see tha Balleny Is quake went up 2 decimal points too.

Do you think its just laziness, in that they can't be bothered changing the Details page during the 7 days
or deliberately putting in a low number on the 7 Days list because they know more people read that (compared to the 8-30 days) and don't want to alarm folks with all the 6's

You got a big task on your hands following all those changes, I started on NZ revisions 4 months ago, but have not progressed beyond the 17th January
, I noted that not many people seem interested, have had 41 hits in those 4 months, compared to the Preliminary EQ pages with 1284 hits.
The blog traffic closely follows local earthquake events, Sept 2010 and Feb/March 2011 the most visits after the Christchurch quakes, been a downward slope since.

I'm going to keep going with it though, just when I get inspired and have a few hours to spare, and do a few days revisions, usually when things are quiet quake wise.
Doesn't help my Firefox crashed at the weekend, lost all my links and parameters for building the kmz files on GPS Vis. have to start from scratch using whatever I had saved on Notepad files

Using Chrome now, its a bit different!

Muzzy,

sorry to hear of your FF problems. Wondering if you might be able to recover your bookmarked links from the backup file under App Data. Take a look at this advice on the FF help forum. Maybe it will help?

Best regards,

Mike

Text Sorry but this HAS to be deliberate.

I know you've been looking at this (magnitude changes after 7 days) for some time now, do you have any notions as to why such a regular and observabe pattern has emerged?

Thanks, I had a look through App.Data but theres nothing there now, I took Firefox right off, loaded on a new one but still had problems, so dumped that too.
Chrome is OK, the main thing I keep forgetting is when you click on a 'favourite" tab on the bookmark bar it opens in the same window as the one you are in, unlike Firefox, I guess you can change that somehow, but I haven't used Help yet.
ie I can't even find Help yet

I've got most of the main favs I use up and running, just lost all the quake networks pages, I had quite a few, luckily Putermans QVS has most of them too, so can get from there

Off to read Chrome for Dummies now

Basically no. It achieves nothing as far as I am concerned as the figures will be in the listings on an historical basis. Since some go up and some go down I can see the purpose.

The only think i can think of is that different 'departments' deal with the two lists, but that does not exaplin the 8th day change really.

I am going to start saving the QED text file daily. If the data changes long before the 8th day i shall know, and that will definitely indicate a deliberate policy.

And now we're starting to get mass whale strandings/deaths here in NZ & OZ, over the last couple of days...don't like the sound of that, given that similar events preceded the Feb Christchurch & March Japan quakes!

Haven't had any noticeable quake activity for some weeks in Canterbury, so praying the above doesn't mean anything.

Happens every year November to March, nothing out of the ordinary.
Try stuff.co.nz and search whale strandings, there are pages and pages of entries,a few coincide with major earthquakes but more don't.

Wonder why USGS are sticking with mb for this 5.8 Papua quake

perhaps converting to Mw takes it over the threshold, can't have too many 6's can we

5.8 Papua
RAS have 5.9mb (no Ms reading)

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A strong earthquake hit Indonesia's eastern province of Papua on Wednesday, causing panic among residents, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The earthquake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2, struck at 8:42 a.m. local time Wednesday (11:42 p.m. GMT Tuesday), said Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.

Panic as strong earthquake ...

Guess Indonesia is reporting it as a 6.2!
