In any case those of you who are Obama supporters should get ready to see these activities being used against him in the next election as a sign of weakness.

If you are right, that will probably lead to me supporting Obama. If the Republican case for the presidency is going to be that Obama bowed, then I am not hopeful they have any actual solutions to any problems because apparently they are busy worrying about trivial crap like this. We will see. I have to wonder if President Palin would shake hands for fear of smudging her notes or if that might be just as petty to be concerned about.

No offense but youre missing the point.

American presidents bow to no one. America is the country that people look up to no matter what the other countries culture are. We don't bow because of who we are. It is that simple. But Obama is not a true American and doesn't understand what America stands for. Thats the truth.

Also some thing else to add. I don't want to burst your bubble or anything but very few countries actually look up to America at all. There used to be a time where this was true but no more, your country gone down in peoples eyes so much in recent years ever since 9/11 and the launch of the two preceding wars that pretty much nobody respects you anymore, let alone looks up to you.

And it is the this kind of attitude which has helped that decline.

This is one of the most arrogant statements I've read in quite a while. Get off your high horse, he is being courteous for christs sakes, a bow in Chinese culture is the very same as a handshake in Western culture. Perhaps a tad low, looks a bit awkward, but that's it. Not everything that happens is cause to jump up & down in anger. And get that "we are America we are the best we bow to no-one" arrogance out of your head, its precisely this kind of attitude that taints your country.

(double posting accident)
Please don't think even for a second that most of America is like the idiot poster you replied to. The arrogant idiots are just louder than the rest of us who respect the rest of the world. As an American it pains me to think some of our citizens consider countries as "best" and "worst" even though we are all on the same planet.

Omg the leader of the free world showed what it considered a customary form of respect. - lynch him with a rope made from the flesh of republicans asap.

wow there's nothing like politics to bring out the haters.

Of course the dems would say ha ha our president is taller than your 4 eyed dork. k they would never say that but the yonger ones would certainly think it which means we are winning the war of the minds against the red devil.

good times

Wow, after reading this whole thing I am 100% convinced that there are people making comments in this thread that...

A. have never left the country, or specifically the lower 48 for that matter.
B. have never read anything from an author who wasn't from the lower 48.
C. are probablly addicted to watching WW11 documentaries all from US perspectives.
D. actually believe the use of the A-bomb was a miraculous triumph.
E. to this day still believe Iraq had WMD's.
or
F. have all of the above qualities, wrapped up in an attitude suggesting that we "bow to no one because of who we are".

In my opinion, damn straight he should bow, and he should be openly asking for the forgiveness of all the countries that got duped into supporting our fictitious war on Iraq.

And bowing in certain parts of the world is seen as normal and a sign of respect.

If it is such a sign of respect in their culture then why doesn't Hu reciprocate?

Because Hu is trying to respect Obama by doing what American's do: Shake hands without bowing.

There is also the respect shown to elders thing, it might be a differnt thing if our president was older then theirs, they show respect toward age like they once did in the USa.

I've neglected to read through all seven pages of responses to this thread. Just the first and last. More than one blind-patriotic "American Presidents bow to no one" nonsense.
In case you were unaware, China virtually owns the United States. You owe them more money than you could possibly imagine. Obama knows the score.

Besides that it really, honestly could just be a show of respect for the leader of the worlds next new superpower. The old empire is crumbling...

No President in the history of the United States has ever 'bowed' to a foreign leader. NEVER!...The next thing you'll tell me that it's ok to 'dip' the American Flag to a foreign power...How low can he go.....

Come on, now you're grasping at straws here. Respect for elders? Henry Kissinger is ancient!

It is a sign of respect, that is why Hu didn't bow.

That's no different then the Chinese escorts that came off the plane saluting American soldiers as a sign of mutual respect. I don't see anything wrong with it. It is diplomacy that is how things are done. You don't just ignore the customs of your visiting diplomats.

Honestly it's that mentality and attitude that keeps us from finding peace with our fellow man and one another. I mean if you had a neighbor that was Japanese and they asked you to remove your shoes before entering there home. Would you curse em like a dog or slap em because you don't do that in your home and by god are you saying there is something wrong with my shoes.
