exactly.

for example, i often get false invoices from THE DOMAIN REGISTRY OF AMERICA saying that my domain is about to expire and all i need to do is sign the form and send a cheque. But your actually agreeing to transfer the domain and they dont actually own it. Its a sca, but lots of dim wited people will fall for it, and thats in the real world. Its a lot easier in cyberspace.

Peoaple ask me about how clever hackers are getting and i often retort that its quite the reverse, its how stupid people are getting.

personally i think 99% of mainstream hacks are govt sourced. Its not easy figuring out how these high end browsers and OS's work, it requires a certain level of expertise, expertise that can only really come from big bodies and commercial companies have little interest in throwing apanners into the works, but govts do.

It is a reality and has been ever since they were introduced. Anyone who works in software will tell you that accessing a webcam takes a SINGLE like of code : - cvCaptureFromCAM

That is an exageration. After the webcam is accessed you still have to grab frames, compress them and send them or save them. That takes code too.

Also, the argument of how easy it is to use a webcam is entirely different than the argument of how to create a trojan with the code required and deliver it, and nothing compared to the ridiculous amounts of manpower required for people to watch the cameras of an entire population.

Not saying it's not possible, but it is surely not as easy as you try to make it out to be.

They ALWAYS COULD listen in on even your old, plug in wall rotary phones. Even while its hung up...Big brother just "turns on the mic (mouthpiece)" to listen...and you never know. Apparently..a lot of you still dont.

Shut off your mics on computr, and turn your cams around or off.

PS It does NOT need to be turned on. A remote point power access can enable the line on to listen in ...even if its "off" on your end.

And I do use a laptop. Also, The most he would find out was my best scores in a few games I have. I don't have any personal data on here at all. :-)

It is possible to deactivate the light yes; it is as simple as ( variable=0 ) zero being off

Are you saying this: "In Theory"? Or do you have the actual code?

This is why you build your own computer !Only takes once to figure it out and all the info you need to do it will be clearly stated in the motherboard guide. This really isnt shocking news to me. Any top notch hacker can take total control of your system anytime they want ,and use it for as long as they like. With the increasing processing power of todays PC ,you could be shopping online ,playing 3 mmo's ,have 20 games of chess going on and still have no idea your computer is being used by someone else. The government could pull this off with there eyes closed!

Put that away; you'll go blind.

The problem with this theory is that the "command" is part of a developing SDK called OpenCV. OpenCV was written entirely for C, C++, and Python programming languages; none of which are WEB programming languages. They run on computers, but not are not executable by web services.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't this following the same idea on websites that are able to send commands to your computer to open the CD tray? I mean in theory, I believe this is possible. I have a degree in computer information system and I do know that you can write code that can easily access hardware. Now, rather or not it works in a web based enviroment for cameras, that I do not know. However, as mentioned before, there are prank websites that cause your CD tray to open, so why not a webcam?

This is probably the dumbest thread I've ever had to endure. What possible motivation would someone have to view millions of people on their webcam in secret while they're on their computer doing absolutely nothing. Alright so let's say its possible, and its happening and it's an invasion of privacy... and on an enormous scale... Unless you're desperately in search of wanting to see someone crank it in front of their webcam I highly doubt anyone cares to see your mug staring at a screen. But go ahead and put those stickers on those webcams people I don't know what kind of freaky stuff you do infront of your webcam but rest assured apparently someone might already know!

No, not without the user explicitly granting privileges for the site to control their webcam, that's what the OP got confused about.

There was some Flash exploit that allowed a site to trick the user into granting access, though this particular exploit was plugged pretty quickly. However the OP wasn't talking about hacks and exploits - just that if you visited his site he could turn on your webcam with a single line of code...as I say, he was a bit confused.

Yep, have to cover your webcam with tape, try to tape a piece of tinfoil to the tape, ALSO: if you have a digital television, or a digital screen the possibility exists that you will still be tracked: Example: new technology that allows the digital television to emit something to scan your surroundings. There's a thread on this somewhere.

Only thing is, A window will pop up letting you know this site is trying to access your webcam and microphone, By default it is setup to ask you when a website tries to gain access.

Whenever the webcam on a computer is on the light associated with it goes online as well. When a webcam even screencaptures the desktop the light flashes quickly.

You can pretty much tell when someone is watching your cam cause of this light. if you have a mac and theres no light then only way of telling is in terminal and seeing who is connected to you.

The Camera light need not engage, you will not get any of "someone trying to access" notice..the Gov hacking programs of the CIA, FBI. HS, etc can open any line. Do not be naive. To suspect they cant...is not giving our Government any credit...and you know how they are...and have been...and will continue.
Some of you here still believe "oh! The light will come on!' and "you'll get a warning!"...hardly.

You will never know, ever.

Oh definately. To realize just how insecure and fearful some people are, you have to wonder what other rediculous lengths they go to. The government promotes control and fear - yet some of the people who subscribe to that belief and raise questions are the same people who put themselves in a controlled and fearful environment. Paranoid of flu shot? Understandable. Paranoid of someone looking at you blankly stare at a screen...

S+F.

*Edit I just realized you were talking about "built in webcams" but I think the issue remains the same. Are we being spied on, and how deep does it go*

This is exactly why after the 2nd night of haveing my webcam (which not only shows a good portion of my room, happens to aim directly at my bed when I'm not on the computer) I made a makeshift "lense for it.

The first couple night I'd turn it around but it got annoying as it didn't sit right. So yea I made a cover.

I'm sure most all new devices 2009+ , cell phone, laptops, monitors, tv's, gameing consoles, cable boxes ect, are ALL bugged with nano camera tech and nano tech microphones.

But there's something about that black dot off the Webcam that really freaks me out. Sort of reminds me of "HAL" from Space Oddysey(sp?). Like it's gonna light up Red and start singing "Daisy" for me.

So yea, webcam definitely gets the lens cover when I'm not useing it.
