I went there again recently with some buddies, got a gun pulled on us by an undercover cop, I'll go back soon.

The place is so huge it's crazy, and the other crazy thing is that in the main building of the asylum, goes underground like 3 floors and all the operating equipment n such is all still there.

If any of you have seen the movie "House on Haunted Hill" then you've heard of that electro-shock therapy, they have a room like that in one of the buildings of the insane asylum, might still be operational, it's nuts!

i think it is man, when we went it smelled like blood, not a good scene. Its patroled by like 4 cops though, you have to get onto the otherside and hop over the fence.

Wow this is a great thread, after reading all the experiences.I am very impressed at how some of you are not afraid of the patrolling cops there!Wish I had that kind of courage to sneak over, jump a fence and get inside while avoiding security guards, cops ,homeless people and local criminals with guns!

There usually are alot of unhappy spirits in old asylums and mental hospitals.

My mom works at a mental hospital that has been around forever. One of the last mental instutions still up and standing. They used to give electro-shock therapy, and beat the clients, and do horrible horrible things. There is one building, that has chains on the walls.

My mom was working nights one time, and I went to go pick her up, because her car broke down. She went to building R, (the haunted building), to get her coat that she put in there earlier that day. The lights were dim and we heard rattling and clanging, and the chains on the wall were flinging around, like an invisible person was in them. We heard a scream that sounded far away and yells (could have been real, theres other buildings around), and when we were leaving, I turned around and looked at it, and the lights were flicking on and off. Scariest thing thats happened to me. I think its definetly haunted.

Wow that sounds pretty freaky, i'd hate to be caught in that sort of situation! What did your mum say when all the noises started happening?

btw my all time scariest film is House on haunted hill, scared the cr*p out of me lol I watched it when I was like 11.

Hi Guys

If you are interest in abandon asylums, there is a Huge Haunted Abandon Asylum in New Norfolk, Tasmania, Australia. Royal Derwent/Willow Court was the biggest Mental Institution in the Southern Hemisphere. It has been abandon for a few years but it has had its fair share of Haunts and even calls for exorcism.

Check out my Website for more information: royal-derwent.livejournal.com...

There is electricity on in there. If you drive down Descano St. you pass the High Voltage Electric box still humming...which would make sence since one of the buildings is occupied by LAPD's public safety. It's there Headquarters. The stationed cop today let us drive about during the day and get pics, and well, the majority of this posted story is BS. Take a look during the day and you can see the abandoned trolly cars they used to get around. We got pictures of the old kennels today...guessing police type dogs. Got pictures of the abandoned house across the street. Pretty architecture. Not saying it's not haunted, it's just a shame that people feel the need to make stories up. Question: if it's Downey...LA county...why is the LAPD patroling instead of LA Sheriffs.

In concurrence, most of the stories surrounding the property were total b.s. I drove there last night and had a go about the outside of it. (Guess what - no cops whatsoever).

There was a post that said that if the neighbors hear you, they'll call the cops, which is probably what happens (i.e. traveling in packs of 5-10 people makes lots of noise and is pretty conspicuous by any standard). By the way, the "neighbors" are temporary residents of a place located directly across the street called H.O.M.E. (which is a safe house for relatives or significant others who are in the RANCHO LOS AMIGOS REHABILITATION CENTER). The reason the place was so "mysteriously" abandoned is because they built a MASSIVE complex across the Imperial Highway (street) to replace the business.

Although it wasn't always Rancho Los Amigos Rehab, it used to be Rancho Rehab. They did various things, the polio bit is true, that was one of their primary missions back in the day. Don't quote me on it, but I believe they "abandoned" it around 1992. They merged with Los Amigos sometime around there (thus the necessity for a larger compound). You can dig up further history/information about Rancho Los Amigos on rancho.org.

The probable reason for the still going electricity is more than likely because studios occasionally use the property (i.e. Bubba Ho-Tep, which I dig that movie).

Although the place is highly creepy at night, I remain skeptical of any haunting activity. However, I'll let you know when my team goes.

Okay.. I had an enormous post written up about this place but forget to enter the damn code thing and lost it all.. So the following will be a shorter account of what I was planning on saying.

I visited here last night with my film partner to shoot a project. We got there around 2 AM and stayed until about 3:30. First off, let me say - this place is VERY creepy. Seriously, I've never been so scared in my life.

Unfortunately we were a bit too chicken to go into many buildings, but we did walk (and also drive) down the road that goes through the middle of the place, and also went into a warehouse-type building that can be seen from the street outside of the hospital. The warehouse place was really creepy because one of its double doors was cracked open, with an "Open" sign still on the door. There was a lot of big equipment and tires and things in here, and a lot of creepy piping and stuff, but not much other than that.

As far as getting into the place, we did not see one copy the whole entire time we were filming. I was a bit worried about that because I had heard that the place was heavily patrolled, but nope - maybe Sunday nights are good nights to visit? It was also weird because two of the gates were open; the main gate was dragged obviously wide open, so it really wasn't hard to get into at all.

Thinking back on it, I would have liked to visit some of the actual hospital rooms and such, but it was just very very creepy. I also would recommend going with MORE than 2 people. My partner and I were freaked out even with each other there. You just feel very.. vulnerable; the place is so huge.

But yeah. It was an exciting experience. If you guys want more info, just ask. But definitely take precautions before going in (parking a few blocks away, keeping your voices down, not shining flash lights through windows, etc.)

Sorry for the bump, but I found this thread after googling "asylum in downey."

Me, my brother, and 2 of our friends were there last night. I have to debunk a few things that were said earlier in this thread.
Electricity is on. And a lot of it. Some of those buildings are still being used. And its pretty random too, we were walking along a path of boarded up buildings and just one building that wasn't boarded up, with all the lights on inside. People were working in there, lol.

Cops will arrest you if you lie to them. About an hour after walking around, this cop found us, asked us what we were doing. We told him the truth, we said "Honestly, we heard about this place online and wanted to check it out ourselves. But we're not touching anything, we're not going in anywhere, we're merely walking and admiring." So he said we can continue to walk around but we'd be subject to arrest if we try to enter anything.
Luckily he didn't see us earlier :cX

I'm not saying this place isn't haunted, clearly there are lost and hurt souls in there. But I'm not going to sit here and make up ghost stories to try and scare anyone. We did experience some things that I prefer not to talk about. Mainly because I don't know why people would want to share these experiences. I think they're personal. I think if a spirit does reach out to you than its for a reason, and I don't think that reason is to run and post it on the internet.

I thought it was pretty awesome. I'm completely dumbfounded to why the hell there was a brand new beautiful retirement community barely 30 feet away from one of the bigger boarded up buildings though. Talk about an eyesore! lol
