According to Roger Leir there is a chunk of metal that has properties that can only be explained if it was manufactured with materials not naturally occurring on earth. That should do it shouldn't it?

That you don't believe him or don't pursue the opportunity to study the evidence he claims to have is a matter of personal choice.

There are a lot of things for which we have only circumstantial evidence but we pursue investigation of, black holes anyone? Crimes? Love affairs?

So lack of conclusive evidence does not demand that one abandon a subject, nor does it represent evidence of absence.

Also, possession of conclusive evidence does not end the investigation either. Evidence can only suggest a path of investigation.

Suppose we study and universally accept Roger Leir's chunk of metal... then what? we can study the material itself and maybe learn a bit of metallurgy or something... but that does not answer a lot of questions about who made it. So it is still a dead end street. It's not like the US president is going to print "you were right" certificates and give them to every believer. Nothing changes really.

We had the recent press event with air force officials in charge of launching nukes. and what happened? nothing. For something to happen there has to be evidence of meaningful influence, a threat, a promise of technology, the possibility that we are about to have a firehose of information about a new culture. but without that all we have is very little *actionable* evidence (evidence you can do something with). So in a way the skeptics are right to not do much with it.

So the answer to this could very well be, "yes we are being visited, but very rarely and for reasons we will never know. anyway, pass the ketchup"

Such confidence! How comforting to know that we have the benefit of the wisdom from someone who has it all worked out! I have no doubt that had you lived in the time of ancient peoples who were certain that the stars were pinholes in the fabric that separated our mortal world from the Divine Kingdom of The Gods you would have been equally confident in that contemporary wisdom. The wisest men of their day also once were certain that the world was flat. Would you have been so bold and insightful at that time to declare the radical concept that the world was in fact A SPHERE in opposition of accepted understanding? I can't help but think not. Do you truly think that in a couple hundred years the Human race has achieved a complete and error-free understanding of the universe which will never be giggled at by some future scientists? To believe so is nothing less than arrogance of the sort that stifles the advance of knowledge and scientific understanding.

Obviously the differences in the perceptions of the universe and reality have changed greatly over the course of recorded Human history. To believe that those great changes are now over is nothing but folly in my eyes.
