Actually it makes sense to me. Handguns can be concealed, they are great for criminal activities. Longguns is what you want when the brown stuff hits the fan, military invasion, a corrupt goverment tuning against its people. If "they come to take your guns" you stand a better chance with an assault rifle, if they send soldiers and you have your pistols you are out of range by a long stretch.

Sadly the tune out of goverment is the opposite. You are being told that "normal" people do not need assault rifles, but handguns are okay.

To protect self from criminals.
To protect self from government.

Well, if we were all allowed to carry long guns everywhere, I would agree. Handguns are easy to conceal, but so are long guns if you run around in a trenchcoat. Criminals will find ways to usurp the law if it is possible. Until we are all required to open carry, wearing spandex, I don't think it is a good idea for handguns to be banned. Criminals will still hide handguns under baggy clothes, and do what they do best, breaking the law.

Ever try to shoot a rabbit with a rifle? Or a rattler? Sure, a shotgun may work best...but if you are already lugging an 8 lb rifle in the brush (and possibly a 300 lb deer out of the brush) why carry a shotgun, too? A nice sidearm is excellent for such a situation.

As well, protection of personal property. Granny may not mind using a 4-10, but most females (my mom is a widow) are intimidated by a shotgun, even one that small. But a .22 or a .25 works well and isn't intimidating.

There is no need to limit guns. None. It needs to be enhanced. Open carry. This puts more required training into the populace, and more guns in more hands. Crimes drops, less cops needed, less court time used, etc, etc, etc.

Something to consider about laws:

There is not a single law that prohibits a crime in which there is a victim that acts as a deterrent. Sure, pot smoking laws may deter some from smoking pot. But if I am going to kill someone, a law is the last thing that will stop me. Robbery...gonna happen regardless of the law prohibiting it.

In essence: the violent criminal will do whatever it is they were going to do anyway. Gun laws are only keeping guns away from lawful citizens.

Even in England. I bet that you can find some guns in the hands of criminals there, too. How does the populace protect themselves? Pitchforks?

Why do you spend money for the police ? Get rid of it !

As an American, I can't figure out how all the other countries don't allow their citizens the freedom to own a gun. I have a couple guns and I love it, I certainly as heck would never give it away. I shoot up aluminum cans and milk cartons after I've finished them, the target practice is relaxing, it helps me to zen-tastically meditate.

I ask that this thread be closed now. The issue of taking our guns is a moot point. Come and TAKE THEM. I dare ya to try.

This is what the Brits call a "Town & Country" issue. People in cities will never understand why people in rural America need weapons, and people in rural America will never understand why people in urban America are afraid of them. Yes, guns are weapons. So are knives swords etc. When I lived in London there were many random attacks by people with swords instead of guns, and in Chicago (with its strict gun control laws) I was mugged at gun point and knife point. The point is, criminals don't care about the law so taking guns away from law abiding citizens makes no logical sense. Especially when some people use their weapons to provide meat for their families (many more in the current recession).

To answer your statement though, we need the second Amendment to preserve the First Amendment. Additionally, the initial shots of the Revolutionary War were fired because the British were on their way to seize a rebel arms cache. The weapons stored there were equivalent in firepower to so-called assault weapons today; culturally guns are very important to our national identity. Additionally, a well armed citizenry is the last defense against tyranny. It's why the first thing totalitarian governments do is confiscate private weapons. I'm from rural America. Were there an intruder or violent criminal nearby it would take the police about 30 minutes to get to my house. With a weapon I have a fighting chance. Without one, I'm dead.

Plus, if you really care about this issue you should read John Locke's Second Treatise on Government and then reflect upon how you can best defend yourself.

I am a 100% believer in personal responsibility. Why should i relinquish my own responsibility to protect myself to someone who will only eventually use it to abuse me with tyranny?

Less government = more freedom. Abject freedom is what i desire.

Yea, handguns are made to conceal and criminals use them. I am just amazed why he is ever allowed to get off a second shot. Armed Americans would see that he didn't.

I can read about folks who do not conceal carry everyday in the newspapers. They're usually identified as victims, pending notification of next of kin.

I can read about folks who don't have any firearms nor the where-with-all to use them when their house is broken into and the residents are found in their own blood.

I'm real familiar with folks who don't like firearms.

Hear about them every single day.

59 pages of the same stupid people saying "we don't need guns" over and over, because the TV told them so. Because their public school teachers told them so, and fed them some bogus "statistics" to make it sound like guns spontaneously develop an evil personality and the ability to move on their own and kill everyone in sight. Only cops should have guns, right? I mean, they are the only responsible people we have. How many times do you hear about a cop doing something wrong? Never?

You are something like 12 times more likely to die by cop than by terrorist. With all the gate raping going on to prevent terrorists, what methods would best be used to prevent policing? You know, for the public safety and whatnot.

I never said the UK was perfect, I was just making stating that in the UK we have less gun problems than in America and we also have gun control.

Yeah guns aren't that much of a problem here in the UK, but the crime rate is very high and people still get murdered, raped and robbed, but just not at gun point. Same results though and if we were armed, we could fight back and the crime rate would be lower..

A guy drives around Cumbria shooting people followed by three unarmed cops who just keep their distance while he kills people. Any number of people could have stopped him if they had been armed, especially the cops.
