If each step was 0.1 that would actually be a linear relationship I think. I am NOT a mathematician I should add.

The calculation comparing the size of 2 quakes is (how much bigger):
size = 10 ^ (larger - smaller)

The calculation for the strength of two quakes is (how much stonger):
strength = 10 ^ (1.5 * (larger - smaller))

The ^ is computer speak for "to the power of" and * is multiply

This gives you this if you are comparing to a mag 4 for example

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/0faab3b6a6cb.png[/atsimg]

To calculate the (approximate) energy in joules:
joules = (10^(4.8+(Magnitude*1.5)))

A load of 'logs' for you

Lake Taupo was mentioned a couple of pages back. Now usually when activity is recorded here it also shows up at Whakamaru and Reporoa...same mag and same depth....except over the last 48 hours.
Here's Reporoa
2011-08-29 23:19:55 3.2 2 Km
2011-08-29 19:11:52 4.4 3 Km
2011-08-29 19:15:12 3.2 1 Km
2011-08-29 19:16:22 2.9 3 Km
2011-08-29 13:28:13 2.8 5 Km
2011-08-28 20:18:53 3.5 3 Km
2011-08-28 19:30:02 2.5 5 Km
2011-08-28 20:23:35 2.9 5 Km
2011-08-28 22:25:00 2.4 7 Km Bit worriesome..not one but 9!
Now Whakamaru
2011-08-29 23:19:55 3.2 2 Km
2011-08-29 19:11:52 4.4 3 Km
2011-08-29 19:15:12 3.2 1 Km
2011-08-29 19:16:22 2.9 3 Km
2011-08-29 13:28:13 2.8 5 Km
2011-08-28 22:25:00 2.4 7 Km
2011-08-28 20:18:53 3.5 3 Km
2011-08-28 20:23:35 2.9 5 Km
2011-08-28 19:30:02 2.5 5 Km Again 9,
Now Taupo
2011-08-29 13:28:13 2.8 5 Km
2011-08-28 22:25:00 2.4 7 Km
2011-08-28 20:18:53 3.5 3 Km
2011-08-28 20:23:35 2.9 5 Km
2011-08-28 19:30:02 2.5 5 Km Only 5
As I said, there's usually just the same mag at same depth recorded at all three.
Any takers?

I'll have another look at that later in the day ( end of month office work right now), Whakamaru and Reporoa are further away from Tokaanu than Taupo is.
What exactly is the station code name of Taupo you are quoting, Taupo has its own little network of stations (being a volcano itself.
RATZ is the closest to the swarm, www.geonet.org.nz... its not available off the earthquakes drums page, its off the volcanos page

Edit: OK I'm done now.
I see there were 3 more quakes at Tokaanu and 3 in the lake itself today.

When I did my download yesterday I actaully skipped the 27th to get to the Tokaanu Swarm, and missed something really interesting.
There was a quake (perhaps the first one in this swarm) at the other end of the Tokaanu Hydro Tunnel in Lake Rotoaira right at the Intake Race. The the swarm itself on the other side of the mountain just south of the power station itself.
I'm wondering if there wasn't a massive download of water out of the Lake for some reason, it is Winter after all, maybe it was at capacity.
Now keep in mind that right where the swarm was is also a huge Aquifier (underground resevior)

Heres the quake prior to the swarm at the tunnel intake
2.288, 3569433, -39.02259, 175.71281, 2011/8/27 19:19:6, 8, Lake Rotoaira, Te Ponanga Saddle Rd, Otukou 3382, No
location map

and heres the swarm map again

I'm not thinking that the massive rush of water through the tunnel and out the tailrace caused the earthquake swarm, but perhaps the change of what may have been hundreds of thousands of tons of weight from Lake Rotoaira over to the Tokaanu side upset the balance of the underground natural reservoir there

The Tokaanu- Waihi Geothermal Feild is about 3k to the NW.

4.9 ~ 338 ~ 0.34
5.0 ~ 477 ~ 0.48
therefore a Mag 5.0 is 41.2% bigger than a 4.9

Thanks guys for the reply. I am aware of after shocks, It had quieted down after the few days after the initial quake, and few after shocks. Then after the hurricane came through, we started having "after shocks" again.

Now maybe this means nothing at all...however, I wanted to share something with you that I noticed today.

