Me too, here in Southwestern Ohio, Cincinnati. We are located almost on the Eastern Indiana border.

On Monday, January 21, I saw a huge flock of large black birds, don't know if they were crows or starlings, but it was so creepy.
They were swooping and landing on the trees, then swirling and flying up. What made me really notice them was some were out in the street, and even though I pulled my car up, they didn't fly up like they usually would. I mean, I had to creep through to avoid hitting them. It really reminded me of the scene at the end of the movie, The Birds........

Then again, on Thursday, January 24th, towards dusk, I saw the same thing, only even more. They were gradually heading North and East both times. Unfortunately, I didn't have a camera with me either time (well, camera-phone, but I was driving.)

Usually, in this area, the only time when we might see something similar is in the fall. In the spring I never see large flocks of birds like this, and I am outside all the time. Also, this is way too early to see so many birds all at once.

We had some snow the week before, but the snow cover was partially melted, the weather not too cold, and no snow was heading our way during that time, either.

The two incidences really looked just like that video from the guy in Minnesota.......that's how many birds there were.

You put alert in the title and speak of things in the fashion that a quake is coming. That is a prediction, you gave no specific date, however the "alert" puts things into that category.

I live in Missouri and yes it can happen at any time. However, no amount of preparing will get you ready for when this fault lets loose. Things will be disrupted in a major way.

It is funny the other day another thread was talking about FEMA and the grave plastic vaults and FEMA trains here in Missouri and the quake that was coming. When does hit like they say the railroads will be of no use and that quake will affect all of the U.S. simply due to shipping.

Back to my point though. Your "alert" makes it sort of a prediction. I do not believe it is coming anytime in the immediate future though.

I have seen rainbows in the clouds for years, and birds follow weather patterns and nature. There are plenty of birds still here. In fact there were a few just singing their heart out quite loudly just outside my front door, irritating my wife as she works on school work.

I hear you about the undermining. I live on the IL side and that's a big problem here too. I remember a few years ago outside of Sesser, IL, a brand new house sunk into a sinkhole before the owners could even move in. What's left of it still sits there empty if I recall correctly and it was no small home. I know families who have had their pools fall in too. The undermining in these parts would only add to the devastation if a quake were to occur. Also, a lot of homes around here are cheaply built, especially in the metro area and would not withstand a major earthquake. The midwest is majorly unprepared for such an event.

That reminds me that my granddaughter is active military and a paratrooper. She is on call for the USA for natural disasters. They have always used only Reserves. Here entire unit since the first of Dec. That is really odd and thank you for posting that. Now somebody knows something to have that notice in just a delievery of a package. That is probably the most alarming thing I ve seen next to the birds etc. Thanks

Ok, one simple question about why the birds are flying N & E ... considering the current blizzard conditions and our weather here is clear & 70 degrees, why are the birds Northbound rather Southbound?

Northeast may simply be the direction to their winter roost from wherever that group was feeding.

Birds seldom fly more than 15 miles in any direction. If you watch a winter roosting area, you will see them coming in from a number of different directions... so if I'm south of the roosting areas, I'll see groups of them fly north towards their usual roost for this time of year.

They seem to use the sun's height above the horizon to tell them when to scoot for the roost. I haven't watched them enough to know what the exact timing is, but I do know that it seems to be based on light.

The poles are shifting and magnetic fields are breaking down. Many animals' navigation systems are thrown off right now.

I worded it according to one of the videos. And good for you that nothing is strange in the animals there, but if you read through the posts a lot of people in different areas are experiencing these things including me. So it might mean that what ever is going on will not affect you, but some of us think it is time to prepare for such an event. And that is the point I have tried to make. All the millions $$$ FEMA and Homeland Security and 8 states are going to be spending on this drill and to be parpared for a quake in the New Madrid, Then we as individuals need to parpare also. Depending on the Gov. to save us is scary as well, they will eat a lot of those preparpared meals.

I felt the same way coolottie.... I have never seen even a delay that stated it was from weather, they just usually say that its late and leave it like that.
I also got a letter from them, never have I got this either.

Hello,

We're writing about the order you placed on January 29 2011 (Order# 002xxxxxxxxxxxxx)

Delivery of your package may be delayed due to extreme weather conditions or an unforeseen natural event. UPS will deliver the package as soon as possible. We are sorry about this unavoidable delay and we appreciate your patience.

I know that FEMA is always preparing for things of course, but preparing to this extreme for an earthquake is not normal. I don't care how much info you have you can't predict an earthquake like this. It seems more like they know that the New Madrid will blow but they know because it has been planned not because they think it will blow.
Not from the signs it is showing either.
Take Los Angeles for instance, how come they aren't worried about that area, they are having quakes daily and they have a huge fault that could go at any time.... doesn't make sense to me.

This is just military SOP. If there aren't enough reserve units for a particular type of duty that they would normally handle, active units can be put on alert in case they should be needed. Now if they move out for no apparent reason, that's a whole different situation.

this could affect a lot more people than just those in the immediate danger zone, who should be preparing for the absolute worst...if a megaquake causes water to flood the central US, all the trucking routes could be wiped out...no trucks = no food, plain and simple...martial law would surely be declared and the govt would take over everything, with FEMA camps opening while the earth was still shaking...this could get real ugly for the whole country really quick...

sensible advice.

people would be better off reading things like this and being prepared just in case, seeing as there is the possibility of places like Yellowstone and NMF going off.

However, I think it is better to see the bigger picture and give information, like you are, rather than creating false alerts based on scant paranoias like birds flying and lack of ants.

If / when the real deal happens or a real precursory alert, I hope it doesn't fall on deaf ears that have heard enough of 'OMG it's happening NOW type alerts' when it actually isn't.

Best keep track on official sites like USGS and local monitoring, the geo experts will give appropriate warnings.

People that own their own property need to know that if they leave it, the government can seize it. That is what happened in New Orleans 9th ward. The government just took the property and I don't know if it has been settled in the courts or not. They never even attempted to put electricity there at all. The last I was told there was one light pole with juice. They will claim you abandoned it. Good points you made, Thanks

companies like UPS etc have to give disclaimers and reasons.

Here, in the UK recent nationwide whiteout meant virtually no deliveries to anywhere, a lot of roads and rail weren't operable, simple as. Most companies added the same disclaimer to their delivery advice, as did the post office, royal mail etc etc.

Adding natural disaster is another possible reason and adding it could be valid, here there's been major flooding of some areas, it was a natural disaster, deliveries couldn't be made. It also decreases litigation for these companies for late delivery if it wasn't their fault.

Alternatively, the birds could be fleeing the massive winter storm headed their way.

Quoting this because it's the only logical and reasonable answer in this thread.

K thanks.

I'm in Connecticut and yes Ant's can even thrive with this cold weather. They love to live in wood when winter comes around.

----

as for the OP. That video scares me because we have all been taught that birds who follow the migration law usually travel SOUTH. Not NORTH!

Exactly.

No need for a 2nd line.
