Well, to be honest, noone was functioning for about 6 months.
Everything in my life shut down.
I think I just needed to lie in bed and NOT function for awhile.

Then I go see this doctor, who tells me I am doing the wrong thing. Get back into life. Take these drugs, they will help you. They did not, therefore I am assuming that the diagnosis was completely off.
Human beings go through life. Unless you have a serious mental illness, that requires medication to function on an ongoing basis, medication should be the last resort.
However, in my case, it was the first thing she did. Bad medicine, IMHO.

Speak for yourself.
I recommend that you enroll in a 300 level Psychology class and learn some of the basic behaviors of Personality Disorders.
Here is an excerpt from www.psychiatryonline.com...
This is in part from The DSM-IV-TR and The American Journal of Psychiatry.
There are a total of 9 Criteria. Here is a sampling.
All Criteria must be present:
"(Criterion A1). These should be distinguished from delusions of reference, in which the beliefs are held with delusional conviction. These individuals may be superstitious or preoccupied with paranormal phenomena that are outside the norms of their subculture (Criterion A2). They may feel that they have special powers to sense events before they happen or to read others' thoughts. They may believe that they have magical control over others, which can be implemented directly (e.g., believing that their spouse's taking the dog out for a walk is the direct result of thinking an hour earlier it should be done) or indirectly through compliance with magical rituals (e.g., walking past a specific object three times to avoid a certain harmful outcome). Perceptual alterations may be present (e.g., sensing that another person is present or hearing a voice murmuring his or her name) (Criterion A3). Their speech may include unusual or idiosyncratic phrasing and construction. It is often loose, digressive, or vague, but without actual derailment or incoherence (Criterion A4). Responses can be either overly concrete or overly abstract, and words or concepts are sometimes applied in unusual ways (e.g., the person may state that he or she was not "talkable" at work)."
You can purchase a copy of the DSM-IV-TR at your local bookstore to finish reading the rest of the Criteria.

Yep. When I was in college taking my psych classes I thought for sure I was going schizophrenic (seasonal depression and anxiety attacks that lead me to think I was losing it) of course my being early twenties was just my final "proof" (schizophrenia generally occurs in the early twenties). You tend to take little things like that and all of your knowledge on the subject is so close at hand that it seems like a fact.

yours is a pretty good story. i've done some disability rights legal work and the idea that people with aspergers somehow need medicine to be happy or 'normal' is pretty disturbing. there are some manifestations of autism that i think could be helped with modern medicine. but the idea that everyone with a spectrum disorder (adhd especially) needs to be drugged is ridiculous. its literally chemical restraint of someone's personality.

It seems to me that most of humanity would be schitzotypical then. Besides, why is it that being a little odd always has to be a mental disorder?

Hahaha...
And nobody bothers to ask....who is the shrinks shrink???

My daughter has Aspergers...wonderful people...no one will diagnose her, but I have done enough reading to know she has it. Just because I haven't been to college will not be accepted as a form of debunking my beliefs...who knows...maybe I would be considered an abomination considering I have been talking since I was six months old and walking about the same time...used to blow a lot of minds. But that's moot.

The beauty of intelligence is in the eye of the beholder...it is either recognized or written off as crazy.
And if I and my kid are crazy...happy to be in acceptable company...couldn't deal with being sane.

There are likely people here that suffer from this and other disorders but generally it will be someone who thinks the surveillance and theories are directly aimed at them. Being paranoid or beleiving in alternative reality theories are not indicative of mental illness.

Don't worry guys, you aren't all crazy.

You surely cannot be validating this label in any way? You're not are you? God you are.

You can't take modern phenomena, behaviours and life and diagnose it all. Good grief - anyone who follows any religion fulfills the criteria to be diagnosed with schizophrenia! 90% of new psychiatrists in the UK come from abroad - that is despite the fact that many students begin their training expressly to enter that field. However, by the time they get half way through, they change specialism. One student when asked why he dropped psychiatry explained that psychiatry is a profession that spends an infinite amount of time talking about patients - right down to if the pattern on the curtains might be upsetting them - and no time at all actually speaking to the patient (on average 10 minutes per week - and that's when they're detained in hospital). So I'd say the 10% who stay the course are either stupid....or greedy.