I was watching a flight tracker found here I do not know how to take pics of what I was seeing...but what I saw (while ATS was having issues today), was this...

On August 29th, EST @ 12:02 p.m., I observed US Air Force Gulf Stream air craft @ 37.069/-78.1612, which is very close to the VA quakes. It stayed in the same location for about an hour and a half, while all the other air craft on the map were moving. I went into Flash Earth, which is like google earth...and there was nothing much there when zoomed in...looked like old sheds, buildings...yet that US air craft kept showing the same location for about a an hour and a half.

Then the craft started moving, @ 1:26 8/29/11, the air craft, USAF Gulfstream was @ 37.0066/-80.2507 (West VA quake was at 37.916/-80.215)...the link I was watching for flight tracking, lost the air craft after that location. . It only shows the east and west coast. I tried to find another flight tracker - to no avail. I wanted to see if it showed up in CO, at the same area of their quakes. I have no idea if it did or not.

I thought it very strange that the USAF craft was showing over the locations of the quakes on, or near, the 37 line of the previous quakes.

Does anyone else find this strange/interesting?

because it timed out

Well maybe not
, I found this graph showing the levels at Lake Rotoaira ( the ponding source behind the tunnel intake) Lake Level graph

So the lake level has actually gone UP in the last few days

New theory then, maybe they have actually shut the tunnel off and now that there is no water going through, the balance either side has been upset ...............................

I can't answer your question, but that site is cool

It opened on New Zealand for me and I could see the flights heading home for the day.

How reliable is it though, I had a look at the US and there is a flight off the coast of Oregon t right now
Airline: UPS
Flight: 5X59
From: Hong Kong, Hong Kong (HKG)
To: Anchorage, Ted Stevens (ANC)
Aircraft: Boeing 747-45E (B744)
Reg: N578UP
Hex: A76DF1
Altitude: 37000 ft (11278 m)
Speed: 507 kt (939 km/h, 583 mph)
Track: 134°

Now I know enough about our Planets geography to know that to get to Alaska from Hong Kong you don't need to go to Oregon. without having to look at the fligh path here data.flight24.com...

Why is it off Oregon?

Edit: I had a look again 5 minutes later and its gone now

ok, yesterday we talked about length of time between MAG 5+ E/Qs etc...

on the 24th we had 5 MAG 5+ E/Qs,,,, plus a 6+ ,,,PLUS a MAG seven ...

on the 25th we had TEN mag 5+ E/Qs...

on the 26th we had 5 mag 5+ E/Qs,

and the 27th = again 5x mag 5+ E/Qs...

THEN, we had only 2 on the 28th,
then only ONE yesterday...

now today we go and get a 6.8...
..................................................

anyway, change of direction...

anyone know whats going on in Antarctica...???

i have been thinking we must be due for a big E/Q down there... for some reason...
but i cant find many records for down there,

but i found this site...

aslwww.cr.usgs.gov...

+ it is showing some sort of activity...

+
all their other sensor sites on the Antarctic continent seem to be OFF-LINE...?

just wondering...

That would be the Banda Sea 6.8 showing up, its a looooong way from Indonesia to Palmer Station.
PMSA isn't on the Phase Data but looks on the graph about 7:08 arrival time there.

I have a look at this site occasionally erebus.nmt.edu...

You can see that same trace on ABB (Abbots Peak)(off that page) right now, starts at 7:08 UTC

MAG ~ TNT TONS ~TNT KILOTONS

And the calculation is? (Being lazy I have it somewhere but others might like to know)

@summer5 - love the flight tracker. We have an air lane over us at around 30,000 ft. It is very handy for finding out a particular aircraft.

Look in the bottom left hand corner. See the map link info e.g. flightradar24.com/51.5,-9/6. Add the lat lon you want to the top bar address and refresh e.g flightradar24.com/40,-110 sits you in the area of Denver. Then zoom out until you find aircraft. It uses the IP of your ISP to give your initial location if you have not used it before, otherwise if goes back to your last viewed coordinates. Zoom out and you will see it is heavily Europe oriented (for a change
)

@muzzy: It is not always reliable. As you have observed planes can be misplaced, or they sometimes freeze.

@shane: The activity is the Band Sea quake. That plot is one of the LISS set.

Surely not???

If so.... what are we in for?? "World Wobble"?
