*that's the title of the article

People around him now claim that he was experimenting with a psychotropic drug from Mexico that shamans are thought to use to explore their dreams and dream states. The shooter was 'into' his dreams and kept a dream log. Nothing wrong with that ... but mix an unbalanced mind with hallucinogens and it can turn explosive ... as we all saw last Saturday.

Info Wars

“I know that he was experimenting with the drug or herb or whatever it is – Salvia Divinorum – and from what I hear he used it quite frequently.” Osler stated.

According to several other readily available reports, several students in Loughner ‘s classes said that he would regularly spontaneously laugh out loud without warning. This is commonly associated with Salvia Divinorum use as the video below highlights

The drug, otherwise known as Seer’s Sage, is a dissociative, meaning that it can reduce or block signals to the conscious mind from other parts of the brain. Therefore it is capable of producing hallucinations, sensory deprivation, dissociation, dream-like states and trances.

That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. The effects of Salvia last mere minutes and you barely walk on it, let alone pick up a gun. It is one of the4 most powerful hallucinogens out there, yes, but you have to be REALLY skilled and practically immune to its effects to do anything normal on it, like speaking with real words, or getting out of your seat. It produces a profound feeling of falling backwards too. It isn't like '___' or Mushrooms where you can operate essentially normally. Drugs also don't effect your mind after the fact. You have to have been doing a LOT of ALL the time for them to have a mental effect on you when you are NOT using them. I know some very big pot heads who basically watch Comedy Central all day and when they are not high they are actually very awake and productive, even if they vegged out all week smoking 3 grams a day.

If he was under the influence of this drug when he set out to kill people it would have worn off before he ever got out of the taxi.

I report .. you decide. This is from Info Wars and Alex Jones.
If you can debunk it .. great ... go for it.

My thought ... take an unbalanced mind .. mix with ANY high powered drug (even those that other people can take with no problem) ... and you get problems.

Salvia lasts like ten to fifteen minutes. The lower extracts are less potent than ganja. The idea that it would influence anyone toward violence is crazy. If your committed to mass killing salvia is not gonna push you over the edge. If he was a meth head, or crack addict I could see the case. He might have drank a beer once. Beer is to blame for his killing all those people.

If you all can debunk this then I suggest a mass emailing to Info Wars and Alex Jones.

Let him defend his hypothisis. It wouldn't be the first time he has had to.

The effects may only last minutes.... but using it regularly and a lot with weed(not that weed is bad necessarily) but with both those drugs that are linked to mental disorders with heavy and long -term use on some people and especially those who are mentally ill already very likely set this psycho off.

I really believe it was that he was already a psycho... and all the drugs he used combined with his already mental state probably set him off.

You can chew a bolus and it lasts awhile but it is very subtle that way- and it tastes HORRID. HORRID!!! It's like bitter and - ewwwwwwwwww.

Smoking concentrated might last a while, I do not know, but the regular dried leaves off the plant? 3 minutes max?
And the little boogers are hard to grow here- in fact, it's more of a spiritual exercise to try to keep one alive in the SE than to smoke one, IMO.

I doubt any drug set him off. My bet is more like he was attempting to self-medicate.

Well, I think that the points being brought up that the drug wouldn't sustain itself until the shooting event is a touch fallacious. When we take drugs, especially hallucinageons, we have a differing perspective that lasts beyond the perceived effects of the drug itself. When shamans go on a spirit quest using such cocktails, they don't forget what they experienced or saw, they incorporate it into their philosophy and teaching. McKenna came up with TimeWave Zero under such effects, but formalized it and carried it into the future where it's still studied, long past the attrition of the direct psycho-active effects. My point is that JLL might still have been largely influenced by what he experienced while experimenting with Salvia (a very strong and strange drug that one can buy in a head shop), and that continued to work on and change his perspective of reality which ultimately aided in his mad decision to commit the shooting. These things can be progressive and culminate over time...

This is just another sensation grab by those wishing to sell news.
I am sure that until we see toxiclogy reports we can discout these statements to a great degree.
Though they merely INTIMATE that he MAY have been under its influence,NO PROOF is offered nor will it be im thinking.Though its use is not reccomended for those whose mental state is unbalanced.
Everyone who can get an agenda ticket punched, invariably jumps on these news bandwagons.
It is getting tiring, to say the least.

Their findings corroborate reports that the most profound effects of smoking salvia appear almost immediately and last about eight minutes. Effects include speech and coordination loss.

en.wikipedia.org...

I doubt he was high on this Salvia Divinorum when he massacred those poor people. Witnesses say he fired 15 to 20 shots. He hit 19 people. That's pretty good coordination for someone who is high on this stuff.

What long term use can do to the already mentally ill is of course another matter. My brother is schizophrenic and weed eventually sends him off on one.

However I think the phrase 'Under the influence' suggests taking immediatelly prior to the shooting.

Blaming this on salvia, talk radio, or anything other than the fact that Laughner was psychotic and unstable is nonsense. The guy was crazy and crazy people do crazy things, that's it. Anyone who tries to spin this into an indictment of some unrelated issue that they have a problem with is taking advantage of a tragedy and people's feelings in order to advance their own agenda. It's devisive and manipulative and untrue.

I don't see any claim that he was high during or that intoxication led him to kill.

The claim is that a sick kid could have gotten sicker by continually abusing this drug.

The drug is no more at fault than the gun. It's the fault of the psycho who self medicated rather than seek out real help.

A lot of this is coming for that Osler family- does that dad work for the DEA or something? Any ties to anything like that?

Other friends say he did drugs and quit-went really clean a couple of years back- and THEN went really crazy.

Mentally ill people often do drugs to self medicate, then it looks like the statistics can show it causes it if one just looks at the numbers- Yes, some hallucinagins can cause latent problems to pop out, but that number is nothing compared to the number of folks that are mentally ill that THEN use drugs to self medicate.

If you just look at the numbers of the dually diagnosed, it would alarm anyone and make anyone think that drugs=psychosis. It's a chicken and egg problem, IMO.

I don't know the first thing about Salvia...it's short term effects...it's long term effects...it's duration...or whatever.

But it doesn't really matter. It doesn't matter if he used it that morning, the day before, the week before. If it comes out that he was in fact a user of this unregulated and unknown "new drug"...at any time...then that is all that is need to start regulating it. I know there have been talks before about making Salvia illegal...this may just be the issue that will push that.

If it's a harmless "drug"...then sorry to the users of it...but most likely it will be illegal soon.