The bio-medical model has prevailed - despite the fact it has NEVER been proved. A psychiatrist does NOT consider a patients history and they are literally trained NOT to listen to their patients - rather they 'observe' HOW it is being said i.e. pressured speech, salad speech etc. The 'social' model has been sidelined because apparently it is people intensive (psychologists and councillors) even though getting to the root of the life causes of unmanageable stress is the obvious way to help someone suffering from same....but then the social model doesn't require lifelong prescribed medications so there's simply no money in it.

It is a con of an industry that is in bed with the pharmaceutical companies. And please don't tell me about any of your training invalidating my comments - the pharmaceutical companies pay for that too - that would mean I would have to invalidate you.

Psychiatry often discusses the stigma attached to mental illness when in reality it is only people in the profession who stigmatise people who have breakdowns or depression, tell them they will never cope in life without their medications (these medications can be, and are, fatal - while the conditions they are prescribed for are NOT).

P.S. Sometimes the surveyllance is being aimed at them. What does psychiatry do then?

Yet another reason to control the internet - so much misinformation, disinformation and so darn many outright lies.

...I have an idea. Instead of shutting down Wikileaks, how 'bout the government close that so-called medical website.

Congrats on your term paper, but you might want to check the criteria in DSM for this PD.
The visual assessment is extremely pertinent in making this Dx due to odd mannerisms and odd appearance.
As I said earlier, it is a fairly uncommon disorder, but if they venture out in public, you can easily spot them.
It may very well be combined with other disorders also, such as schizoid PD, who are characterized by the same type of eccentricities and social isolation.

Of course psychiatry follows a biological model, it is an M.D. specialty, thus they treat medical disorders with a medical model. The social school of clinical psychology has fallen out of favor simply because the cognitive-behavioral model is more effective. As for why people drop out of the program, everyone I have talked to says it's because it they can't psychologically handle dealing with the patients. It's a very demanding profession and looking at the figures has one of the highest rates of burnout of any profession due to how much pain and suffering they face on a daily basis.

And therein lies the conspiracy. You see Big Pharma is now moving in on the hottest and fastest growing demography. The Seekers Of Truth (TSOT) for TSOT it is pertinent to be overly cautious, inquisitive and self reliant. If they come up with a cure for schiztopal, will it make us accept what is being relayed by our wise teachers of history and current events?

What does a person who accepts everything he is told suffer from? Or is that just mentioned character type a true example of what is to be sane?

I would continue but I do not wish to "convince" anyone of anything because a like a true psychopath I believe I am the only one who is sane and all of you are the ones who are crazy. But you know a little logic could cure someone such as myself. If only I could be convinced that a life of slavery instead of servitude were the answer, could I accept the lies I have been told and fully debunked.

LOL where is the pil btw I need it, escapism is kool here and there.

Interesting, what about people who have had close encounters? Or have worked in fields which the ms would consider fringe or alternative yet are just as real but needing to be kept private because the majority are not yet prepared to handle the truths? This is just weird, but you know they have to find newly shaped boxes for all of the extraordinary people surfacing in todays world.

Joking aside ,claiming anyone who thinks outside the box and dares to challenge TPTB are mentally ill would be a very convenient and effective way of discrediting anyone that threatens the status quo.

Therefore I would just like to state for the record that I ALWAYS believe everything my government tells me and I don't believe in UFO's, Bigfoot or Barbra Streisand.

So, I was browsing the web and got caught up into different disorders and medical conditions and alike when suddenly I came accross one condition that would categorize 80% of ATS'ers as suffering from that disease lol.

Ready? Here goes...

Schizotypal
-----------------
People with schizotypal personality disorder may be severely disturbed. Their odd behavior may resemble that of people with schizophrenia. For example, they may also have unusual preoccupations and fears, such as fears of being monitored by government agencies.

More commonly, however, people with schizotypal personality disorder behave oddly and have unusual beliefs (aliens, witchcraft, etc.). They cling to these beliefs so strongly that it isolates them from normal relationships.

BY THE WAY, I'm not trying to insult anyone so please don't get on my back for making a joke...

Sorry I think this applies:"Oppositional defiant disorder!""(I think I got it too
