That subject is a very sticky one. I have to say, a person has freedom of speech and freedom of opinion. However, you have to consider his position. This manis in charge of securing our borders.

It is his job to keep drugs from making it across the border. With the drug cartels moving massive quantities of pot across the border, you have to question this man's integrity now. Will he not stop pot traffickers cause it should be legal?

Freedom of speech doesn't apply when a person is in a position of power or a civil servant. Idont agree he should have been fired, only interrogated and questioned. Maybe after interrogation his superiors had reason to believe his integrity had been compromised.

I do agree with the man though. It should be legal, would cut the cartels out of the loop on pot at least.

This story isn't about drugs, its about brainwashing. Its done from as soon as we can speak & comes in 2 stages:

1) We are encouraged/forced to view all ideas in terms of a dichotomy. Everything must be either good vs bad, right vs wrong, god vs the devil, left vs right, etc. If we ask awkward questions, we are discouraged from doing so & often punished.

2) Once its established in our minds that there can only be 2 positions on any subject, we are encouraged to conflate all ideas on each side of the divide.

Thus thinking pot-smoking should be legal is the equivalent of socialism, which must also be the equivalent of wanting to overthrow the govt. In the same way, a 15yr old boy that thinks he should legally be able to have sex is a fetishist & must also want to pee on the baby Jesus.
Of course, whats amusing to those of us who managed to get by with a modicum of curiosity intact & an interest in observing human activity, is that the "right", "good", "godly" ideas are not only far from fixed, but also make up the bulk of the ideas that place restrictions on individuals in order that we can live together as a society, ie they are socialism.

I'm hoping that, since we're ATSers, if we dont already know the difference between socialism & its various forms vs communism & its various forms, we can Google it & not jump to any conclusions based on the false dichotomy style brainwashing I've outlined above. With a Google page open, we can look up Libertarianism & Anarcho-Syndicalism & ponder, just what is the difference between these ideas that are placed @opposite ends of the false spectrum? Hmmm...

With those thoughts in mind, we might then ponder which organisations train us to think in this either/or fashion 1st? Who tells us that hierarchy is good vs constantly changing consensus to reflect current circumstances is bad? Why do they do this?

Is it possible that they prefer a life getting well paid for doing nothing but telling others how to live their lives?

Is it good, bad or none of the above to have people driving around stoned?

i'd trust a stoned driver over a drunk driver any day. But, that's just my opinion.
Drunk guy can't walk in a straight line. Stoned guy has no issues. +1 for pot

I have to ask you...

Do you think it's possible the man could think cannabis should be legal, yet he has the ability to perform his job as well as his peers?

Police see situations all the time where they use discretion. They do not follow their personal beliefs, they follow the law.

He did not say he used it. He expressed a private opinion...I believe he has a case.

People can walk in a straight line very easily and still be over the legal limit.

I've seen people so stoned that I wouldn't trust them with a pencil, let alone a car.

You seem to be comparing "falling down drunk" with a nice mild high (I would obviously trust the person with a nice mild high too in that case, but it's an absurd comparison).

I didn't insult you. I called you on the ignorance of your statement. My apologies if you were insulted by that.

There IS a good reason to legalize pot, and every other drug: making it illegal is creating a crime where there is no victim. It is a fundamental violation of our rights.

The only reason to make it illegal is to attempt to control people doing something that you don't care about doing personally.

"First they came for the fourth amendment,
and I did not speak out, because I didn't deal drugs.
Then they came for the fifth amendment,
and I was silent because I owned no property involved in crimes.
Then they came for the sixth amendment,
and I did not protest because I was innocent.
Then they came for the second amendment,
and I said nothing because I didn't own a gun.
And then they came for the first amendment,
and I could say nothing at all."

Huh? Didn't you just say you could smoke five joints and not be impaired at all, so what is the problem? It doesn't really matter if they drive a bus or taxi or just their own car.

yes I as in I smoke 5 joints. I didnt say everyone can . Unlike you I dont assume to know everything about everone in the world .

I didn't make that assumption, but if you're going to have laws regarding when someone is impaired and when they aren't you can't just leave it up to individuals to decide, "yeah I'm okay to drive." It reminds me of people who say, "I drive better when I'm drunk!" Oh you do? Great, can you bring my kids to school then (have a few more shots first though)?

This is part of the problem - there is no way to determine if a person is stoned while driving (or if they are, how stoned they are). You can determine that with alchohol and arrest people who are reckless and drive while impaired, there is no way to do that with pot.

He's a border guard. I think it's perfectly sensible to fire him over this. He thinks it should be legalized, and therefore is a risk to security because he might let it pass instead of seizing it and arresting the person carrying it.
