No doubt the Darfield quake aftershocks are pushing up the figures somewhat

Yep that would be true.
Thats why you can't compare a month of one year to a month of another year

say we compared August 2010 with August 2009 then August 2009 would be way higher because of the July Dusky Sound 7.3ML (7.6Mw) aftershocks

maybe I should compare Oct 2010 (the month after Darfield) with August 2009 (the month after Dusky)

but even that might be slanted too, seeing as Dusky would be 10 days ahead of Darfield down the track (Dusky on the 15th July Darfield on the 3rd Sept ...... UTC)

The best way of looking at quakes is a rolling 12 month figure for energy but that is a massive amount of work. When I get a chance I am going to automate some of these things. It would be great to get rolling 12 month energy figures by just clicking a button!

last one was 2 hrs ago

I probably should have said something was going to happen, yesterday. The last 2 days the number of quakes around the country dropped to very low levels, 7 on St and 8 on Sunday, a sign something ain't right

Trouble is you are never sure if its due to there being no quakes or the geonet peeps are just having a lazy weekend and hadn't bothered to put the events up on the data base

This short lull in activity has happened enough in the past to be almost a gauranteed portent of something about to snap, the closest you'll ever get to predicting significant events I think.

Don't know if any of you folks are still following the aftermath of the 6.0 in south eastern Iran recently. Currently, including the three or so fore-shocks, the total number of quakes is 53 and it is still rolling on.

Google Earth KMZ file of the current quakes.

That small earthquake swarm in southern Iran... check the area just northwest of the swarm:

Ancient Volcano in Iran awakening?

GPS can be off as we know with the actual locations, BUT... this ancient volcano crater looks very old.. (say, over 80,000 years). And just like Yellowstone, the plate moves, and craters follow a path (This is one way they date the eruptions, based on plate movement, etc)

These quakes could be the magma coming up again.. Very interesting stuff.

Definitely Subduction going on.
May be related to this about Gisborne moving west, but rather in this case a release of the stress buildup in a short space of time
www.geonet.org.nz...
www.geonet.org.nz...

While things were quiet over the weekend I started a new project, Cross Sections of NZ showing the earthquake depth vs longitude relationship, in latitudial sections of 5 degrees, which shows "the angle of dip" of the Plates.
I only got as far south as Taupo/Wairoa level so far.

Still nothing

I sent them an e-mail " whats going on, the people want to know"

maybe they contract this out to some outfit in Cairo, Egypt and they can't do anything right now, like NZ Vodaphones call centre situation

"Thanks to the troubleshooting effort and early morning network changes of our system administrators, DHI connectivity problems appear to have been remedied. This means that you can connect to IRIS DHI using the dmc or dhiserv nameserver addresses. Thanks for your patience as we worked to sort out what was happening to the connection attempts. You should be able to resume normal use of your DHI tools."

This ended up in my junk folder. Basically GEE should be back on line.

@anmarie - sorry I banged the post in before I read the thread. I have checked and it is working OK now.

Something I've been meaning to add here for a couple of months is a link to the Aussie Natural Hazards Map. I've been watching the site for a number of years so I'm used to the occasional small quake here.. and I do mean occasional with maybe one or two each month.

But, from midway through 2010 things started to get more active and I noted the magnitudes also slowly and steadily rising until we are seeing many quakes around the country now.

Them Geoscience Australia are a funny bunch, they never reply to queries, I've sent 2 over the last year, just basic stuff like "what type of Magnitude do you fellas use?" and :why do you blokes never upgrade or downgrade event magnitudes like the other Networks do"
Govt Dept

That map is hard to read yellow on white.
I prefer the list page myself.www.ga.gov.au...
as long as you know what WA and NSW stand for

Got this reply to my query at 7 AM;

"Yes, there clearly appears to be a problem with locations reaching the catalogue from our earthquake hypocentre derivation application. Thank you for letting us know. We will be looking into this right away. "

Must be a major glitch
