What a terrible event.

USGS says the 8.9 happened at 6:46pm NZDT, I had no idea and went to bed oblivious to it having happened.

First I knew of it was opening my computer this morning and LISS screens (my home page) were black, knew that wasn't good.
Looks like nothing much threatening here Tsunami wise www.civildefence.govt.nz...

any news on what happened in Hawaii

edit on 11-3-2011 by muzzy because: (no reason given)

Its OK, found this
4.23am: Kauai has been the first of the Hawaiian islands hit by the tsunami triggered by an 8.9 earthquake near Japan.
Water rushed ashore in Honolulu, swamping the beach in Waikiki and surging over the break wall in the world-famous resort but stopping short of the area's high-rise hotels.
Waves about two metres high were recorded on Maui, and one metret in Oahu and Kauai. Officials warned that the waves would continue and could become larger, but a scientist at the tsunami warning centre said it didn't appear that they would cause major damage in Hawaii. www.stuff.co.nz...

I knew I was going to wake up to really bad news.
I am worried about the reactor in Japan and of
course everything else. I hope those in Calif
and Oregon stay on high dry land. This is
so bad I can barely think of what to say -
shocking.

Santa Cruz being hit right now.. Boats loose from the marina, watching one sink right now. Water is really muddy brown and they even had a whirlpool going on.

This is so crazy.

Right now I am thinking about the Japanese people. I know this is a tragic and terrible moment. But I am not focusing on the details of the destruction. I am admiring their will to stand against the elements. They know their island is a dangerous place. Their history is full of catastrophe and tragedy. As horrible as this is, they will recover and survive. It is a complex culture that has developed a built-in coping mechanism to disaster.

I'm not trying to define them. I'm just trying to reassure myself that they are doing everything possible to save lives. They were prepared. Now all that practise will become action without delay. I hope. The reason for the drills is so you don't have to make decisions when there is an emergency. Time is the critical factor. I know they are doing their best.

Japan, my thoughts are with you. I'm sure the whole world has you on their minds as well. And there's a whole lot of praying going on as well.

I just seen some people (5) walking their dog on the beach

What is wrong with them?, they are toast when the wave hits

edit: now just seen a car, may have been the Coast Guard

My heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones over there, and to the survivors who now must be in a terrble state.
There are plenty of threads about ths now on ATS, so lets look at the technical side of it here.

How do they get 8.9

The phase data from USGS shows 7.9 GS, 7.3mb and 7.3ML and the highest station reading is 8.0.
Closest magnitude type is the Energy and Broadband solution of 8.6 Me

JMA have it at 7.9ML

Granted Geofon have 8.9Mw too
(notice they have stopped publishing phase data, instead showing beach ball solutions)

the RAS (Russian Academy of Science) has it at 7.2mb and 8,8 Ms. They have some pretty high readings on their phase data, 2 x 9.1Ms and 1 x 9,0 Ms

Max. PGV was 49cm/sec which is actually quite low, given the magnitude

Do you feel that their is any possibility of a larger surge where you are? I have tried to keep with the news but its slim to none as far as the west coast.

Our beach here in san Francisco seems to be staying out of the fray. Santa Cruz is the one taking the beating. There will be more damage when this 3rd surge gets there I think. There has been 2 million dollars of damage so far at the Santa Cruz Marina.

I am watching this live cam at Laguna Beach in Southern Cali.

If you find you're getting stressed and anxious, take a break and remove yourself for as long as you can.

I actually counted 120.. but. I lost track a time or 2 so it might be off by a few numbers... it's just as scary though. I can't imagine massive fires everywhere, tsunamis and earthquakes every few minutes.. I just can't imagine it! It must be the most horrific thing that many of those people have ever experienced.

guys, is this normal ? so many after-quakes ? I haven't followed any of the other major earthquakes like I am now so I have no idea how this would work... but... all day long now ? and they keep coming and coming, and we can still see some over magnitude 6.

Wow, a big increase since yesterday. None of these
quakes is what one would call small.
