I note that the shape of the object appears to change as the solar emissions move around it. That doesn't seem to support the explanation of a bad camera pixel (actually many pixels to make a spot this large.) If the object is at solar distance, rather than merely somewhere along the line of sight from the camera to the the edge of the Sun, this object would be huge; larger than Earth-sized. It could very well be much closer to the camera, and so, much smaller. The object is dark. In the context of these images, that merely means that it isn't emitting x-rays. I found no evidence of the object in current ultraviolet or visible light images of the Sun. It might simply be inconspicuous against a circumsolar background at these wavelengths. I don't believe this will prove to have any connection to NASA's announcement tomorrow, about a discovery made by the Chandra Space Observatory. Chandra is not intended to study the Sun. Ross

Not saying it's a glitch on anything.

It could be there, but only visible in the X-Ray spectrum.

Having said that...

I've been thinking about this...i thought the 'anomaly' looked familiar..that i'd seen it before, so i did some digging through recently watched video, and found a match.

It's a YT video, posted by a user called Froschilein84 about UFO and objects found on images and video taken of the sun...one of the objects looks to be more or less a match for what we're seeing in the OP's video.

Pay close attention at 1:59 - 2:06..

A newly discovered comet is diving toward the sun, most likely it will not survive the encounter.

Sorry I am having problems linking - could this be it?

It,s a skydiver. Haven't heard about the new sport them adrenalin junkies are doing? It's called solarbase jumping.

is that the new Kinect game? FYI Mod already warned about jokes without contributing to the thread...

@Thread: I doubt thats just a glitch, people tried to say the same thing also even blaming "compressing images" about SOHO. Even being old, SOHO received maintenance for another 10 years. If in fact these kind of artifacts, costing millions to create and maintain, show glitches every now and then for a period of time, then the glitches "vanish"... I should be the first one to say none of the data received from them is reliable, due to the fact they're faulty.. meaning they're just a waste of time and money.

In other words, they are not glitches

You took the words right out of my mouth.

That would make the comet larger than Earth?? I don't see how that is a logical explanation. The flares going off beside the "object" you call a comet would, I would imagine, break it up with intense heat before it even hit. Nonetheless, the object is way too big to be a comet.

ETA: The largest known asteroid is 900km in diameter. Earth is 12750km in diamater. Based on the size of the object in relation to the Sun, it must be larger than Earth and, therefore, not an asteroid.

So what is that... about 10 times the size of Jupiter?

Nah maybe just the same size as Jupiter

You could be right

Look at that 'comet' trajectory... it headed right for the Mothership

Lesse now...

1) Missile launched from LA on Nov 8th

2) We see this strange object near the sun

3) we have a SOHO confirmed contrail that looks just like the LA missile

4) its on the 14th of Nov

How long does it take a missile to get to the sun again?

The people on this forum amaze me. The spot is not really next to the sun, there is nothing that could sit next to the sun except maybe some nebular gas.

Also look, at :09 seconds. The entire image is flipped 360 degrees, yet the spot never moves. Its the camera dudes.

I guess 6 days.

I think a camera glitch/ problem has more to do with this incident though.
edit on 14-11-2010 by Portugoal because: I forgot to include a ":" therefore my BBCode was not complete. Don't you guys hate when that happens? Persoinally I think it's all a conspiracy --> make it difficult to complete code = random words that don't lead to images. Horrible.

Watch as the video rotates, the "object" does not move. This means it is an imaging artifact, or bit of space junk stuck on the camera. This is not an actual physical object. No question about it - just watch the clip. Good find, though - we need diligence like that to find the real mysteries
Thanks for posting!

on someones thoughts about missle fired towards sun. Well doesnt it take months and months to get to Mars, so wouldnt a missle take a little longer than that to reach the sun??? just saying.. I am by no means a math genius, nor a scientist with decades of experience under my belt.

My only question is, why isn't this visible @spaceweather? I peek in everyday for grins and giggles, haven't seen the sun doing backflips or collecting clingons on that site.. curious.

Idunno... but I was always under the impression space junk was actually physical

But what I want to know is... who services that probe? I have seen it down for maintenance
And why does the sun do a back flip? Must be the service tech bumping the camera to shake loose that space debris

I can already predict what's gonna happen. This thread will rise to the top of the flagged list, and get pages of replies, until somebody finally debunks it and we realize it was ridiculous to think anything otherwise in the first place. Don't get me wrong it's pretty interesting, but after what happened with that LA ufo webcam thread yesterday it just makes me /facepalm. I hope I'm wrong.

Was that missile truly debunked? Ive watched some video of it now and it looks much more like a missle launch than looking at the still shot i first got to see... "the government says its an airplane" "ok the government wouldnt lie"

My opinion that said object is actually a flaw in the imaging sensor or damage to the "lens".
Like someone posted earlier, when the sensor recalibrate halfway through video clip, the object stays in the exact same place.

As much as I believe that ufos are real in some cases, this is not one of them. No mothership.. *snicker*

If the camera recalibrated, or repositioned itself, the artifact would move along with it, would it not?

Before you all get your panties in a bunch about this being

1) a spaceship

2) missile that close to the sun (lol)

3) any other cooky idea...

Imagine this...

Imagine there is an object with a parallel orbit to the sun, much CLOSER to the xray than the sun. Appearing "bigger" and "close to" the sun?

There you go.. IMHO the MOST likely cause.

That is 100% a camera defect... notice how when the image 'spins', the dot doesn't move at all? If it was an object it would have been distorted as well .. but it didnt, it just stayed still.
