Hello,

Perhaps it will strike some of you as naive, but this is ATS so I thought I'd ask the question: do you believe in literal magic, i.e. Harry Potter-kind of spells? If you happen to accept the existence of such phenomena, was there anything in your life which convinced you or is this your general stance?

Happy Halloween!

No, not at all. Though it would be cool to be like Harry Potter. I can do all I want in that universe and become a king man.

I don't believe in any sort of "magic".

The event in my life which convinced me of this is the fact that people will attribute random events they don't understand to whatever fits their views.

I don't believe in supernatural magic. I believe in energy manipulation and I believe that with total belief you can achieve it with concentration. In fact I know it. But so as to not get flamed on this site I'll refrain from explaining how I know it. Send me a private message and I'd be happy to elaborate.

I believe magick in some form is real but I do not believe it works like the Harry Potter movies.

As long as belief in magick has existed, there has to be something to it or everyone would have abandoned the concept long ago.

I also do not believe in literal magic.. just undiscovered science..

I do believe that the quantum computers we call brains can manipulate "real-world" materials and energies. I don't really have any proof of this outside of anecdotal evidence and personal experiences, but it is good enough for me since I have no interest in trying to make others belive anything.

I believe in magic.

But all magic has a scientific explanation.

Find that scientific explanation and suddenly the magic goes away.

Electricity used to be magic.

A camera taking and capturing someones image used to be magic.

The list is/was long, now it has gotten shorter because all magic has a scientific reasoning behind it, once discovered, then there is no more magic.

What can be magic to one person, can be pure science to someone else.

Well said. In fact, if one achieves the ability to manipulate energy using one of the best computers known to man, i.e. the human brain, it is best to keep it to yourself. It hasn't worked out so well in the past for those that have come and shown us it was possible. Witch hunts in salem, even though this is historically accepted as having been a personal bias of one person, People persecuted in the middle ages for practicing what they thought was "magic", etc.

I would give personal experiences on this board but since I can't provide you with proof unless you knew me and came to see me, I'll refrain. I will tell you a story though. I believe it to be true since the person that told me this is related to me and I consider their word beyond reproach.

He was a man that served in the military in the 1960's and had one of the highest security clearances you could have back then. It was shown by scientists, that when the introduced certain chemicals into the bloodstream of research mice for a period of time and starved them, that collectively the mice could move pieces of cheese to their cage using only group concentration. When I asked how they could achieve this I was told that since mice only know fear and hunger, that this aided them in using more of the ability (or power) of their brain than we can. This is what got me interested in the paranormal to begin with when I was a teenager. Later in life after a lot of study and practice I realized that what a lot of the ancients considered magic was actually energy manipulation since we are all energy and matter and thus connected. Since the quantum particles of atoms seem to communicate with each other with nothing sent between, like photons, it seems reasonable.

Now, "Flame On!" lol.

Why hello my new friend. Nice to see you posting. I share the same belief about magic that you stated. Energy is convertible, harnessable, and can be utilized. There's bio-electrical energy being processed through the neurons in our brains. With training, intention, focus, and practice I believe this energy can be utilized to certain degrees of "magic." I don't know much about magic, spells, or incantations... but I know about the power of thought.

I agree. In an infinite multiverse, what humans would define as magic will certainly exist. Just consider a replicator for instance....

Magic is real (and very literal), it's just misunderstood.

You'll probably see a few fireballs or lightning bolts sometime in the near future.

I do not believe I can conjure up a tasty meal or telaport to hogwarts, but I do believe in mind over matter. I do believe things like prayer, rituals and other rites can have a major impact on someones life.

I have first hand knowledge of Native American shamanism. I have seen many demonstrations that absolutely defy explanations by strictly scientific means.

Also as an undergrad in Anthropology, I participated in voodoo ceremony that turned very ugly and convinced me that what we perceive with our 5 senses is but a small part of the cosmos.

And the control we think we have is just an illusion.

Messing about in the paranormal can be very dangerous.

Happy Halloween!

Of course magic is "real."

In an infinite verse, magic is just another power-set.

I agree that messing the paranormal can be dangerous. I have also seen many unexplainable, but have have never seen any one conjure me up a bleu cheese steak. Which, is what I would really love right now
it would also help me out at home, sometimes I really get tired of cooking. I also grew up in the bayous of Lousiana and have heard and seen many strange voodoo happenings.

If I knew where you lived I could conjure you up a bleu cheese steak with a simple call to Applebys or OliveGarden;

And a couple of Coronas as well.

Your a bit behind the times there.

If you want to distinguish actual Magic from making a rabbit appear from a hat type magic then you have to spell it in the most ridiculous way possible, just to make it clear you are talking about the cool "real" magic and not the other kind.

Acceptable spellings for "Real" magic are
Magyc
Majik
and possibly
Madgiyke

Magic is the expression and manipulation of energy called by a fancy word, pretty much all that you see today, would of been magic to people thousands of years ago, even communicating by a medium such as a computer and the internet, but today it's not magic, because it's normal and science explains how it's done to certain degrees. Even magicians and there tricks, are just manipulation of something to give the appearance of seeing something else, just another form of manipulating energy in it's many form's be it physical or in the perspectives of the mind, basically smoke and mirror's to create illusions to give people a show.
