big Brother has been after the truth long before Assange. At what point to people say "STOP"?

I hear you saying "Continue on Big Brother," my question is ... WHY?

In ten years time there will probably be no internet , for all we know it could have been set up as way of collecting personal info on all of us . A way of seeing how informed we are .
I reckon that just as we start to use the internet to plan a rebellion they will shut it down.

Imagine, its like their on a stakeout watching listening waiting for us to to make the 1st move then , boom game over
We have always always had our freedoms taken away., Maybe internets next .

I was being sarcastic to a degree.

Government agencies exploit wikileaks, it is entirely controlled and designed to achieve political and intelligence objectives.

There is not nor ever will be any transparency in government, if that were to happen the elite would fall all over the world.

Be sure to vote democrat or republican in the next elections if you want change.

The last line was also sarcastic.

I think that will happen only if we let it happen. People forget that we are more powerful then they are. We need to take control back from TPTB. This is a big step that is going unchecked.

Who (personally) issued the subpoena? Under what authority? These things need to be looked into.

You are right, the elite would fall all over the world - and hopefully you and I can witness this in our lifetime. I also agree with your views on politics, and I am sorry I mistook your sarcasm for something else... this is the interweb ya know! I can't see your facial expresions or your tone of voice.
You can denote sarcasm by ending it with the proper internet protocal /sarcasm

Thanks for your input. We are both on the same page.

Of course we do but we cant until we fight for a common cause, Everyone is arguing and getting divided by small issues .
We will never have a more worthy time to rebel than now.
We have the info we know who the enemy is theres nothing stopping us .
Issues like this thread are indicators of what may come soon .

Also, you people who are posting on facebook etc... be careful.

The @wikileaks feed tweeted, “Note that we can assume Google & Facebook also have secret US government subpoenas. They make no comment. Did they fold?”

Those 'small' issues I think are beginning to diminish because of the larger issues. With what is being reported by the press, Big Brother (the elitists) just stomped all over the internet. The implications of a government entity examining 200,000+ users and IP addresses are astounding! This is like the police raiding a local library and searching people for stealing books! How insane.

We all do have common cause, and I do think there will be massive protests soon. TPTB will try their best to squash anyone not on their band wagon. People need to be extremely careful.

What common cause does every culture, political ideology and person have? We are being subjugated by a government that is not what it seems to be. We have been lied too, and our government has been hijacked. There is no Republican, Democrat, Independent, Socialist, Communist, Anarchist or what ever political affiliation anyone classes themselves to be that is not affected by what is happening in our own country. Now that Twitter is being attacked and stripped apart - who and what is next? Who gave this authority any power to act without the consent of the majority? Who was the majority that represents us that let this happen?

This is crazy.
